The present release is a collection of chamber works for viola by Gordon Jacob, composed between 1946 and 1975. Violist Jadwiga Stanek writes: “From the very beginning of my artistic activity, I have been particularly fond of promoting the viola and have been performing chamber music in various instrumental ensembles. Gordon Jacob’s output shows my passion for performing various genres of that music in a special way. I appreciate the selected compositions of Jacob for the universal character of the viola part, since its different faces, elements of virtuosity, and warm timbre have an impact on the versatile artistic value of the interpreted pieces.”

It is a crystalline piano that opens this album before being joined by the rhythmic pair and then becoming heavily percussive before returning to more softness for a sinuous solo that alternates pearled notes and bushy chords.
The tone is set: Jad Salameh‘s compositions are sometimes dark and sometimes bright and his piano alternates passages where the left hand rumbles behind a repetitive right hand and those where it is the song that dominates.
The bass and the drums follow these changes of atmosphere and are in total symbiosis with the piano, forming at times with him a welded group whose sound is that of a compact block or simply accompanying him discreetly in his improvised escapades. We have here a dense music which does not fear the extremes in term of energy, and we are as carried away by its rhythmic and melodic evolutions.
Lebanese pianist living in France, Salameh, has his own voice and this first trio record expresses well the feelings and emotions that run through him, painting a contrasted and endearing sound landscape.
One cannot remain indifferent to such a sincere approach.

Jade Warrior – Jade Warrior (2022 Remastered Edition) (1971/2022)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 48:17 minutes | 477 MB | Genre: Rock
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Esoteric
Jade Warrior’s first album following Tony Duhig and Jon Field’s emergence out of the psychedelic July captures them abandoning the best of that band’s whimsical moodiness in favor of a symphonic spirituality epitomized from the outset by the soaring guitars that ecstatically slice through the opening “Traveller.” Reminiscent, in places, of a less-precious successor to Quintessence and the Incredible String Band in that moods and esotericism do sometimes get the better of the band’s more conventional music impulses, Jade Warrior is nevertheless a remarkable album, all the more so since its makers could readily have given the likes of Jethro Tull and the Moody Blues some serious competition in the mellifluous prog stakes. Glyn Havard’s vocals themselves can sound extraordinarily Ian Anderson-ish in places, with Field’s wielding of the flute and some distinctly edgy tempos only furthering that impression. Elsewhere, however, the same tools combine to induce emotions that range from trance to terror, an accomplishment that means highlights of the album are difficult to single out. Although the ten tracks are clearly delineated, the song titles are little more than passing impressions of the music’s own sensations, rendering Jade Warrior one of those rare albums that is best experienced as a seamless whole.

Let me invite you to listen to this potpourri of favorite musical stories spotlighting some of the rich contributions from American immigrants and other countries. Laden with cultural pride, they celebrate people like my Scottish friend Stuart, who capped a fulfilling international career with retirement to Cape Cod but never forgot his roots–and would sing the old song I Belong to Glasgow, at the drop of a hat. I Lift My Lamp pays musical homage to his Glaswegian pride—and the pride of so many other immigrants for their homelands. In a conversation between old and new, it honors living, community traditions not set in stone. Influenced by my work with storyteller Ken Burns, I feature vintage immigrant songs and dances from my Pittsburgh childhood, later life in Boston and travels–my own arrangements of American standards, lesser-known gems, and imported and homegrown creations, from countryside to Tin Pan Alley…

Jacqueline du Pré – Strauss: Don Quixote, Op. 35 – Lalo: Cello Concerto – Saint-Saëns: Cello Concerto No. 1, Op. 33 (2022)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/192 kHz | Time – 01:30:26 minutes | 3,26 GB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Warner Classics
Here is a batch of absolute masterpieces of the romantic concertante cello repertoire, played with her endless energy and sensitivity. This album gathers recordings that remained long unavailable even after du Pré’s death. Don Quixote was initially meant to be recorded with Otto Klemperer as a prelude to a concert at the Royal Albert Hall, but as they didn’t get on at all the project remained unrealized. Thankfully a rehearsal session directed by Sir Adrian Boult was preserved! A few seconds of recording were missing at the very beginning but have been patched with the Klemperer version. They are coupled with concertos by Lalo (which du Pré played for her first appearance on TV in 1958) and Saint-Saëns with Daniel Barenboim. The latter is a digital premiere.

The first orchestral recording of Jacqueline du Pré (from 1965) was also the premiere on record of Frederick Delius’ ethereal cello concerto. A memorable performance still regarded as the summit of the discography. It is coupled with the tone poem A Song Before Sunrise (a true orchestral splendor), and Songs of Farewell, a cycle of compositions for double chorus after Walt Whitman’s famous Leaves of Grass.
