Style Council’s first proper album Cafe Bleu was one of their better efforts, but it indicated the group’s fatal flaw — a tendency to be too eclectic and overambitious. Amidst the lazy jazz instrumentals, many of them courtesy of Mick Talbot, Paul Weller inserted several solid soul-tinged pop songs, including “My Ever Changing Moods,” “Headstart for Happiness,” “You’re the Best Thing,” and “Here’s One That Got Away.” However, that doesn’t excuse the rap experiment, “A Gospel.” The album was later released with a slightly different running order as My Ever Changing Moods in the U.S.; the American edition included the U.K. hit “A Solid Bond in Your Heart”.

The remarkable clarity and realism of this special Super Audio CD release virtually puts the listener right in the recording studio with Getz and his quartet.

Members of the viol family, with their 6 (or 7) strings and fretted necks were the string instruments of choice during the Renaissance and early Baroque, slowly being replaced by the 5-string and fret-less violin family. The bass viol, the ‘viola da gamba’ (so named as it was held between the knees), was a particular favourite of royal and aristocratic domestic music making over a long period.

biography by Bruce Eder
Founded in 1957 by John McNally (guitar/vocals), the Searchers were originally one of thousands of skiffle groups formed in the wake of Lonnie Donegan’s success with “Rock Island Line.” the Searchers’ immediate competitors included bands such as the Wreckers and the Confederates, both led by Michael Pender (guitar, vocals), and the Martinis, led by Tony Jackson (guitar/vocals). By 1959, McNally and Pender were working together as a duet; later in the year, Jackson joined as the lead vocalist. After drummer Norman McGarry left the Searchers he was replaced by Chris Crummy, who quickly renamed himself Chris Curtis. Other changes were in the works as Jackson built and learned to play a customized bass guitar. Learning his new job on the four-stringed instrument proved too difficult to permit him to continue singing lead, and McNally and Pender brought in a fifth member, Johnny Sandon (born Billy Beck). Johnny Sandon & the Searchers lasted from 1960 through February of 1962, and were extremely popular on the dance hall and club circuit in Liverpool. Sandon cut out for a career on his own, with another band called the Remo Four in early 1962.

Show creator David Chase, director Martin Bruestle, and executive producer Brad Grey are credited with this rich, cross-genre, multigenerational collection, but they tellingly thank a few score others. The contributions from usual suspect vets like Frank Sinatra, Dylan, Elvis Costello, Otis Redding, Van Morrison, the Kinks, Keith Richards (and the Stones), the Pretenders, and Ben E. King contain more than their fair share of musical and contextual surprises. But the collection’s true appeal lies in its artistically oblique corners, which somehow embrace alt-rock (R&B tinged and straight up, courtesy of Pigeonhed and Cake, respectively), nouveau Aussie country (Kasey Chambers), traditional gospel and swampy blues (the Campbell Brothers with Katie Jackson, R.L. Burnside), Vivaldi (Cecilia Di Bartoli), and contemporary Neopolitan pop (Madreblu, Lorenzo Jovanotti). Even budding star Uncle Junior chimes in, with Dominic “Goldenthroat” Chianese lending a spare, heartfelt rendition of the traditional “Core’ngrato”; hang onto your kneecaps, ‘N Sync!

Red Garland & Miles Davis had a symbiotic relationship. Red was such an important cog in the Davis quintet as a soloist, interactive accompanist, & keeper of the repertory. Being in Miles’ group gave Garland the exposure he otherwise would not have gotten. Once Garland’s talent as a pianist, with a boundless repository of material in his head, was established, Prestige’s Bob Weinstock signed him to a contract as a recording leader in his own right. With his Davis section-mate, Paul Chambers, on bass, & New York drummer Arthur Taylor, Garland formed a trio that met quite often in Rudy Van Gelder’s studio. Groovy was the 3rd in Red’s trio series for Prestige & it has the usual fine mix of jazz standards, ballad standards, blues ballads, & just plain blues. It is an object lesson in finding & maintaining a groove.

All Mornin’ Long is a jazz album by pianist Red Garland and his quintet. It was originally issued in 1958 on the Prestige label and catalogued as PRLP 7130. It features only three pieces, which belong to the hard bop subgenre and distinguish themselves by being fast-paced and bluesy. Critic Ira Gitler found the album satisfactory and said that the eponymous first piece was a “many-splendored, deep-dish demonstration of feeling, mood and melody”.

Following the trios led by Stefano Bollani and Giovanni Guidi, The Roma Trio is another splended piano trio from Italy that debuted on Venus Records. Following their Venus debut “Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing” and sophomore release “Ciao Ciao Bambina” comes a surprising third album which is entirely dedicated to the “jazzification” of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons concerti, each of which represented a season of the year.

Recorded on the supporting tour for 1976’s Black and Blue, the double-album set Love You Live is an adequate live album, capturing the Stones’ transition from a lean, lethal rock & roll band to accomplished showmen. As showmen, they aren’t as compelling as they are when they’re rockers, but the show-biz glitz of Mick Jagger’s arena rock shtick remains thoroughly entertaining, even when it robs the music of its power.
