Handel and Scarlatti together? Long ago, in Rome (for a musical joust before the most eminent cardinals), in Venice (at a masked ball where Scarlatti recognised the faceless harpsichordist: “It could be no one but the famous Saxon, or the devil”), in London (where an opera by Scarlatti was staged).
Together again under the pen of Charles Burney, who celebrated them as the two supreme masters of the harpsichord, the ‘heavenly twins’.
And together once more in the little church in Haarlem to which Pierre Hantaï returns like a pilgrim.

Giovanni Antonio Piani was a son of the Bolognese musician Pietro Giacomo Piani, who played the trumpet in the Neapolitan court. He was born in 1678 in Naples, where he studied the violin at the Conservatory under the guidance of Giovan Carlo Cailò and Nicola Vinciprova. He became a skillful violinist and had a brilliant career, which led him first to Paris, then, from 1721 to at least 1757, to the imperial court of Vienna, where he was the best-paid performer with orchestra conducting functions from 1741 onwards. The only musical work by Piani that is known to us and was published in Paris in 1712 is the collection entitled in Italian “Sonate / a Violino solo e Violoncello col Cimbalo […] Opera Prima”. Poised between the Italian and French styles, the Piani sonatas are accompanied by various graphic marks on the score that the composer is using for suggesting dynamic expressions or articulations as explained within the “Avvertimenti” (Warnings) addressed to the performer, and to which the Ensemble Labirinto Armonico, led by Pierluigi Mencattini, pays the correct attention for obtaining an interpretation that fully respects the intentions of the author.

Phraim – Tides (2020)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 57:49 minutes | 1,17 GB | Genre: Jazz
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © 2020 Phraim
Phraim was founded in 2016 by the singer Nina Reiter, the pianist Stephan Plecher, bassist Marc Mezgolits and drummer Peter Primus Frosch. “Tides”, in German” tides “or” Ebbe und Flut”, is the title of the Band’s second album, which is committed to a modern jazz sound. The quartet works on its music as a collective, which is made possible by years of cooperation and mutual trust. “Tides” is not a typical Album: it was created as part of a live concert in the Studio, which was attended by an invited audience. The program was played through once-without interruptions, without cuts. Whether the final result makes a difference, the listener has to decide for himself, but there is no denying that the energy of the audience present is palpable.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/88,2 kHz | Time – 44:23 minutes | 863 MB | Genre: World, Folk
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © No Format!
With his seventh studio album, Shapes of the Fall, Piers Faccini, pursues his passion for pursuing the kind of cross-cultural dialogues that have long been heard on Mediterranean shores throughout the centuries, bridging southern Europe with the Near East and Africa. Although the songs are written and sung in English, the musical influences in Shapes of the Fall draw heavily on Faccini’s own Mediterranean ancestry, creating a musical voyage whose geography varies from song to song, crossing multiple frontiers with his voice over the course of the journey, from the snow tipped anglo-american Folk registers of songs like Paradise Fell or Together Forever Everywhere to the eerie desert blown notes of Middle Eastern or north African modes in tracks like Firefly or Dunya.

Boston Symphony Orchestra, Charles Munch – Piston: Symphony No. 6 / Martinu: Fantasies Symphoniques (1957/2016)

A genial conductor with a particular gift for French music, Charles Münch extended the Boston Symphony’s glory years (begun under the baton of Serge Koussevitzky) into the early ’60s. Münch was born in the province of Alsace-Lorraine, which at the time (1891) was controlled by Germany and has long hovered between two cultural worlds. Münch himself benefited from both French and German musical training, and his first important musical posts were in Germany. Yet he came to be regarded as the quintessential French conductor, and his recordings of French repertory with the Boston Symphony remain standards by which others are judged. Münch studied violin at the Strasbourg Conservatory, where his father was a professor, and, from 1912, in Paris with Lucien Capet. As an Alsatian, he was conscripted into the German army at the outbreak of World War I. Gassed and wounded as an artillery sergeant, he nevertheless survived the war through sheer resiliency. In 1919, upon returning to Alsace-Lorraine (now back in French hands), he took French citizenship, and a violin professorship in Strasbourg. Nevertheless, his professional interests soon sent him to Germany; he studied violin with Carl Flesch in Berlin, then moved to Leipzig to take a violin professorship at the conservatory there, and then became concertmaster of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra from 1926 to 1933, during Furtwängler’s tenure.
