Music in Time of War, the new double-album from pianist Kirill Gerstein, places the music of Komitas, pioneer of ethnomusi- cology and founder of the Armenian national school of music, alongside that of Claude Debussy, a seminal composer in the late 19th and early 20th centuries who held a deep admiration of Komitas’s music. Both composers were profoundly affected by the implosion of their worlds – Komitas by the Armenian Genocide, Debussy by the First World War – and their music reflects a close emotional alignment. Music in Time of War grew from Gerstein’s fascination with music’s power to reflect a narrative. The project will be released as a double CD album and will be accompanied by a hardcover book containing a series of illustrations and detailed essays in three languages commissioned by the pianist.

An acclaimed conductor and pianist as well as a composer, Thomas Adès has outgrown his status as the wunderkind of the British scene and become one of the most imposing figures in contemporary music. For his LSO Live debut, he conducts all of his seminal “Trilogy” works – Asyla, Tevot and Polaris – pieces that not only occupy a special place in his output, but in modern classical music as a whole. Recorded in 2016 during his first LSO “composer Focus”, this is the first time all three works have been presented together on one album, offering a unique chance to hear th emusical development of one of the world’s foremost composers. Composed in 1997 and winner of the 1999 Grawemeyer award, Asyla is the earliest of the pieces, and one of the works that announced Adès as a major new voice. Sir Simon Rattle, a long-time champion of the composer, conducted the work’s premiere with the CBSO as well as programming it in his inaugural concert as Artistic Director of the Berlin Philharmonic. The title is the plural form of the word asylum, and plays on teh dual meaning of both madhouse and sanctuary. Typical of his orchestral works, it utilizes a large orchestra to achieve an array of colors, textures and timbres. It also showcases Adès’s wide-ranging influences, with a “four-on-the-floor” techno drumbeat as the impetus behind the famous Ecstasia movement. Tevot is a one movement symphony that builds upon the ideas of Asyla and pushes the players to the limits of their technical ability, with long passages written in stratospheric registers. Again, there is a dual meaning at play in the title, as Trevot is the Hebrew word for bars as well as closely related to the word used in the Bible when referring to Noah’s ark. Adès himself explains: “I liked the idea that the bars of the music were carrying the notes as a sort of family through th epiece. And they do, because without bars, you’d have musical chaos. But I was thinking about the ark, the vessel, in the piece as the earth. The earth would be a spaceship, a ship that carries us – and several other species! – through the chaos of space in safety. It sounds a bit colossal, but it’s the idea of the ship of the world.” The final Trilogy work, Polaris, was composed in 2010 and is subtitled “A Voyage for Orchestra”. Taking the North Star as its inspiration, despite a relatively short running time it conjures up a definite sense of vastness, with musicians placed offstage to enhance the sense of space. The piece is built up from a simple, looping pattern of notes in the piano, that evolves to suggest a massive spiral with musical magnetic fields expanding, exploding and beautifully rearranging themselves.

Kirill Gerstein’s decade long relationship with British composer and pianist Thomas Adès is reflected through this latest release from myrios classics. Recorded in the luxurious acoustics of the Symphony Hall in Boston, the three Mazurkas for solo piano feature alongside the world premiere recordings of Berceuse from The Exterminating Angel and the concert paraphrase on Powder Her Face for two pianos performed with the composer. Together with these works is In Seven Days for piano and orchestra which anticipated Adès’s recent piano concerto written, like Berceuse, especially for Kirill. The live performance was captured in the Seiji Ozawa Hall as part of the 2018 Tanglewood Music Festival, with Adès conducting the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra.

Just like Pears and Britten, Ian Bostridge worked with the composer Thomas Adès on this recording of Schubert’s Winterreise, made at a concert at London’s famous Wigmore Hall in 2018. With his unique voice and style, the British singer divides opinion. Love him or hate him, he evokes strong feelings. As we fall into the former camp, we couldn’t recommend this recording strongly enough. It is very different from the studio version recorded some years before for EMI, with the great Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes. Compared to that splendid record, this new version is simpler, almost calmer. Thomas Adès makes use of original manuscripts to build a fine accompaniment, that gives voice to the overwhelming melancholy of the young composer who knows himself to be doomed. Fatal wanderings, seen through a lens of solitude, regret and resignation. The first volume of a trilogy which will eventually bring together Schubert’s great cycles, in live recordings by these same musicians. – François Hudry

In March this year, Thomas Adès, one of the most acclaimed and most frequently performed contemporary composers of our time, conducted the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Kirill Gerstein performing the world premiere of his Concerto for Piano and Orchestra. Comissioned by the BSO for Kirill Gerstein the work already is becoming part of the concert repertoire worldwide.
This live recording of what turned out to be a ravishing celebration of contemporary music, receiving rapturous response from audience and critics alike, is paired on the album with Adès’s 2013 work Totentanz.
Totentanz brings together baritone (Mark Stone) and mezzo-soprano (Christianne Stotijn) soloists with a (very) large orchestra, unfolding a dialogue between a charismatic and gleefully macabre Grim Reaper and the procession of his many victims, from Pope to Maiden and Child.

Tevot is a one movement symphony that builds upon the ideas of Asyla and pushes the players to the limits of their technical ability, with long passages written in stratospheric registers. Again, there is a dual meaning at play in the title, as Tevot is the Hebrew word for bars as well as closely related to the word used in the Bible when referring to Noah’s ark.
The final Trilogy work, Polaris, was composed in 2010 and is subtitled ‘A Voyage for Orchestra’. Taking the North Star as its inspiration, despite a relatively short running time it conjures up a definite sense of vastness, with musicians placed offstage to enhance the sense of space. The album also includes the Adès miniature Brahms, with words by Alfred Brendel. Sung here by baritone Samuel Dale Johnson, it is an ‘anti-homage’ to the composer inspired by the cold logic of his music, taking his compositional compulsions to extreme conclusions.
