Four symphonies were enough for Robert Schumann to leave his mark. Without allowing himself to be overawed by Beethoven’s shadow, he succeeded from the outset in coining a highly personal idiom, with an astonishing combination of formal rigour and freedom of inspiration. Pablo Heras-Casado and the Münchner Philharmoniker offer their interpretation of this corpus, more mysterious than it appears, which tells of its composer’s passionate and tormented soul.

When this recording was released in 2021, conductor Zubin Mehta was 85; it was made over three days in 2019. There isn’t an absolutely compelling novelty contained here, and this is very much an old-school Haydn performance with a full symphony orchestra and chorus (not that you’d want anything less in this work, whose rock-concert atmosphere at the initial performance is well described in the booklet). For those in search of the combination of Mehta and Haydn’s Die Schöpfung, Mehta’s performance some years ago with the Israel Philharmonic, with the sublime Barbara Hendricks as the soprano soloist, has a bit more of an edge. However, there is something satisfying about a maestro who continues to issue masterly performances at an advanced age. Part of the appeal is that all the musicians here made it their business to be at their best, not only the Münchner Philharmoniker, but the soloists, soprano Mojca Erdmann, tenor Dmitry Korchak, and bass René Pape, and the Philharmonischer Chor München. Everything comes off smoothly and nobly and certainly shows that Mehta is not done yet. The orchestra’s engineers deliver superior sound from the Philharmonie im Gasteig; the recording’s clarity enhances the enduring Enlightenment mood.

During his years in Vienna, Mozart wrote a series of keyboard concertos in which the soloist faces off for the first time against an orchestral part of symphonic aspirations. The famous D minor Concerto reveals this to particularly impressive effect, its dark passion and drama setting it apart from the rest of the series. The inexhaustible strength of a genius: Neither the disillusionment that set in after his exile to the United States nor his declining health stopped Bartók from fulfilling his commission for the Concerto for Orchestra nor from writing the Third Piano Concerto, his final work, intended to secure his wife’s future. Hence his gloomy circumstances led to two masterpieces (and gained him a long-awaited American reputation). They are magnificently served here by Javier Perianes and the musicians of the Münchner Philharmoniker under the direction of Pablo Heras-Casado.

Richard Strauss was in his element shortly after 1900 when he prepared to portray his now three-member family in a symphonic way: “Bubi” had expanded the cozy togetherness with his wife (and soprano) Pauline into a “trio con brio” since 1897 and the artist marriage was the greatest cheerfully mixed up. The press and the public were shocked: How could you write a symphony about yourself and divulge the most intimate secrets of your married life (musically)! Strauss, however, was convinced, like his great role model Goethe, that an artist fundamentally draws “from the poetic content of his own life” and was not at a loss to acknowledge the premiere of his “Sinfonia domestica” in the New York department store Wanamaker, which had been cleared out especially for this purpose, as ” and legitimate earning of a living for wife and child”.
