The inexhaustible strength of a genius: Neither the disillusionment that set in after his exile to the United States nor his declining health stopped Bartók from fulfilling his commission for the Concerto for Orchestra nor from writing the Third Piano Concerto, his final work, intended to secure his wife’s future. Hence his gloomy circumstances led to two masterpieces (and gained him a long-awaited American reputation). They are magnificently served here by Javier Perianes and the musicians of the Münchner Philharmoniker under the direction of Pablo Heras-Casado.

Richard Strauss was in his element shortly after 1900 when he prepared to portray his now three-member family in a symphonic way: “Bubi” had expanded the cozy togetherness with his wife (and soprano) Pauline into a “trio con brio” since 1897 and the artist marriage was the greatest cheerfully mixed up. The press and the public were shocked: How could you write a symphony about yourself and divulge the most intimate secrets of your married life (musically)! Strauss, however, was convinced, like his great role model Goethe, that an artist fundamentally draws “from the poetic content of his own life” and was not at a loss to acknowledge the premiere of his “Sinfonia domestica” in the New York department store Wanamaker, which had been cleared out especially for this purpose, as ” and legitimate earning of a living for wife and child”.

Gustav Mahler and the Munich Philharmonic share a very special connection. As a composer he sustainably linked the 19th-century Austro-German tradition and the modernism of the early 20th century. His works have been a substantial part of the Munich Philharmonic’s core repertoire ever since and the orchestra has excelled on many occasions.

The Munich Philharmonic is opening up its vast archives, giving listeners the opportunity to enjoy one of the richest collections of recordings by legendary artists. On the centenary of Gustav Mahler’s death, Christian Thielemann conducted a concert programme with Mahler’s songs to poems from “Des Knaben Wunderhorn” by Friedrich Rückert sung by the renowned Michael Volle, as well as the Adagio from Mahler’s unfinished Symphony No. 10. The live recording of this exact concert performance has been exclusively lifted from our orchestra’s historical archives and will be released on the MPHIL label for the very first time this spring.

World-famous conductor Lorin Maazel was chief conductor of the Münchner Philharmoniker until shortly before his death in July 2014 at the age of 84.
This live recording, which happened in February 2014, is probably the last recording of Maazel. It documents an acclaimed and moving concert in the Munich Philharmonie with Lorin Maazel and the Münchner Philharmoniker and their choir per-forming Verdi’s famous requiem. The excellent soloists were Anja Harteros (soprano), Daniela Barcellona (mezzo-soprano), Wookyung Kim (tenor) and Georg Zeppenfeld (bass).

These recordings are from late in Celibidache’s career, recorded between 1989 and 1991 (he died in 1996 at the age of 84). They are representative of the expansive and mystical approach to Bruckner that he developed during his tenure with the Munich Philharmonic. The timings tell the tale. The 4th, for example, is over 1 hour 20 minutes long, compared say with 63 minutes for Haitink’s Philips recording with the Concertgebouw. No major conductor whom I can find has recorded a 4th that is less than 10 minutes shorter than this one. Interestingly, the expansiveness is not uniform. The major stretch occurs in the finale (30″13′ for Celibidache, vs. 19″49′ for Haitink).
