Provenance is the new album from two legends of Australian music – a survey of intimate ballads that showcases the superlative craftsmanship of platinum-selling legendary singer Vince Jones and multi-ARIA-winning pianist Paul Grabowsky.

The title refers to the returning-to-roots that this album represents. Vince and Paul first worked together in the 1980s, when Grabowsky was music director to Jones; Provenance marks a renewed collaboration between the pair after several decades apart. But the word also describes the music which the duo chose to record: ballads that showcase the essential elements of their craft, elements that have been the foundations of their astonishing careers, pared down to the intimate combination of piano and voice (and occasionally piano and flumpet – a hybrid of trumpet and flugelhorn).

A few years later, millions fell in love with Guaraldi’s Peanuts music. But the pianist’s first big breakthrough and best album was this 1962 LP, which shot to #24 thanks to the #22 pop hit Cast Your Fate to the Wind . This reissue adds alternate takes of that Guaraldi original plus Manha De Carnaval; O Nosso Amor , and Felicidade.

The first time you listen to this disc you will undoubtedly be transported directly back to your childhood. Charles Schulz’s Peanuts characters will go toe-tapping and funky-dancing through your mind’s eye. Play it a few more times, though (ignoring the dialogue snippets, if you can), and you will begin to truly revel in Guaraldi’s wonderful, humorous, deep piano playing. You’ll hear why he’s such an influence on new age ivory tickler George Winston, but you’ll also realize that Winston’s holiday music never quite sparkles with the underlying passion, and humor, that twinkles in these grooves. Buy it for the nostalgia–keep it because it will remain one of the most enchanting albums in your holiday collection.

Vince Guaraldi’s name will forever be inextricably linked to Charlie Brown’s, thanks to the iconic piano jazz music Guaraldi composed and performed with his trio for 17 Peanuts television specials and a feature film. It all started in 1964, with A Boy Named Charlie Brown, a never-aired documentary on Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz that first brought Snoopy and the gang to life. Producers wanted a jazz soundtrack and approached Guaraldi after Dave Brubeck said he was too busy. In two weeks Guaraldi came up with Linus And Lucy, the freshness of the music perfectly enhancing the simplicity of the animation.

Despite the co-billing, Sete only appears on the second half of the album, leaving the Guaraldi trio to knock out a crisp series of standard pop tunes of the time (“I’m a Loser,” “People,” “More”) and two memorable Guaraldi originals (“Nobody Else,” “El Matador”) in its patented mainstream and Latin modes in the first half. When Sete turns up, the set goes all-Brazilian as the two display their blended, intertwined teamwork for the third and last time on records in “Favela” and a brace of tunes from Black Orpheus. Though it is only a partial collaboration, this album has a bit more fire than their previous ones, possibly due to the live factor.

Vince Guaraldi was a well-respected jazz pianist whose greatest success came from avenues usually closed to contemporary jazz artists: he enjoyed a hit single at a time when jazz had largely been exiled from the pop charts, and he scored a series of very successful animated television specials (namely the Charlie Brown seasonal specials scores and soundtracks for which his name has become synonymous), a medium where cookie-cutter pop music was traditionally the order of the day. Beginning with 1962’s Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus and its Gold-certified single “Cast Your Fate to the Wind” (the B-side of “Samba de Orpheus”) and its Grammy nomination for Best Instrumental Jazz Composition, Guaraldi was on his way to a run of hit records including a few with Brazilian guitar great Bola Sete, and 1964’s The Latin Side of Vince Guaraldi and Jazz Impressions of a Boy Named Charlie Brown, Guaraldi cemented his place in American jazz via his popularity in his hometown of San Francisco. His association with Peanuts also opened the door to a slew of other television work. Over the next 12 years before his death in 1976, he would start and abandon a recording label, release six more albums, and keep up a full schedule of live performances with his own group and playiung with with orchestras in addition to his television commitments.

Vince Gill – Okie (2019) [Official Digital Download 24bit/44,1kHz]

Reclaiming a derogatory Dust Bowl-era term, Okie is loosely a concept album about human struggle in the Sooner State. But dealing with issues of divisiveness, faith and heartache, it’s also pure Americana. Taking a break from the bluegrass that has largely defined his later career, Gill turns to his gentle country singer-songwriter roots: Opener “I Don’t Wanna Ride the Rails No More” has echoes of his days in Pure Prairie League. As a lyricist, he pulls no punches, looking at how pro-choice is still not an easy choice on the sweet-toned “What Choice Will You Make” and embracing his Christianity on the gently shuffling “The Red Words” and “When My Amy Prays,” which finds Gill hitting the spine-shivering high notes. “Forever Changed” is a frank warning to abusers, while the hymn-like “The Price of Regret” is a plea for kindness. Gill also pays tribute to his heroes on “Nothin’ Like a Guy Clark Song” and “A World Without Haggard,” offering up what he learned from each. The music is mellow, but the messages are deep.

GRAMMY Award-winning MCA Nashville country star Vince Gill revealed via NPR his new album Down To My Last Bad Habit is set for release on February 12. Gill wrote/co-wrote, co-produced and is a featured musician on all 12 songs on Down To My Last Bad Habit. The album also includes guest vocals from Little Big Town and Cam.

‘Forty years into this, it’s still as much fun as it s ever been to play music,’ notes Gill. ‘At the end of the day, what I get excited about is doing something I haven’t done before. When I record a song, I feel successful if I’ve accomplished something new.’

Down to My Last Bad Habit marks Gill s first solo album since 2011 s Guitar Slinger. In 2013, The Oklahoma native partnered with famed steel guitarist Paul Franklin on Bakersfield as a tribute to the Bakersfield sound of Buck Owens and Merle Haggard. With 20 GRAMMY Awards to his credit, Gill has emerged as country music s most eloquent and impassioned champion. He is both a world-class guitar picker and a wide-ranging songwriter whose compositions earned him entry into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005 and the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2007. Gill has produced albums for LeAnn Rimes, Amy Grant as well as Ashley Monroe and has made guest appearances on over 500+ albums including Barbra Streisand, Eric Clapton, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, George Jones and more.

Gill returns this holiday season for a set of shows at Nashville s famed Ryman Auditorium with his wife, Christian contemporary artist, Amy Grant. In February, Gill is set to reunite with Lyle Lovett for a 13-city tour of acoustic shows.

Like wine, music improves with age. And Conor O’Brien’s matures well. From the Malahide coast, where the Irishman composed his first three albums on his farm, to the hubbub of Dublin, the villager has changed his scene. Much like his album. After Becoming a Jackal, Awayland and Darling Arythmetic, three soft pop-folk albums, the songwriter with ice-cube eyes has released The Art Of Pretenting To Swim. O’Brien has read the Pro Tools manual for a shorter album length (44 minutes) and much more elaborate detail. We find simple poems (A Trick Of The Light) where the Irishman sings “We are the dawn, we carry the sun”, while he tells of the conflict between blinding faith and mathematical reason on Ada. With his string arrangements (Ada) which are more reminiscent of The Clientele than Damien Rice, beautiful electro (Real Go-Getter), soul (Long Time Waiting), brass (Love Came With All That It Brings), soft synths (Sweet Saviour) and a warming voice, the opus is addictive and unpretentious. – Charlotte Saintoin

Conor O’Brien presents Villagers’ fifth studio album ‘Fever Dreams’. Escapism is a very necessary pursuit right now, and ‘Fever Dreams’ follows it to mesmerising effect. It works like all the best records – it becomes a mode of transport; it picks you up from where you are and sets you down elsewhere. Written over the course of two years, the main bodies of the songs were recorded in a series of full-band studio sessions in late 2019 and early 2020. Over the course of the long, slow pandemic days, O’Brien refined them in his tiny home studio in Dublin, and the album was then mixed by David Wrench (Frank Ocean, The xx, FKA Twigs). O’Brien says on the gestation of ‘Fever Dreams’: ‘I had an urge to write something that was as generous to the listener as it was to myself. Sometimes the most delirious states can produce the most ecstatic, euphoric and escapist dreams’.

“I have heard an angel sing,” wrote Schubert after he heard Paganini play in Vienna in 1828. Vilde Frang, partnered by pianist Michael Lifits, juxtaposes and links works by these two violinist-composers, who lived vastly different lives, yet are musically connected. Both found inspiration in the human voice and Frang sheds new light on Schubert’s demands for virtuosity and on Paganini’s sensitive musicality.
