Undoubtedly our interest and passion for the works composed throughout the 20th century have informed the choice of repertoire proposed in this record – the result of a long period of study and artistic collaboration. This repertoire has been part of our concert programmes for many years and represents four major milestones of the chamber music repertoire for the flute and guitar. Each work proposes a different compositional style – peculiar musical grammars and language with a varied and contrasting artistic vision delivered by each composer.

The disc opens and closes with water, acqua (in Algherese dialect, aigua), which has for many centuries been a source of artistic inspiration, subject of myth and for some civilisations, even religious worship.

Another album in the Anthology of Polish A Cappella Music series was being created on the eve of the first anniversary of Juliusz Łuciuk’s death. This time, the “Collegium Cantorum” Choir of the Częstochowa Philharmonic reached for the internationally unique work Vesperae in assumptione Beatae Mariae Virginis (Vespers on the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary). While researching the output of the Częstochowa-Cracow composer one can sense his individual style, based on a few indefeasible pillars. One of them is profound respect for tradition, with particular emphasis on the Gregorian chant, both in terms of the melodic solutions of the monody and the entire culture and performance conditions surrounding the chant. Other pillars of his work are the quest for colour in harmony and the peculiar simplicity of emotions reflecting the composer’s personality. The Vespers presented on this album can be considered the quintessence of the style of Juliusz Łuciuk, an artist who was particularly passionate about sacred music.

Animals 2018 Remix – The iconic 1977 Pink Floyd album has been remixed for the first time by James Guthrie. Animals is a concept album, focusing on the social-political conditions of mid-1970s Britain, and was a change from the style of the band’s earlier work. The album was developed from a collection of unrelated songs into a concept which describes the apparent social and moral decay of society, likening the human condition to that of animals. Taking inspiration from George Orwell’s Animal Farm, the album depicts the different classes of people as animals with pigs being at the top of the social chain, dropping down to the sheep as the mindless herd following what they are told, with dogs as the business bosses getting fat on the money and power they hold over the other. Although it’s been a long time since 1977, the narrative of the album still resonates today as our social and economic situation mirrors that of the time.

Johann Baptist Vaňhal was one of Haydn’s most important contemporaries. His symphonies in particular were widely admired throughout Europe, with music historian Dr Charles Burney reporting that Vaňhal’s symphonies were known in England before those of Haydn. The finely wrought works in this recording include the Symphony in F minor, considered one of his best in this genre, and the Symphony in C which was highly popular in its day. All of these works illustrate Vaňhal’s sophisticated mastery of musical structure, imaginative handling of the orchestra, and a profusion of memorable themes.

This is probably his best since the mid 00’s, and that’s saying a lot as RA has never in his life released a bad album. The richness in the sound, the vocals, the instrumentation and the sheer variety is impressive. Hard to pick highlights but Rollercoaster is a stellar opener, Somethings Missing is gem of a song in this otherworldly lo-fi with casiotone aesthetic that makes it hit so much harder. Doylestown Girl is standard Ryan fare at its best. Run might be my favorite song on here. Truly a bit of every era is on here and done at it’s best in every regard. Who knew such an accomplished artist could this amazing decades into his career. He is the GOAT.
