Conor O’Brien presents Villagers’ fifth studio album ‘Fever Dreams’. Escapism is a very necessary pursuit right now, and ‘Fever Dreams’ follows it to mesmerising effect. It works like all the best records – it becomes a mode of transport; it picks you up from where you are and sets you down elsewhere. Written over the course of two years, the main bodies of the songs were recorded in a series of full-band studio sessions in late 2019 and early 2020. Over the course of the long, slow pandemic days, O’Brien refined them in his tiny home studio in Dublin, and the album was then mixed by David Wrench (Frank Ocean, The xx, FKA Twigs). O’Brien says on the gestation of ‘Fever Dreams’: ‘I had an urge to write something that was as generous to the listener as it was to myself. Sometimes the most delirious states can produce the most ecstatic, euphoric and escapist dreams’.

“I can only really speak for myself but I’ve found a lot of strength and solace in reading books that were written before the internet was invented. I think music, art and literature saved my brain.” This is how Villagers’ frontman Conor O’Brien describes the anxious period brought on by the pandemic in April 2020, the isolation of which was used to create his fifth album. Fever Dreams focuses on the senses that touch the heart, moving away from narrative and plastic themes. In his cracked voice, the Irishman repeats a few sparse lyrics over luxurious orchestrations, where glockenspiel, piano, strings and sax predominate in successive lyrical flights (So Simpatico, Deep In My Heart), giving substance to his feverish, sometimes sober reveries (Full Faith In Providence, Song In Seven). An ode to sensitive reality rather than imaginary networks, these ten delicate, kinetic miniatures weave a viscerally poetic pop-folk story, close to London’s The Clientele. A delight.
