This captivating new Bach release will become a timeless piece of music which can only come from the outstanding combination of Giuliano Carmignola and Concerto Köln.

Though presenting a traditional piece, Carmignola and Concerto Köln bring new and outstanding colours into this often recorded repertoire, and their temperamental performance introduces a sparkling and thrilling interpretation of Bach’s concertos. Carmignola’s fiery and successful “Vivaldi con moto” will be continued with a more subtle and traditional Bach Concerto recording, a Co-Production between Deutsche Grammophon and Deutschlandfunk.

Carmignola is a unique artist and one of today’s most charismatic and captivating violinists, prompting The Strad to say “Timing is everything, and Carmignola has the timing of Sinatra. Rubato, portamento, pauses, tight-rope showmanship.”

With its new album “Concertos 4 Violins”, the specialist ensemble for early music, Concerto Köln, takes a look at the unique repertoire niche of concertos written for four solo violins. “It must have been a challenge to bring together four solo violins, four virtuosos with four different personalities, four egos. But the result is harmony, a dialogue, and an agreement between four people who achieve a whole. I wish this would more often be part of our daily lives”, states Jesús Merino Ruiz from the quartet of soloists.

Handel, Scarlatti, Corelli, Stradella, Muffat … From 1650 to the beginning of the eighteenth century, Rome exercised an immense power in attracting composers from all over Europe and experienced an intense moment of musical activity, because of – or in spite of – the papal administration. It was a prosperous period with a melting pot of influences. The programme devised here by the Roman conductor, Rinaldo Alessandrini, offers a complete and personal vision of the time, passionate and secular, lyrical (made sublime by Sandrine Piau) and orchestral, romantic in every way. Rinaldo Alessandrini is one of the leading figures in the international early music scene. His predilection for the Italian repertory and his constant preoccupation with the expressive characteristics specific to the Italian style of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries are the decisive factors that orientate his musical approach and interpretative options, both as the head of Concerto Italiano, of which he is the founder and director, and as a soloist and guest conductor.

More than any question of instruments, strings, bows, tunings, or temperaments, the modern historical performance movement is about attitude—the desire to find in ancient music a living voice, filtered through vigorous scholarship, willing to experiment and push boundaries, and, most of all, capture the depths of emotion hidden in the score. Rinaldo Alessadrini and Concerto Italiano are some of the most successful exponents of this idiom, having recorded the complete Monteverdi madrigals on Opus 111 (highly recommended) as well as a host of other albums, from the birth of the Baroque to Bach and Vivaldi. In this album, simply titled 1600, Alessandrini has created a program that traces the rise of Italian four-part instrumental music from its earliest parting with vocal models to the rise of the string concerto, foreshadowing the development of the string quartet. In less capable hands, such an undertaking could have produced another mixed bag of early Baroque hits and misses. However, Alessandrini’s well chosen and elegantly assembled program never falters, guiding the listener with a gentle hand through the evolution of music from elaborations on Renaissance polyphonic models to the birth of the galant.

During the 1813-14 carnival season in Naples, Simon Mayr wrote a much-admired opera semiseria called Elena. The post-revolutionary Napoleonic era saw great enthusiasm for the rescue opera genre and Elena is a perfect example, in which a complex plot, based on French models, sees an innocent falsely accused of a capital offence. Mayr’s subtle accommodation of Neapolitan opera and Viennese Classicism ensures a series of choruses and recitatives that drive the action forward, punctuated with arias, romances, ensembles, lyric richness and moments of witty buffo color.

Five works make up this programme of Italian Baroque Christmas concertos from Concerto Copenhagen and Lars Ulrik Mortensen, and on paper it’s a temptingly multi-coloured bunch: opening with Corelli’s famous Op. 6 No. 8 masterpiece of 1690, concluding with Pietro Locatelli’s dramatic minor-keyed and undoubtedly Corelli-influenced Op. 1 No. 8, and in between a clutch of works whose composers equally owed stylistic debts to Corelli in varying degrees: Giuseppe Torelli, with his 1708 Concerto grosso in G minor; Torelli’s pupil Francesco Manfredini, with his 1718 Concerto grosso in C major; plus Vivaldi’s Concerto in E major RV 270, with its unusual directions that strings be played with mutes, and that there be no harpsichord continuo, perhaps to conjure up a peaceful stable scene.

Berlioz composed his Requiem at the request of a French government minister to commemorate the soldiers who died in the July Revolution in 1830. The Requiem would become one of Berlioz’s most popular works, among other things because of its imaginative instrumentation and gigantic orchestration, including four brass ensembles distributed throughout the hall. The work was also dear to the composer’s own heart. He once said, ‘If someone were to threaten to destroy all my works, I would beg for mercy on behalf of my Grande messe des morts.’

Ludwig van Beethoven’s ‘Nine Symphonies’ are the core repertoire of virtually every orchestra in the world and the Concertgebouworkest is no exception. Until the 1960s the Beethoven tradition of the Concertgebouworkest meant yearly symphony cycles that closed concert seasons. Later on Beethoven ‘Symphonies’ were mainly programmed one at a time, with a different (guest) conductor. This box set offers the finest recorded Concertgebouworkest live performances of the ‘Nine Symphonies’ since the 1970s. With a variety of conductors, from Leonard Bernstein to Nikolaus Harnoncourt it demonstrates the orchestra’s incredible versatility.

The Beethoven symphonies: all nine of them stunning masterworks, all nine performed countless times. Be that as it may, there are conductors who can recontextualise these symphonies in such a way that they sound completely new, as Iván Fischer proved in 2013 and 2014 in his Beethoven Series with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, spread out over two seasons. A veritable journey of discovery through a familiar landscape.

Concentus Musicus Wien continues its exploration of works of the Classical and pre-Romantic periods as envisioned by Nikolaus Harnoncourt. Stefan Gottfried conducts Schubert’s Symphony No. 5, written in 1816 at the age of 19, and the seventh of Haydn’s 12 London symphonies, No. 99, written in 1793. The former shows the melodic inventiveness and admirable mastery of form of a young composer, heir to the giant Haydn. Recorded live at the famous Musikverein in Vienna, this concert immortalises yet again the skill and the exceptional sound quality of this renowned progenitor of historically informed performance, which continues to perpetuate the work of its visionary founder.

Since the ninth century, the routes to Santiago de Compostela leading to the sanctuary of St. James have attracted countless pilgrims and exercised a potent mystique. What has received less attention is the music originally sung during the services in honour of the saint. Thanks to Marcel Peres’s in-depth study of the Codex Calixtinus, preserved at the Cathedral of Santiago, this recording can present a reconstruction of the musical gems contained in the rare twelfth-century manuscript which attests to multiple stylistic influences encountered on this indispensable and all-embracing pilgrimage.
