The piano pieces here trace a trajectory from the Edwardian poetry of Leo Livens to the overdubbing of Peter Reynolds by way of a century of evocative, descriptive and exciting miniatures. Reflecting pastoral, light and experimental traditions, these previously unrecorded works offer rich variety from neglected composers. Duncan Honeybourne enjoys a colorful and unique career as solo pianist, chamber musician, educator and artistic director. He has appeared at many major concert halls and at leading festivals, and has been a frequent broadcaster at home and abroad. One of his generation’s leading exponents of 20th century English piano music, several celebrated contemporary composers have also dedicated major new works to him. An inspiring teacher and educator, he has devised and written several recital programmes blending words and music and has created and directed several series of piano and chamber concerts. Duncan is also sought-after nationwide as a thought-provoking and entertaining lecturer on his experience of living with autism.

Dumpstaphunk – Where Do We Go From Here (2021) [Official Digital Download 24bit/44,1kHz]

In New Orleans, “groove” can be used as a noun, adjective, verb, or pronoun as well as a universal language, and a religion if you will, understood and aspired to by all. No current NOLA collective understands the concept and the history behind that fraught term better than Dumpstaphunk, led by Ivan and Ian Neville—sons of musical royalty Aaron and Art Neville, respectively—whose sound echos their fathers’ bands The Meters and The Neville Brothers, but amped up for a new century. Known for monster grooves and extended instrumental jams, and inspired by the energy that only crowds can provide, Dumpstaphunk’s recording catalog is dominated by live albums. Where Do We Go From Here, only their third studio collection in nearly 20 years together, has solved the problem of finding intensity without an audience by updating their famous 2017 political statement song, “Justice” (now called “Justice 2020”) and by putting their particular spin on three tunes that are part of the band’s collective musical foundation. An album whose title poses a question relevant not only to the band’s future but also to the state of the planet opens with all its funk rock guns blazing on a storming rendition of Buddy Miles’ “United Nation Stomp” (from his 1973 album Booger Bear), that features guest guitarists Marcus King and Waddy Wachtel. A cover of “Let’s Get At It” by obscure local ’70s funk band Blackmail keeps The Meters bounce alive. And Dumpstaphunk’s version of Sly Stone’s “In Time”—a noted favorite of Miles Davis among others—features drummer Alvin Ford Jr. expertly negotiating the tune’s wickedly complex rhythms. Echoes of horn driven funk from the likes of Average White Band and Tower of Power color the punchy “Itchy Boo.” Sonically, in-your-face volume is emphasized over dynamics throughout, though the levels come down slightly in certain tunes like the dance grooves of “Make It After All” and the throwback slice of Meters-like funk, “Backwash.” The funky spirit of New Orleans’ first family of the groove marches on. – Robert Baird

A composer admired by his contemporaries, Josquin Desprez (ca 1450-1521) was a solitary artist who sublimated in his chansons the melancholy character and the elegance emblematic of the Renaissance. For their first recording, Dulces Exuviae explore the intimacy of these chansons in a fresh light: the sweet melodies are embellished by ornaments and accompanied on the lute, leaving ample room for improvisation, and thus allowing music to come out all the more alive, delicate and filled with emotion.

Dukes of the Orient is the masterful pairing of vocalist John Payne (ex-Asia, GPS) with keyboardist Erik Norlander (Last in Line, Lana Lane) who now present their eponymous debut album, ten years in the making. The two are backed by a world-renown ensemble of top musicians including Jeff Kollman, Guthrie Govan, Moni Scaria and Bruce Bouillet on guitar and Jay Schellen on drums. Payne provides bass guitar and additional lead and rhythm guitar parts to complete the audiophile production. We hope you enjoy our back to the basics approach to the music here. Just straightforward small band, old school blues.” –Duke Robillard

For a number of years now, Sion Orgon has been crafting music that fuses abstract electronic mulch with the kind of bright melodies one would expect from a shiny pop group. Using avant-garde sensibilities and a vision partly shaped by his affiliation with both Thighpaulsandra and Coil, the Welsh producer/musician has never been afraid to push these into areas most artists of a similar disposition would never be bold enough to touch. At once catchy, psychedelic, filmic and disturbed, Sion Orgon’s work has a very distinctive feel to it that only arrives from a craftsman firmly locked on to his own path. Dust is the very latest collection of work, comprising six new tracks featuring Thighpaulsandra (Coil, Spiritualised, Julian Cope) on half of them and a number of other guests, including Claudio Gian, Lara Ward and Richard Johnson (Splintered, Theme). Somewhere amongst the many convoluted folds of often weird ‘n’ wonderful sounds are texts spoken by a number of random Finnish and Latvian people, further enhancing the multi-dimensional stealth attack of any one of the songs presented here. Like, again, his regular collaborator Thighpaulsandra’s work, Sion’s is enmeshed in rich layers and tangents so disparate they’d never make sense in anybody else’s hands, and despite the countless such claims put forward by those essentially creating music permanently stuck in first gear this truly is aimed at those who demand far more from their listening experience.
