Francis Comes Alive is the first official live recording from acclaimed musician Neal Francis. Recorded live at a sold out show at Chicago’s Thalia Hall, Francis Comes Alive is an electric body of work. Francis expanded his normal quartet into an eleven-piece freight train of a band featuring a horn section, percussion, backup vocalists, and keyboards. Ever the analog purist, the album was recorded direct to 1″ tape, mixed by Chris Connors (Bartees Strange, Lady Wray, El Michels Affair), and mastered by JJ Golden. Francis and company tear through twelve original songs, drawing from his debut album Changes and his sophomore album In Plain Sight. There are no edits, nor overdubs–this is Francis at his best. A full concert film directed by Alec Basse will follow later this year.

Athens, GA’s legendary post-punk trio’s sole 1989 “lost American underground classic” is now updated!
Before he was in Sugar or became the Drive-By Truckers’ producer-of-choice throughout their career, David Barbe led the Athens, GA trio Mercyland, who made one minor classic with 1989’s ‘No Feet On the Cowling’. The legendary Athens, Ga post-punk band’s sole album originally released in 1989 has been fully remixed and remastered.
For this 2023 reissue, Barbe went back to the master tapes and was able to remix the album to the robust sound that he intended it to be back in 1989. The “lost American Underground classic” album now sounds bigger and better than ever. Finding a raw but tuneful midpoint between British post-punk and American rock and roll, the band never sacrifices melody for power (or vice versa), adding counterpoint vocals and lyrics that explore the human experience without falling into obvious clichés.

Maxx Traxx (and Third Rail before them) were a scene unto themselves in the early 80s, happening live on-stage five-plus nights a week somewhere in the 312. Their two LPs, both recorded in 1982, are a sheer energy ride almost too explosive to be captured by studio tape. And yet these two stone classics would remain unanswered by a city as it moved determinedly toward the motorik sound of house. Among Bruckner’s Symphonies, the Fifth is his contrapuntal masterpiece; the grandest until the Eighth. The tour-de-force of a finale gives us an idea of what the finale of the Ninth might have been like. Its magnificent dark and halting opening with the descending bass line – so effectively recalled in the finale – is inimitable. Although long available only in a disfigured version by Franz Schalk, it is also distinct for never having been the subject to revision or, perhaps, even doubt on the part of Bruckner – who never heard it performed with an orchestra. And yet, when Bruckner wrote this masterpiece, he was still far from establishing himself as a composer in Vienna and his spirits were as low as ever, writing a friend that “my life has lost all joy and delight – in vain and for nothing.” A radiant pinnacle from amid darkness.
