From Schütz to Bräutigam by way of Schumann, Reger, Mauersberger, Poulenc and Werner – this recording by the Chamber Choir of the Freiburg University of Music under the direction of Morten Schuldt-Jensen takes the listener through the entire history of the motet. All of these compositions have one thing in common: their uniquely personal expressive force. The Drei Paulusmotetten by Fritz Werner, a contemporary of Poulenc, appear for the first time on HIGHRESAUDIO. These brilliant motets reflect the period and events of the time of their creation. The works by Werner and Mauersberger, for instance, were composed during the horrors of the Second World War.

“The basic gesture of the record is a continuous flow of an almost psychedelic nature, which explains why I enjoyed playing the record again and again, but kept drifting off in my thoughts. The permanent feeling of being in an alchemical laboratory, in which it bubbles continuously and strange acoustic smells rise up (i.e. this typical Muppet laboratory of Dr. Bunsen-Honeydew, in which the ball-headed master of ceremony with glasses mixes colourful liquids according to aesthetic feeling rather than exact experimental setup), doesn’t let go of you – or rather me in this case. The result: for some it’s gold, for others it’s Jazz-Por-Zell-An-Bruch etc. And Beaker like this: “mimimi.””

Sweden’s Henrik Meierkord’s main instrument is the cello, though he incorporates other stringed instruments and effect pedals to create his modern minimalistic ambience. ZEITREISEN is understated and graceful. The beautiful and mysterious string-fused soundscapes find emotional stimuli and tension within a melancholic soul.

Unlike many modern composers of his day, Bruno Maderna did not renounce the memory nor the traditions of the past, seeing contemporary music as having the same expressive and linguistic goals as old music but organised in a different way. The works in this recording represent the important role melody had in Maderna’s aesthetic, the lyrical significance of Widmung and Aulodia per Lothar seeing their recurrence in later pieces. Serenata No. 2 recalls the spirit of Webern, Serenata per un satellite is like a musical game, and the multi-stylistic Venetian Journal is a merciless social, human and musical satire.

The cello was a vital part of Catalan musical expression in the first half of the 20th century. Pablo Casals as composer and cello virtuoso was its revolutionary force, and his student Gaspar Cassadó joined him in writing superb transcriptions and expressive original works with a strong sense of tradition and national melodic flavour. Casablancas’ Cant per a Frederic Mompou ‘Remembrança’ pays homage to another great friend and colleague, while Enrique Granados’s soulful Madrigal is accompanied by delectable arrangements of piano works with cello such as the Goyescas. A digital single featuring more pieces by Casals, Cassadó and Mompou is available on 9.70354.

With his lyrical pieces, Grieg kept a kind of poetic piano diary. Between 1867 and 1901, 66 short character pieces were created, which appeared in ten booklets. Quickly become crowd-favourites, they are now part of the standard repertoire. For his debut album at PROSPERO, Israeli-American pianist Daniel Gortler has selected his 21 personal favorites.

Angel Stanislav Wang, winner of the 63rd Jaén Prize International Piano Competition in 2022, presents his Naxos debut recital with a selection of works he performed during the competition. Liszt’s Piano Sonata in B minor is an undisputed masterpiece of the Romantic era, while Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet in G minor is one of the most intense and eloquent chamber works of the 20th century. Spanish music is always present at Jaén and is represented here by a selection from Granados’s Goyescas, and by Laura Vega’s competition commission Poema a un amor eterno – a work of intense emotion, calling upon the pianist to be more of a poet or rhapsodist than a virtuoso.

Brahms’ early songs express an exuberance that may surprise those who are unfamiliar with this element of his music making. The Op. 6 set includes a Mediterranean-flavoured song in bolero rhythm and songs of hope and joy, displaying an apparent simplicity that was hard-won and the product of constant refinement. Based on folk songs, the Op. 14 collection is astonishingly varied, ranging from folk melodies to medieval harmonies and Baroque-styled richness. Elsewhere Brahms charts more melodious, elegiac settings in the Op. 19 set and confronts melancholy and loss in Op. 48.

In the early ’80s, Tânia Maria burst upon the U.S. music scene, playing an exuberant blend of Brazilian pop and jazz. Her first few recordings for Concord Picante (of which Come with Me is the third) remain her most rewarding sets. Maria’s spirited vocals and hyper keyboard work star throughout the date (which finds her interpreting seven of her originals and “Embraceable You”), supported by a sextet including both Eddie Duran and José Neto on guitar. …A gifted American jazz singer with a strong, wide-ranging voice and uncluttered style.
This isn’t Sutton’s tribute to Sinatra, although all the material here was recorded and made famous by him. Instead, it’s her working through the nooks and crannies of his songbook, and bringing things out and putting her own particular polish on them. It could be something with strings, such as “What’ll I Do?” or the intimacy of “I’ll Be Around,” which is as much a plea as a reassurance and resignation. Her version of “I Think of You,” whose melody comes originally from Rachmaninov, is gloriously subtle, the emotion as softly drawn out as the syllables. “I Could Have Told You” offers comfort and a shoulder to cry on, a gentle embrace that’s almost a whisper in Sutton’s hands. The music here is at its best when the orchestra keeps away – they simply become overkill, the too-sweet icing on an already-delicious cake. Perhaps her biggest test, though, comes at the end of the album, tackling “Fly Me to the Moon,” followed by a medley of “Last Dance” and “Dancing in the Dark,” taking on some of Sinatra’s most famous pieces. While on the former Sutton doesn’t always dig to the absolute heart of the song, the arrangement is stunning, with some outstanding piano from Christian Jacob that frees the songs from its ’50s shackles. Sutton does sparkle on the other piece, however, especially “Dancing in the Dark,” where the orchestral contributions are kept to a minimum, and the tracks swings in a minimalist fashion, Sutton’s voice imbued with the magic of the night. The album might have been inspired by Sinatra, but in her own way, Sutton has gone beyond her inspiration.
