Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Twenty First Century Recording Company

Equals is The Alarm’s first album since 2010’s Direct Action. It is a barnstorming collection of 11 songs that act as a retrenchment of old values and a poignant reflection of the tough times Mike and his wife Jules have been through in recent years. Produced by George Williams (who previously worked on 2005’s Under Attack), Equals opens with a torrent of epic rock numbers such as Two Rivers and Beautiful, which see Peters singing about coming to terms with the past before moving to enjoy life to the full. With Mike and Jules joined by Joe Strummer and The Mescaleros drummer Smiley and guitarist James Stevenson, who cut his teeth with Chelsea, Gen X and The Cult, the album encompasses twin harmony guitars, pounding drums and electronic layering, while guest guitarist Billy Duffy (The Cult) helps Peters and Stevenson blend acoustic and electric sounds on Coming Backwards.

Black Magic by Talibah Safiya is an anthology of the Southern sound as it has traveled through time. This work is inspired by the legacy of the hill country blues, gospel, and rhythm and blues traditions that have served as the building blocks of American music. Through a critical, yet hopeful lens, Talibah Safiya pays homage to the giants of the genres such as Jesse Mae Hemphill, R. L. Burnside, and Junior Kimbrough by reimagining their classic works. Talibah’s Black Magic is a spellbinding sonic journey that doubles as a capstone project born out of her time as an artist in residence at the University of Memphis’ School of Music Business, where the University’s record label, High Water Records maintains a robust catalog of classic Delta Music. Riffing on the work of ethnomusicologist, David Evans, Talibah Safiya breathes life into the Black American music tradition with the adroitness of an artist turned scholar.

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Piano Classics

Vincent d’Indy (1851-1931), a prominent French composer, wrote his only Piano Sonata in 1907. This rich and substantial sonata shows d’Indy’s meticulous craftsmanship and innovative harmonic language. The work unfolds with a sense of architectural integrity, marked by its four movements, each possessing distinctive character and emotion. Rooted in late-Romantic language, the sonata bears traces of his fascination with folk music and modal scales. The first movement, marked by its assertive motifs, leads into a lyrical and introspective second movement. The third movement introduces rhythmic vitality and dance-like elements, while the final movement builds to a triumphant conclusion. D’Indy’s harmonic complexity, coupled with a mastery of form, renders the Sonata a significant contribution to the piano repertoire. It stands as a testament to d’Indy’s artistic value, blending tradition with innovation.

The simpatico sophomore by the unstoppably prolific Alex Paterson and fellow Orb original Andy Falconer is an epic sail through the sky at night. Helmed by gentle spirits with warmth in their hearts, Seti feels cold and dark, yet also glowing and welcoming. Aboard a cosy candlelit spacecraft, the duo experience the cosmos as somewhere overwhelmingly infinite, yet reassuring and friendly. A sort of ‘ambient unplugged’, it’s full of acoustic instruments and nostalgic samples, folding space between the old world, and places where no man has gone before.

Elowen is a collection of tunes that we’re calling nu-medieval. This means that they use some medieval instruments and sounds (but not exclusively) and some medieval musical modes and scales. However, they are not medieval music. There is no historical accuracy or even an attempt at it. These are modern tunes with roots as much in current fantasy music and RPG music as in medieval times. There is even a subtle science fiction, alternative history, element. The aim is to take you elsewhere or elsewhen, for a short time.

Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © earMUSIC

10,000 Days is the eighteenth studio album by Canadian band Saga. It was recorded after Michael Sadler had explained that he would leave the band for family reasons. The title therefore alludes to the thirty years Sadler had been part of Saga (which equates roughly 10,000 days). Sadler left after the tour but would return to the fold four years later.

“Corkentellis” is the first full-band instrumental Saga ever recorded (“Conversations” had some lines sung through a vocoder, whereas “Voila!” and “Watching the Clock” were solo piano interludes by Jim Gilmour). The track’s unusual title is an amalgam of the names of three former Saga managers – Clive Corcoran, Geoff Kent and Michael Ellis. Along with “Book of Lies”, it has become a live favourite.

The first release on Jim O’Rourke’s legendary Moikai imprint in over two decades, ‘Spectral Evolution’ is a defining statement from Portuguese vanguard Rafael Toral, an album of subtly orchestral, jazz-inspired guitar music that’s been slowed to a vertiginous crawl. Using his arsenal of hand-made synths to sing like birds around stretched, steel-wound drones, he evokes Bach, Loren Connors, Gavin Bryars and Rhys Chatham on a longform piece full of conventional chord progressions and alchemical sleights of hand that will have you reeling, and no mistake.

The feeling is dispersed in the face of new beginnings. There is nothing in the music of Juan J. Colomer (Alzira, 1966) that does not speak about it: what he enunciates, what he leaves silent, what he does not completely conceal comes to intervene like the first day between those who listen to it. The luminous passages belong to the frank way in which an idea is shaped and its detours, where it appears without veils, as essential as the darkness that, from time to time, inhabits it. Both are openings to what his work is. We look for ways of access to the present and past, to small pieces of the map, to the abandoned territory or memory, to the contradictions it interrogates. Although this time it is titled “genesis,” Colomer modulates a thought without origin or end, within a perpetually restarted discourse. This is how his invention lives outside. Perhaps in its living references, without dates or places exactly assignable, it retains the sense in which it inscribes, deprived of its ancient power, enigmatic connections, metamorphoses of times. For this reason, although it is about genesis, Colomer’s works become strange to the conditions of their creation, they are beyond the finished and the unfinished, they radiate as far as we like to imagine.
