Monsieur de Sainte-Colombes life is largely shrouded in mystery, and almost nothing was known of his music until these Concerts deux violes esgales were discovered in Geneva in 1966. Full of inspiration and fantasy, these pieces are often technically very demanding, innovatively deploying the viols entire range and putting players to the test in ways that were unprecedented in French viol literature. The sound of the viols is as haunting as the musics titles are teasingly expressive, and for their extraordinary imagination, originality and rare sonic splendour these works are justly considered one of the great monuments of European Baroque music.

Internationally acclaimed pianist Polina Osetinskaya began her career at the age of five and was soon acclaimed as a wunderkind in the former Soviet Union. She gave her first concert at the age of six and entered the Central Music School of the Moscow Conservatory at the age of seven.
The first teacher of Ms. Osetinskaya was her father Oleg Osetinsky, then she continued her studies at the Leningrad Conservatory with Marina Wolf and later at the Moscow Conservatory with Vera Gornostaeva.
Ms. Osetinskaya has performed at Carnegie Hall, Vienna’s Musikverein, London’s Barbican Centre, Rome’s Teatro Argentina, as well as in Russia, Germany, Poland, Israel. She also appears at festivals in Europe, Russia and the United States.

An abandoned person remembers the once so happy time, laments his suffering and begs for the lost beloved. A scene that has inspired poets and composers time and again; especially in the baroque era, its protagonists were often transported to the idealised pastoral and nymph world of Arcadia. This emotional world is not only present in opera, but also in the smaller form of the cantata. Three Italian composers of the 17th and early 18th centuries devoted themselves to the same theme, but in the different arrangement of their works they show exemplarily the development from the High to the Late Baroque. Giovanni Legrenzi, Giovanni Bononcini and Domenico Scarlatti succeed – after all, it is about nothing less than unconditional love until death – in expressing great emotions even on a smaller scale. The ensemble Paper Kite and soprano Marie Heeschen portray them with passion and precision.

Porter Wayne Wagoner was an American country music singer known for his flashy Nudie and Manuel suits and blond pompadour. In 1967, he introduced singer Dolly Parton on his television show, and they were a well-known vocal duo throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s. “Tore Down” is his album, released in 1974 via RCA Victor label.

For the first time since their original release, they have also been remastered by PT songwriter and frontman, Steven Wilson. The new mastering has considerably less compression and limiting for a more dynamic listening experience. In Absentia was the band’s seventh studio album, first released in 2002, and was the first in a run of 3 albums that for many represent the pinnacle of the band’s artistic achievements. It was something of a breakthrough for the band, selling three times more than previous releases. Following on from 2000’s Lightbulb Sun it had a distinctly heavier tone, partly due to the addition of legendary drummer Gavin Harrison, and was also their first for major label Lava / Atlantic Records. In Absentia features many of Porcupine Tree’s most loved songs including “Trains”, “The Sound of Muzak” and “Blackest Eyes”. While not a formal concept album, many of the songs have common themes related to serial killers, youthful innocence gone wrong, and observations of the modern world, setting a template for many of Wilson’s future songs. These new vinyl editions will be released on double heavyweight audiophile 180g black vinyl presented in gatefold packaging.

The Polyphonia Ensemble Berlin, which was founded by musicians from the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, presents French chamber music from around 1900 on this recording. The featured composers – Théodore Dubois, Vincent d’Indy and André Caplet – may have been overshadowed by their better-known contemporaries, but they nevertheless played major and original roles in the development of music in France, bequeathing us an appreciable quantity of remarkable works. At the same time, they represent three generations in the development of music at the dawn of the 20th century.

The final chords of the revolutionary world premiere of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony at the K”arntnertortheater in Vienna on May 7, 1824 had hardly faded away (one of the many enthusiastic listeners in the hall was the 27-year-old Franz Schubert!) when the star composer got straight to work on a new string quartet; the work, following his latest string quartet, Op. 95 which was composed 14 years earlier, was commissioned by Prince Nikolaus Galitzin and became the Quartet in E-flat major, Op. 127. In the same year, and interestingly written in immediate spatial and temporal proximity to the studio in which Beethoven was just about to open the doors to musical modernism, Schubert, after having spent several weeks in the Vienna general hospital for treatment of his suspected syphilis desease, composed his String Quartet No. 13 in A minor, D. 804, the so-called Rosamunde Quartet. It may be said that, precisely due to Schubert’s bleak outlook on the future, the categories of “loss” and “memory” became central parameters of an entire composition for the first time in music history. Both quartets are performed by the internationally acclaimed Pacific Quartet Vienna for their third album release with Gramola Records.

The acronym that gives name to the PLS. trio is from the very gifted young Italian pianist/composer Pier Luigi Salami. Together with his American rhythm section, consisting of bassist Martin Fowler and drummer Shawn Crowder, the New York based trio have released an enormously winning debut with East River. The international make-up of the trio is reflected in this debut which is neither European nor American in style but rather a balanced modern jazz approach subtly enhanced with airy electronic effects.

It all goes back to year 1965. Spencer Davis Group was recording a single for the label Phillips Germany after having released its number one hit “Keep on Running”. Alongside the guitarist and a former German teacher Spencer Davis, Steve Winwood and his older brother Muff also the upcoming drummer Pete York was a member of the band. The producer of the session was Siggi Loch. “We’ve been friends ever since”, Pete York, who turned 70 in August, reminisces. “Maybe it is Siggi’s birthday present that I got the chance to release this album on ACT”.

Beethoven opened the new century with the publication of his first symphony, but also with that of other important works, such as four piano sonatas (Opp. 26, 27, and 28) and two sonatas for piano and violin – in A Minor, Op. 23, and F Major, Op. 24. Originally, the two sonatas were published in 1801 as a set, under the opus number 23. But something as trivial as their having been mistakenly printed on different-size paper in their second reprint a year later compelled the publisher (and Beethoven) to present them as two distinct works, each with its own opus number – probably to save both face and money. Unlike its companion in F major, the Sonata Op. 23 is a rather stark work, remaining in the darkness of minor keys, and often in a contained, two-voice writing in the piano part. Success was granted to Op. 23, however, after a rather negative response to Beethoven’s three earlier works in the genre, published in 1798 as Op. 12.

This to mark that in 2022 it is 50 years since Popol Ace launched their first album Popol Vuh, – a release that was honored with Norway’s first Grammy award! From ups and downs where Polydor International declines on an offer of a collaboration between Frank Zappa and Popol Ace, but says yes to Queens studio technician Mike Stone. From dirty and smelly rehearsal rooms in London to dream conditions in Ibiza and to a farm in Velindre in Wales where Genesis had recorded the Lamb. Then to the recording of the album Stolen from Time in an acclaimed studio outside Paris where Elton John had recorded many of his hits. Via tours, concerts, TV and radio appearances in Scandinavia and out in Europe and back again.
It was 50 years ago today celebrates the band’s life and legacy with this 3LP box release and digital release on all streaming services as a reminder of what an astonishing band Popol Ace was!
