Alma is a collaboration between six-time GRAMMY’s-nominated Cuban composer and pianist Omar Sosa and celebrated Italian trumpet and flugelhorn player Paolo Fresu, with guest cello contributions on four tracks by noted Brazilian conductor, arranger, producer and cellist Jaques Morelenbaum. The compositions are all written by Omar Sosa and Paolo Fresu, except for Under African Skies , a version of the popular track from Paul Simon’s Graceland. The music on Alma (soul) is generally melodic and medium-paced, except for a fiery version of Omar s composition Angustia. Fresu’s flugelhorn work is sweet and warm and the rich and playful musical connection between Fresu and Sosa is evident throughout the recording.

On their first album of new material since 2009’s Somewhere on the Other Side of Nowhere, Powerman 5000 stick with their industrial metal sound to bring listeners their vision of tomorrow with their seventh studio album, Builders of the Future. Like watching an old science fiction movie set in a far-off time that has already come and gone, the album feels like a dated prediction of what the metal of the future is supposed to sound like. With a blend of synths, pulsing beats, and driving guitars, Builders of the Future is essentially a glossier take on the sound the band began exploring in 1999 with Tonight the Stars Revolt! Despite Spider One and company (which, it should be noted, is an almost entirely new band than the one that appeared on their last album of new material) mostly sticking to their comfort zone, the most exciting moments of Builders of the Future come when the band breaks from tradition, like the languid “I Want to Kill You,” a slow burner that starts innocuously enough as an acoustic ballad before the addition of some droning, guttural fuzz takes the track in an unexpectedly sublime direction. If PM5K’s career has done anything, it’s shown that they’re one of the best in the business when it comes to pulse-pounding, adrenaline-fueled industrial metal. This makes the moments when they step away from their strength to try something new all the more interesting, even if they’re few and far between. – Gregory Heaney

The story of Parcels is both a childhood dream and a wonderful human adventure. Formed just four years ago, for what is the “first real band” for each of its members, the quintet (music-lovers and Steely Dan-addicts) quickly sold out their first concerts in Byron Bay, a surfing spot on the East coast of Australia. But despite being half a world away, the smell of Berlin nights lured them over to try their luck in Europe. Good move: the international music hub that is the German capital lead them to a signing with the Parisian label Kitsuné. After two EPs where they demonstrated their compatibility, Thomas Bangalter came to congratulate them and give them some advice following a concert in Paris, producing their single Overnight a few months later.

Monsieur de Sainte-Colombes life is largely shrouded in mystery, and almost nothing was known of his music until these Concerts deux violes esgales were discovered in Geneva in 1966. Internationally acclaimed pianist Polina Osetinskaya began her career at the age of five and was soon acclaimed as a wunderkind in the former Soviet Union. She gave her first concert at the age of six and entered the Central Music School of the Moscow Conservatory at the age of seven.
The first teacher of Ms. Osetinskaya was her father Oleg Osetinsky, then she continued her studies at the Leningrad Conservatory with Marina Wolf and later at the Moscow Conservatory with Vera Gornostaeva.
Ms. Osetinskaya has performed at Carnegie Hall, Vienna’s Musikverein, London’s Barbican Centre, Rome’s Teatro Argentina, as well as in Russia, Germany, Poland, Israel. She also appears at festivals in Europe, Russia and the United States.

An abandoned person remembers the once so happy time, laments his suffering and begs for the lost beloved. A scene that has inspired poets and composers time and again; especially in the baroque era, its protagonists were often transported to the idealised pastoral and nymph world of Arcadia. This emotional world is not only present in opera, but also in the smaller form of the cantata. Three Italian composers of the 17th and early 18th centuries devoted themselves to the same theme, but in the different arrangement of their works they show exemplarily the development from the High to the Late Baroque. Giovanni Legrenzi, Giovanni Bononcini and Domenico Scarlatti succeed – after all, it is about nothing less than unconditional love until death – in expressing great emotions even on a smaller scale. The ensemble Paper Kite and soprano Marie Heeschen portray them with passion and precision.

For the first time since their original release, they have also been remastered by PT songwriter and frontman, Steven Wilson. The new mastering has considerably less compression and limiting for a more dynamic listening experience. In Absentia was the band’s seventh studio album, first released in 2002, and was the first in a run of 3 albums that for many represent the pinnacle of the band’s artistic achievements. It was something of a breakthrough for the band, selling three times more than previous releases. Following on from 2000’s Lightbulb Sun it had a distinctly heavier tone, partly due to the addition of legendary drummer Gavin Harrison, and was also their first for major label Lava / Atlantic Records. In Absentia features many of Porcupine Tree’s most loved songs including “Trains”, “The Sound of Muzak” and “Blackest Eyes”. While not a formal concept album, many of the songs have common themes related to serial killers, youthful innocence gone wrong, and observations of the modern world, setting a template for many of Wilson’s future songs. These new vinyl editions will be released on double heavyweight audiophile 180g black vinyl presented in gatefold packaging.

The Polyphonia Ensemble Berlin, which was founded by musicians from the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, presents French chamber music from around 1900 on this recording. The featured composers – Théodore Dubois, Vincent d’Indy and André Caplet – may have been overshadowed by their better-known contemporaries, but they nevertheless played major and original roles in the development of music in France, bequeathing us an appreciable quantity of remarkable works. The final chords of the revolutionary world premiere of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony at the K”arntnertortheater in Vienna on May 7, 1824 had hardly faded away (one of the many enthusiastic listeners in the hall was the 27-year-old Franz Schubert!) when the star composer got straight to work on a new string quartet; the work, following his latest string quartet, Op. 95 which was composed 14 years earlier, was commissioned by Prince Nikolaus Galitzin and became the Quartet in E-flat major, Op. 127. In the same year, and interestingly written in immediate spatial and temporal proximity to the studio in which Beethoven was just about to open the doors to musical modernism, Schubert, after having spent several weeks in the Vienna general hospital for treatment of his suspected syphilis desease, composed his String Quartet No. 13 in A minor, D. 804, the so-called Rosamunde Quartet. It may be said that, precisely due to Schubert’s bleak outlook on the future, the categories of “loss” and “memory” became central parameters of an entire composition for the first time in music history. Both quartets are performed by the internationally acclaimed Pacific Quartet Vienna for their third album release with Gramola Records.

The acronym that gives name to the PLS. trio is from the very gifted young Italian pianist/composer Pier Luigi Salami. Together with his American rhythm section, consisting of bassist Martin Fowler and drummer Shawn Crowder, the New York based trio have released an enormously winning debut with East River. The international make-up of the trio is reflected in this debut which is neither European nor American in style but rather a balanced modern jazz approach subtly enhanced with airy electronic effects.
