Ludovica Burtone is an Italian violinist with an incomparable wealth of musical experiences and a sound that transcends categorization. Her vast compositional oeuvre extends from classical quartets to Brazilian music and contemporary jazz. Burtone has performed in some of Europe’s top orchestras and alongside icons such as Jon Batiste and Dream Theater and in the world scene with musicians such as Arijit Singh and Camila Meza. Now, she is fusing her passion for the string quartet with her unique compositional voice on her debut album Sparks. Due out on March 3, 2023 via Outside in Music, Sparks is an autobiographical story of Burtone’s journey to the United States from Italy, documenting a prolific passage from playing classical music to jazz, world music and beyond. Sparks was born long before Burtone set pen to paper to begin composing. She grew up in a small city (or, “large town”, as she jokes) in northeast Italy, but had dreams of exploring her passion for music elsewhere. Armed with her violin and an appetite for discovery, Burtone began with what she knew: the orchestra. From playing in her regional symphony and then earning a postgraduate degree in Barcelona, she was led back to her hometown to pursue her masters, of all places, where the local conservatory had recently opened up a jazz program. Enraptured by this new form of expression, Burtone received a scholarship to pursue jazz and creative music at the Banff Centre, and while on that side of the Atlantic, started to spend time in New York City. There, she would blaze a trail in territories both physically and musically uncharted. Burtone moved to the United States soon after, earning a diploma in jazz composition at Berklee College of Music in two years. The spark that Burtone fanned into flame has since directed her to some of the most lauded venues in America including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Boston Opera House, Radio City Music Hall, the Jazz Standard, among others.

On Ditty Blei, Icelandic guitarist Hilmar Jensson and an acoustic quintet perform his challenging compositions, imbuing them with a rhythmic flair and melodic and harmonic interest that balances offbeat grooves and improvisational freedom, rock extraversion and jazz discipline. Intricate counterpoint from the horns, abrasive guitar solos, constantly shifting metres and time-bending percussive commentary complete the picture. Stark yet tender emotional underpinning engages the listener as Jensson lays out his vision of jazz present and jazz future.
The second recording for Songlines by the guitarist of Jim Black’s Alasnoaxis is very different from the improv/ambient/collage approach of Tyft – even though its trio of Jensson, Black and Andrew D’Angelo is back. Here an acoustic quintet runs with Jensson’s challenging compositions, giving them a rhythmic flair and melodic/harmonic interest that might recall Chris Speed’s Yeah No in its balance between offbeat grooves and improvisational freedom, rock extraversion and jazz discipline. Intricate counterpoint from the horns, abrasive guitar solos, constantly shifting metres, and Black’s time-bending percussive commentary complete the picture. With a stark but tender emotional underpinning that engages the listener, Jensson lays out his vision of jazz present and jazz future, even if he questions whether jazz is a useful descriptor for his music: “Ever since the early ’90s I’ve had a close relationship with the music and musicians of the “downtown” scene. There are many exciting things happening in Iceland but this is the core of my musical self. New York is where this style was born and where the strongest players are so it’s natural for me to turn there when I need to realize my ideas. The fact that many of these musicians are my close friends makes the choice even more natural. The term “jazz” though doesn’t mean anything to me anymore. It’s way too broad to define and that’s good. I think that many different genres of music are melting into one indefinable style with plenty of room for variation and no need to be anything except good and interesting.

This recording of one of Haydn’s greatest masterpieces is not to be missed. A night no one would ever forget was the night Heart performed on VH1’s “Decades Rock Live” back in 2006. The guest list of performers formed a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for itself, including country music star Carrie Underwood, Jane’s Addiction founding member and former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Dave Navarro, country singer-songwriter Gretchen Wilson and Canadian-American singer-songwriter and composer Rufus Wainwright. An exceptional highlight of the show furthermore entails the return of renowned grunge rockers Alice In Chains with Duff McKagan joining his friends on stage!
Each guest artist had the chance to perform up to three songs together with the band. The track list includes gems like Heart’s “Crazy On You”, performed together with Dave Navarro and Alice In Chain’s “Rooster“. A joined performance featuring all of the guest artists of “Barracuda” rounded up this monumental show, which will now finally be released on audio as well as visual formats for the world to enjoy.

Hearts Ann and Nancy Wilson returned to their hometown of Seattle to stage a celebration of the Christmas season, gathering a few of their friends to join them in singing holiday classics, personal favorites and some of their own hits.
Special guests Shawn Colvin, Sammy Hagar, Richard Marx and Pat Monahan from Train joined HEART for this once-in-a-lifetime concert, which was taped on Dec. 12 2013 at the beautiful Benaroya Symphony Concert Hall in Seattle. The Wilson sisters performed an array of holiday songs written by Joni Mitchell, Harry Nilsson, Bob Dylan and Hagar in their Christmas set as well as some of HEART s favorite songs. Colvin, Hagar, Marx and Monahan provided additional vocals on the tunes and/or sing duets with Heart.
Heart and Friends: ‘Home for the Holidays’ ended a prolific and award-winning 2013 for Heart, who have been enjoying a resurgence of popularity since 2010s ‘Red Velvet Car’, which was the group s first Top 10 album in 20 years. Many successful live shows and tours (including a 2011 tour with Def Leppard, and their 2013 Heartbreaker tour) have occurred with 2012 seeing the release of ‘Strange Euphoria’, a definitive career-spanning box set; the arrival of ‘Kicking and Dreaming: A Story of Heart, Soul, and Rock and Roll’, a best-selling autobiography; the announcement of Ann and Nancy Wilsons Heart star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the release of ‘Fanatic’, Hearts 14th studio album.
