Moritz Moszkowski (1854-1925) wrote a considerable quantity of piano music, but it is generally remembered today only for a single piece, Étincelles, which Horowitz enjoyed playing. The early works on this first instalment in Ian Hobson’s survey of Moszkowski’s complete music for solo piano reveal a debt to Mendelssohn and Schumann, but the craftsmanship already justifies a later remark of Paderewski’s: “After Chopin, Moszkowski best understands how to write for the piano, and his writing embraces the whole gamut of piano technique”.

During the first lockdown here in the UK, I found myself awake around 4am most days. I often go to my studio or go for a walk to record bird song at these times to relax and on two occasions I actually recorded these early morning sessions.

Both recordings were done using steel tongue drums with my studio windows open. I mic’ed up the drum in front of the window with a pair of DPA 4060 lavalier microphones hanging from the window close to one of the bird feeding areas in our garden. The sparrows in the nest opposite always come to join me on my window sill when I play the drum or guitar, and the freckles and clicks of sound you can hear in ‘Fractural’ are them landing on or near the microphones.

The additional textures in ‘Textural’ were done using hyrdrophones in the shallow waters while the tide was out at a local beach. The drum elements were edited using looping pedals to create more drone-like tones compared to ‘Fractural’.

One world superstar and four friends who have taken very different directions in life (none decided to “turn pro” as they would say it), are still able to capture the essence of what being a performing band is about. This is Ian Gillan & The Javelins.

This album is what happened during four days of recordings in a studio in Hamburg, Germany, where instruments, microphones, lyrics sheets and memories were the only tools allowed.

This album is not an act of nostalgia, or a celebration of the purity of the old days versus modernity.
This is simply what the Javelins were in 1963… and this is what they are now, if they happen to meet in the studio, embracing their guitars and look at each other with a big smile on their face.

This is where it all started.

Ian Gillan & The Javelins was recorded at the Chameleon Studios during a five days recording session in Hamburg, March 2018, Germany.

Ian Fisher – Idle Hands (2018) [Official Digital Download 24bit/44,1kHz]

Ian Fisher – Idle Hands (2018)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 36:24 minutes | 371 MB | Genre: Country
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Ian Fisher Music

A native of Missouri, Ian Fisher is a true musical phenomenon, as original as he is talented. A singer-songwriter with over a thousand songs to his credit, this autodidact was immersed in his father’s discotheque that was rich in country and folk music. It is logical therefore that he developed a certain love for this 70s music and that it oozes out today in his own compositions. With a degree in political science, the American excels in light and simple songwriting which hides underneath relatively complex ideas. With Idle Hands, he asserts himself in this seventies country-pop (think Fleetwood Mac or Jackson Browne) but also in the new wave of Jason Isbell and Sturgill Simpson. With the singing and rhythmic sections recorded in Berlin, string arrangements that join Fisher’s lyrics and a collaboration with the Danish singer Ida Wenøe for the choirs, this is a delicate and intense mix. Idle Hands sheds light on those who are deprived of love, those who are frustrated, the ones who are left behind to fend for themselves. He opens with a lament entitled Tables Turn. It’s a mix of classical piano and violin themes, contrasted by guitar distortions. Whether we recognize ourselves in his themes or not, he conveys a very human message without painting too gloomy a picture. He ventures into soul pop on Road to Jordan, while slipping into a more retro style with If I Could Buy You and its synth melody. It’s an album that follows perfectly after the folk imprint left by Nero, released in 2016.  – Clara Bismuth

Conductor Antonio Pappano gladly trades in his conductor’s baton for his piano keys in this recording during which he accompanies some of the greatest voices in music today. He plays in perfect complicity with English tenor Ian Bostridge in this exciting program devoted to a selection of Beethoven’s Lieder.

The centrepiece of this album is, of course, An die ferne Geliebte (“To the distant beloved”), which is considered to be the first ever Lieder cycle in the history of music. The six poems depict an unknown woman that the composer had idealised from their very first encounter, quickly followed by their separation. His longing for her caused him so much torment that even the joyous awakening of spring could not take away his melancholy in this heart-rending lover’s lament.

The other twenty or so Lieder on this album, including the famous Adelaide, which was also set to music by Schubert, are a testament to Beethoven’s mastery of the lied and popular songs, which he liked to harmonise. Ian Bostridge and Antonio Pappano interpret these rare gems with sensitivity and sophistication. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Just like Pears and Britten, Ian Bostridge worked with the composer Thomas Adès on this recording of Schubert’s Winterreise, made at a concert at London’s famous Wigmore Hall in 2018. With his unique voice and style, the British singer divides opinion. Love him or hate him, he evokes strong feelings. As we fall into the former camp, we couldn’t recommend this recording strongly enough. It is very different from the studio version recorded some years before for EMI, with the great Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes. Compared to that splendid record, this new version is simpler, almost calmer. Thomas Adès makes use of original manuscripts to build a fine accompaniment, that gives voice to the overwhelming melancholy of the young composer who knows himself to be doomed. Fatal wanderings, seen through a lens of solitude, regret and resignation. The first volume of a trilogy which will eventually bring together Schubert’s great cycles, in live recordings by these same musicians.  – François Hudry

Ian Bostridge continues his new exploration of Schubert song cycles with a recording of Die schöne Müllerin, together with pianist Saskia Giorgini. Die schöne Müllerin (1823) was Schubert’s first song cycle, and simultaneously Bostridge’s first extended introduction to the Lied and all its wonders. Schubert initially conceived the cycle together with poet Wilhelm Müller as a party game among friends, but gradually got captivated by the profundity of this apparently naïve love story. Bostridge is equally fascinated by the way in which this playful, folk-inspired piece gradually transforms into a cosmic lullaby in the final lines of the last song ‘des Baches Wiegenlied’. For pianist Giorgini, the key to – but also the greatest challenge of – interpreting Schubert’s music, and particularly Die schöne Müllerin, lies in the oceanic experience and hypnotic power of repetition.
