‘RAW’ was recorded in connection with the band’s wildly popular and critically lauded 2019 Netflix documentary ‘That Little Ol’ Band From Texas’. The first track released from the album is ‘Brown Sugar’, one of the earlier recordings in the band’s career. The Grammy-nominated feature from Banger Films and director Sam Dunn includes an interlude that finds the group’s classic line up – Billy Gibbons, Frank Beard and the late Dusty Hill – gathering for a very intimate session at Gruene Hall, ‘the oldest continually run dance hall in Texas’ located in New Braunfels, in the heart of Texas hill country. That performance provided the basis for the ‘RAW’ album release.

ZZ Top is one of the more interesting bands in the American rock scene, one that has sold tens of millions of records, and one with an instantly identifiable sound and a perhaps even more instantly identifiable look, but one which may not have penetrated into the mass public consciousness enough that anyone who is not a diehard fan of the band would be able to even name its three members, let alone offer any biographical information about any of them. Fans of course would be able to list off Dusty Hill, Billy F Gibbons and Frank Beard* within seconds, but even some of those selfsame fans might not be able to list much biographical data beyond those names. For anyone in either of those categories (non-fan or fan), ZZ Top: That Little Ol’ Band from Texas may be an agreeable information dump of sorts, giving a glut of datapoints on what the back cover of this release probably correctly states as being “the extraordinary tale of a band whose image we know, but whose story we don’t.”

One of the many talking heads in this piece mentions how ZZ Top’s early music videos created almost an aura of mystery, distancing the trio from the audience in a way, and that in and of itself may help to account for how little seems to be generally known about these guys. This very appealing documentary may not provide a bunch of “early childhood” biography, but it really has some hugely entertaining archival video and reminiscences from all three that get into their early music making activities, as well as their eventual formation and success as ZZ Top. There’s also some touching content given to their longtime manager Bill Ham, who passed away recently. Some of the anecdotes are kind of funny, including their recounting of their own first encounter with MTV, which they initially mistook to be some kind of special, watching for untold hours and wondering when it was finally going to end.

*It’s always struck me as a little funny that Frank Beard is the one without “the beard”.

ZZ Top – The Complete Studio Albums: 1970-1990 (2013) [Official Digital Download 24bit/192kHz]

This ten-album, must-have set includes ZZ Top’s acclaimed albums: ZZ Top’s First Album, Rio Grande Mud, Tres Hombres, Fandango!, Tejas, Deguello, El Loco, Eliminator, Afterburner and Recycler.

This sturdy American blues-rock trio from Texas consists of Billy Gibbons (guitar), Dusty Hill (bass), and Frank Beard (drums). They were formed in 1970 in and around Houston from rival bands the Moving Sidewalks (Gibbons) and American Blues (Hill and Beard). Their first two albums reflected the strong blues roots and Texas humor of the band. Their third album (Tres Hombres) gained them national attention with the hit “La Grange,” a signature riff tune to this day, based on John Lee Hooker’s “Boogie Chillen.” Their success continued unabated throughout the ’70s, culminating with the year-and-a-half-long Worldwide Texas Tour.
Exhausted from the overwhelming workload, they took a three-year break, then switched labels and returned to form with Deguello and El Loco, both harbingers of what was to come. By their next album, Eliminator, and its worldwide smash follow-up, Afterburner, they had successfully harnessed the potential of synthesizers to their patented grungy blues groove, giving their material a more contemporary edge while retaining their patented Texas style. Now sporting long beards, golf hats, and boiler suits, they met the emerging video age head-on, reducing their “message” to simple iconography. Becoming even more popular in the long run, they moved with the times while simultaneously bucking every trend that crossed their path. As genuine roots musicians, they have few peers; Gibbons is one of America’s finest blues guitarists working in the arena rock idiom — both influenced by the originators of the form and British blues-rock guitarists like Peter Green — while Hill and Beard provide the ultimate rhythm section support…
