In memory of Dave Brubeck (December 6, 1920 – December 5, 2012)

Dave Brubeck’s defining masterpiece, Time Out is one of the most rhythmically innovative albums in jazz history, the first to consciously explore time signatures outside of the standard 4/4 beat or 3/4 waltz time. It was a risky move — Brubeck’s record company wasn’t keen on releasing such an arty project, and many critics initially roasted him for tampering with jazz’s rhythmic foundation. But for once, public taste was more advanced than that of the critics. Buoyed by a hit single in altoist Paul Desmond’s ubiquitous “Take Five,” Time Out became an unexpectedly huge success, and still ranks as one of the most popular jazz albums ever. That’s a testament to Brubeck and Desmond’s abilities as composers, because Time Out is full of challenges both subtle and overt — it’s just that they’re not jarring. Brubeck’s classic “Blue Rondo à la Turk” blends jazz with classical form and Turkish folk rhythms, while “Take Five,” despite its overexposure, really is a masterpiece; listen to how well Desmond’s solo phrasing fits the 5/4 meter, and how much Joe Morello’s drum solo bends time without getting lost. The other selections are richly melodic as well, and even when the meters are even, the group sets up shifting polyrhythmic counterpoints that nod to African and Eastern musics. Some have come to disdain Time Out as its become increasingly synonymous with upscale coffeehouse ambience, but as someone once said of Shakespeare, it’s really very good in spite of the people who like it. It doesn’t just sound sophisticated — it really is sophisticated music, which lends itself to cerebral appreciation, yet never stops swinging. Countless other musicians built on its pioneering experiments, yet it’s amazingly accessible for all its advanced thinking, a rare feat in any art form. This belongs in even the most rudimentary jazz collection.

The Dave Brubeck Quartet – Dave Digs Disney (1957) [Japanese Reissue 2000] SACD ISO + Hi-Res FLAC

This reissue contains the original LP of the same name plus two previously unissued songs (“Very Good Advice” and “So This Is Love”). Inspired by a trip with his family to Disneyland, Dave Brubeck recorded eight songs taken from four Disney movies (Alice in Wonderland, Pinocchio, Snow White and Cinderella), including such melodies as “Give a Little Whistle,” “Heigh Ho,” “When You Wish Upon a Star” and “Someday My Prince Will Come.” The funny part is that all of these songs were already in the Brubeck Quartet’s repertoire. The results are pleasing although, due to a misprint, the booklet only contains half of the original liner notes.

In 1982 pianist Dave Brubeck welcomed clarinetist Bill Smith (who he had played with back in his octet days in the late ’40s) as a permanent member of his Quartet along with drummer Randy Jones and Chris Brubeck on electric bass and occasional bass trombone. This album features the new Quartet at the Concord Jazz Festival playing what would become their typical mixture of songs: three Brubeck compositions (“Benjamin,” “Koto Song” and “Softly, William, Softly”), a standard (“Black and Blue”) and yet another remake of “Take Five.” These are fine performances.

Time Out is the groundbreaking double-Platinum jazz classic by The Dave Brubeck Quartet. This pivotal outing is widely declared Dave Brubeck’s defining masterpiece and is one of the most innovative jazz albums of all time. It began as a musical experiment showcasing the quartet performing seven original jazz compositions, each in a different time signature and includes the massive hit “Take Five.” It soon became an iconic crossover, spending 164 weeks on the charts. In 2005, Time Out was inducted into the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry and the GRAMMY Hall of Fame. It is the first jazz album to earn a Platinum certification.

From the very first note of ‘Blue Rondo’, it was clear that this superlative example of a high-res download is destined to convert disbelievers. By the time they hear the piano on ‘Kathy’s Waltz’, they’ll be hooked. Ken Kessler, Hi-Fi News & Record Review

“Newport 1958” is a live album by pianist Dave Brubeck and his quartet recorded at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival in Rhode Island of music by and associated with Duke Ellington. Several of the tracks were later re-recorded in New York City due to sound problems with the live Newport recordings.

These performances by the Dave Brubeck quartet recorded in 1958 during the opening night of Newport’s Jazz Festival, are an impressive tribute to Duke’s music, and among the very best of the Brubeck quartet offerings. His undeniably individualistic piano is strong, assertive and imaginative, while Paul Desmond is eloquence personified, his playing full of the subtlety and taste for which he was rightly celebrated, everywhere lyrical, beautifully conceived, liquid in tone, and utterly relaxed in execution. Joe Morello’s impeccable taste and invention in support and as a soloist underlines how valuable he was to the Brubeck quartet. And, with Joe Benjamin, he is part of a thoroughly relaxed rhythm section.

With the popularization of bossa nova in the early ’60s, practically every recording artist had to have at least one bossa nova album. This effort by the Dave Brubeck Quartet is better than most due to the high quality of the compositions, of which the title cut is best-known. The date’s two standards (“This Can’t Be Love” and “Trolley Song”) also fare well on this upbeat session.

Brubeck Time is a jazz album by The Dave Brubeck Quartet, a rare studio recording from that period of the band, when it was recording mostly live albums. It was recorded in the fall of 1954, and originally released in 1955 under the Columbia label as CL 622. In 1968, Columbia re-channeled the album for stereo and re-released it as Instant Brubeck under the Harmony label as HS 11253. It was later re-released again on CD in 1991 under the title Interchanges ’54 as CK 47032, with the addition of four tracks from Jazz: Red Hot and Cool.

Brubeck in Amsterdam is a 1962 live album by Dave Brubeck and his quartet recorded on 3 December at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, though unreleased until 1969.

A live gem from the classic Dave Brubeck Quartet – and a great reminder that the group could almost be even more exciting in a concert setting than on their studio albums! The date is 1962, and the combo is in perfect form – sublime alto from Paul Desmond, and always-inventive rhythms from Joe Morello on drums and Eugene Wright on bass – fused perfectly with Dave’s piano, but also very open and spontaneous here – with this extra sort of crackle that makes us know that although working at the level of perfection, these guys are still just mere mortals too! The set features a 12 minute take on “Brandenburg Gate” with a solo by Desmond that’s simply stunning – and other cuts include “Since Love Had Its Way”, “King For A Day”, “Good Reviews”, and “Cultural Exchange”.
