Mozart was a master at capturing the spirits of the instruments for which he wrote, perfectly exemplified here in the lighter-than-air Flute Concerto No. 2, the sprightly and playful Bassoon Concerto and in the interplay of the four soloists in the Sinfonia concertante. These three exceptional works come to life in this studio recording with soloists of the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Principal conductor Vladimir Jurowski.

London Philharmonic Orchestra & Paavo Berglund – Sibelius: Symphonies Nos. 5 & 6 (2019) [Official Digital Download 24bit/48kHz]

Finnish conductor Paavo Berglund, who passed away in January 2012, was one of the last remaining conductors with a direct personal connection to Sibelius. With the Second and Seventh Symphonies already released on the LPO Label, Berglund’s Sibelius legacy is further cemented in these live concert recordings with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, in which he vividly captures the natural flight of the Fifth Symphony and the freefall journey of the Sixth.

The affinity Berglund felt with the music of Jean Sibelius went beyond shared nationality and personal acquaintance. Berglund revealed a rare physicality in Sibelius’s scores. It was there in his three recorded symphony cycles, but in these late London performances it emerged in a different, darker light. Berglund wasn’t as meticulous about observing marked tempi as some of his younger compatriots are. Instead he was impulsive, rugged and heartfelt. But his instincts always seemed to serve the musical architecture, the curious symphonic meta-flow unique to Sibelius. His death in January 2012 was talked of as a goodbye to one of the last conductors of the ‘old school’.

London Philharmonic Orchestra, Nick Palmer – Rosner: Orchestral Music, Vol. 3 (2019) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

The musical language of the New York-based Arnold Rosner (19452013) had its roots in the modal harmony and rhythm of pre-Baroque polyphony and evolved in an array of unusual directions, producing a style that is instantly recognizable and immediately appealing as can be heard in the three works on this recording. Rosners Nocturne suggests the immensity and the implacable violence of outer space, whereas his overture Tempus Perfectum has its starting point in Renaissance dance. The monumental Sixth Symphony opens with music of volcanic ferocity and vehemence; the central Adagio then provides an island of troubled calm before the dignified opening of the finale presages a symphonic Allegro of wild, freewheeling energy; only when its immense force is spent does this powerful masterpiece sink to an uneasy close.

Bellini’s fourth opera, La Straniera, marked out the composer as one of the leading figures of the post-Rossini generation. Indeed, he then went on to receive a commission for I Capuleti e I Montecchi that far surpassed the record amount received by Rossini for his final Italian score.

Straniera is one of the pieces that most defines Bellini status as the instigator of a revolution in vocal technique in Italian opera. Gone are the incessant fioriture, the unmotivated decorations and the generation of excitement by unsubtle means; instead, the composer spins out long lines and focuses on the lyric element as the main tool of expression. Risible though the plot is at times, this vocal technique allows Bellini to render the main character a woman of extreme nobility and dignity.

Vladimir Martynov’s Utopia Symphony is a musical tribute to Singapore from a son of the Russian avant-garde of the 1970s. Martynov skillfully combines influences from American minimalism and Russian Orthodox chant with a libretto inspired by the ancient text of the Tao Te Ching to create a sound world which seeks to reimagine the concept of utopia. This world premiere recording was made at London’s Abbey Road Studios, under the baton of Vladimir Jurowski.

Hermann Scherchen was a figure of central importance in twentieth-century musical life, his continuing espousal of new music making him one of its foremost proponents in Europe. As a conductor he held a deep respect for the composer’s written text, for instance seeking to perform Beethoven’s symphonies at the tempi indicated in the manuscripts, an unusual practice for the time. Technically he believed that a conductor should commence work with an orchestra only when every aspect of a score had been completely memorised, and could be rehearsed from memory. Film of Scherchen conducting shows him to have possessed a very simple and clear beat. Yet he could summon up performances of raw power as well as of great character. He saw the conductor’s job very much as animating the music beyond the notes, writing in 1935, ‘A music devoid of any emotion, of any aesthetic pleasure or spiritual clarification may be of interest to the professional, but has no meaning whatsoever to the normal listener.’

On this classic record, he conducts Mahler’s mounmental 1st and 10th Symphonies at the head of the London Philharmonic Orchestra!

The reputation of George Butterworth, whose life was tragically cut short in WWI, rests on a handful of works including the orchestral pieces on this recording. Philip Heseltine (Peter Warlock) left just three orchestral works, including An Old Song. Hadley’s One Morning in Spring was written for his teacher Vaughan Williams. Herbert Howells’s early orchestral and chamber works have ravishing pastoral beauty.
