Many of us may have set goals for the new year, but harmonia mundi set theirs particularly high. The independent record label intends on killing two birds with one stone by launching an extensive Beethoven edition that spans from 2020 (one hundred and fifty years since his birth) to 2027 (the bicentenary of his death), in a series of new recordings by new musicians under the label. For years to come, this non-exhaustive edition will be a reflection of the interpretative trends from the 21st century. This first volume of the Complete Piano Concertos on period instruments (there will be another on modern instruments) brings together the two extremes of Beethoven’s repertoire, namely Concertos No. 2 and No. 5, the former of which was composed first.

It’s springtime in old Russia, and as the fair-goers jostle and laugh, a puppeteer retells a tale of love, jealousy … and murder. Don’t worry, though: they’re only puppets. Aren’t they? There’s more to music than meets the ear, even when it’s as playful as Stravinsky’s riotous ballet, or as passionate as Bartók’s paprika-flavoured Second Violin Concerto. And especially when – like Samy Moussa’s Crimson – it’s creating wondrous new sounds, straight out of thin air.

Inbal Segev, London Philharmonic Orchestra & Marin Alsop – Anna Clyne: DANCE – Edward Elgar: Cello Concerto (2020) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

This formidable release features Inbal Segev performing Elgars emotive Cello Concerto coupled with DANCE, an inspiring new work by Grammy-nominated English composer Anna Clyne that was commissioned by Inbal. On this powerful recording, Marin Alsop conducts the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Marin introduced Inbal to Anna, sparking a special synergy between the three women. While Anna was composing DANCE, a five-movement concerto inspired by the 13th-century Persian poet Rumi, further connections ensued. Annas soulful and vibrant music combines cultures that include her Irish-English family, Polish-Jewish ancestry and Inbals Israeli-American heritage. Inbal expounds, Annas music has an old-soul sensibility but is fresh and modern at the same time. This juxtaposition of old and new has always appealed to me; it suits my playing, as well as the tone of my 1673 Ruggieri cello. Inbals idea to record Anna Clynes DANCE alongside Elgars Cello Concerto is timely: the two works were composed exactly 100 years apart. Inbal enthuses, It is so rewarding to record and perform the work of a contemporary female composer whose music withstands comparison with Elgars. The two pieces share a certain sensibility a romanticism, warmth and humanity that transcends any stylistic differences. Elgars Cello Concerto, written in the wake of World War I, is deeply reflective. Anna Clynes DANCE is optimistic and forward-looking. Inbals recording of these two cello concertos is timeless.

Eugen Jochum made two complete recordings of the symphonies of Johannes Brahms, one with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in the mid-1950s, the other with the London Philharmonic in 1976. On the strengths of these sets, the conductor Kenneth Woods called him “the greatest Brahms conductor who ever lived”. These Jochum performances of Brahms’ 4 symphonies, together with the Academic Festival & Tragic overtures, are vintage 1970s Kingsway Hall recordings. Eugen Jochum, steeped in the Germanic tradition, knows exactly how he wants these symphonies to sound & the London Philharmonic Orchestra rise to the occasion with playing they have probably never bettered, with producer Christopher Bishop giving them a sound to match.

Antonín Dvorák had about as much luck with the dedicatee of his violin concerto, the great Joseph Joachim, as Tchaikovsky had with his, the no less illustrious Leopold Auer. Although Joachim agreed to do a critical analysis of the first draft — resulting in a radical reworking of the piece – he did not give the premiere of the finished article, that privilege instead falling to the young Czech violinist František Ondrícek (1857–1922), in Prague on 14 October 1883. Acclaimed from the outset by both performers and audiences, the work soon took a place of honour among the great Romantic concertos, if without achieving quite the same level of celebrity as the Brahms or the Tchaikovsky. That said, there are today more than fifty official recordings available: before Perlman, all the stars of the violin world, with the exception of Heifetz, who never recorded it, had left their stamp on it. Yehudi Menuhin recorded the concerto as early as 1936, and was followed by Georg Kulenkampff (1941), Váša Príhoda (1943), David Oistrakh (1949), Nathan Milstein (who became the work’s champion, with three versions, in 1951, 1957 and 1966), Johanna Martzy (1953) and Isaac Stern (1965). This performance by Perlman, on one of his earliest albums, revealed the depth of his affection for Dvorˇák’s music — he would go on to record the Sonatina and Four Romantic Pieces as well (see volume 36). His choice to couple the Concerto with the delightful Romance in F minor underlines his particular fondness for the latter, a work he had already recorded for RCA in 1967, and which he would return to again years later, this time for Sony in 1993. The Romance is Dvorák’s 1877 violin arrangement of the slow movement of his String Quartet, Op.9, later published as his Op.11. Brimming with gentle languor and delicate charm, the arrangement works perfectly for the discreetly sentimental Romantic solo instrument. While there is also a version with piano accompaniment, it is more frequently recorded with orchestra, and the versions set down by Josef Suk (1960) and Isaac Stern (1966) in this form probably inspired the young Itzhak Perlman to follow suit. ~~Jean-Michel Molkhou

“The Bach Violin Concertos are not only one of the Baroque period highlights, but are one of the foundations of the entire history of music”, writes Swedish violinist Christian Svarfvar on his new album of “Bach Re:Composed” by fellow Swede Johan Ullén. “It’s a whole world of beauty in sixty minutes. Then you may ask yourself: why recompose something that is already so perfect?”. The result is this brilliant album of re-composed Bach concertos, with a fearless and technically challenging stratospheric solo violin part contrasting with enriched cellos and basses. For those who loved Max Richter’s “Four Seasons”, “Infinite Bach” will be a wonderful discovery for them. Bach was forward looking and his influence has travelled the centuries, influencing jazz, rock and pop musicians as well as every classical composer who came after him.
