He was one of the most important virtuosos in the world, and his ingenuity is still undisputed – well over twenty years after his death – as are the standards he set with many of his recordings. Claudio Arrau, who was treated like a god, when it came to his Beethoven interpretations, was able to trace his musical line back to Beethoven. Martin Krause, his teacher at Stern’s Conservatory in Berlin, was a master student of Liszt; his teacher Carl Czerny was so highly favored by Beethoven that he entrusted his brilliant piano student with playing the solo part at the first Vienna performance of his piano concerto No. 5.

The Chilean pianist Arrau, born on February 06, 1903 in Chillán, attracted attention at the age of five with a recital in Santiago – a concert that co-founded his reputation as a child prodigy. After studying with Paoli for two years, the Chilean government sent him with financial support to the Stern Conservatory in Berlin, where he had already performed once as an eleven-year-old. His only teacher here was Martin Krause, the last Liszt student still alive at that time and of decisive importance for Arrau’s musical style.

Though he didn’t record Chopin intensely throughout his Warner career, Claudio Arrau had close affinities with the Polish composer. He performed an étude in the program of the very first recital he gave at the age of only five, and he was the first composer he put on record in 1921. Here is a beautiful remastered version of the complete Etudes, Op. 25, with the rare Allegro de concert.

Claudio Arrau was the youngest of three children of the married couple Don Carlos and Lucretia Leon de Arrau. His mother, who was 43 years old when he was born, gave piano lessons. His father, who worked as an ophthalmologist in Chillán, died in a riding accident when his son Claudio was one year old.

Claudio Arrau (1903-1991) is a pianist fully deserving of the epithet ‘legendary’. His rigorous intellect and sense of the sublime found expression in his transcendent technique and sumptuous, yet lucid sonorities. The recordings in this 24CD collection, a significant portion of Arrau’s legacy from the years between 1921 and 1962, are indispensable to his extensive discography. They can now be heard in their full glory, thanks to a process of restoration and HD remastering using the original tapes (for recordings from the LP era) or the best available source (for 78s). Among them are four world premiere releases: Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 30, op. 109, a Chopin étude, and two pieces by Liszt.

The complete Warner recordings by Claudio Arrau, newly remastered in high resolution and including various premieres, have been released both in physical and digital formats! One of the greatest figures of the 20th-century, Arrau excelled particularly in the great romantic repertoire, and notably Beethoven whom he performed intensely on record, but also on stage (sometimes playing the complete sonatas in a row during legendary concert series).

Warner now issues the 1957 recordings of the last sonatas, including a previously unreleased version of the thirtieth sonata!
