The original idea for Rainmaker was to throw a party in a Paris recording studio in honor of my 80th birthday. I saw it as a way to celebrate the survival of so many things, including myself, a life without borders, and my friendship with so many musicians abroad.

I imagined that it would be a blues record, so I began by writing some original blues songs and revisiting some of my favorite classic blues too. But as often happens, what we discover is not necessarily what we were looking for, and in this case I found myself writing songs that felt dystopian, not all of them traditional blues forms, and not what you might imagine as “party music”.

But by the time we finished recording at Studio de Meudon with new and old friends from America and France, the record had found its own sound. Somewhere between tragic and celebratory, shaggy and polished, broken and healed, I guess you could say that Rainmaker really is all about surviving in the modern world.

In the intro, Ben talks about Dylan.According to it, Dylan is on screen, and Ben Sidran himself is projected.Dylan is a vehicle.

That’s right, even if you play Dylan’s song (only the last 1 is different), the performance is full of enthusiasm with Ben Sidran’s masculinity coming to the fore.4 people (guitar & vocals, trumpet, bass, drums) support Ben’s vocals and piano.

Most of the songs are from Dylan Different, but I’m happy with the addition of the classic songs “Times Change” and “Love Minus Zero” (instead, Doors to Heaven, Highway 61 of Remembrance, no skinny ballads).Not only is the unique arrangement of these songs interesting, but the songs on Dylan Different are also subtly seasoned, and this live record is a masterpiece of recent Dylan cover albums.

There’s an expression “older but wiser.” I don’t know I’m any wiser but I definitely am older. And that’s the good news. There are advantages to being the Old Guy. Especially now. A developed sense of humor and a deeper historical vision come to mind.

Swing State is my first all instrumental record. I’ve done instrumentals before but this is my first piano trio project. My favorite records when I was a kid were the trios of Horace Silver, Bobby Timmons, Bud Powell, and later Sonny Clark. The piano trio format was what first excited me. So circling back sixty-some years later I wanted to feel like those musicians felt when they played. I know I can’t play like them, but I can feel like them. That’s what Swing State is.
