Each appearance of Atsushi Sakai and Christophe Rousset leaves an unforgettable memory with those who have had the good fortune to hear them commune on stage. Long-standing partners, they now join together for the first time on disc for a composer they worship: the mysterious Antoine Forqueray. Born in 1672 in Paris, he was, with Marin Marais, one of the greatest gambists of all time. Famed for his virtuosic improvisations, he published none of his 300-odd pieces and died in 1745 in Mantes where he had moved in 1731, after having suffered serious financial setbacks, especially in the course of Law’s bankruptcy. Aside from a few handwritten pieces copied in the collections of other composers, Forqueray’s pieces have been lost.

The release of the Pièces de viole, to which the present recording is devoted, is thus the sole important testimony to his oeuvre.

No, Anne Pacéo is not a “jazz drummer” like the others. Nothing surprising then that her fourth album is also … different? With Circles, stylistic borders fade, received ideas crumble and creativity turbines at full throttle! Between songs and instrumental thrusts, telluric rhythms and libertarian breaths, these Circles unfold an organic groove, poetic and inspired. New Order – Singles (2005/2016)

Singles is a greatest hits album by English rock band New Order. It was released on 3 October 2005 by London Records. The two-disc compilation includes the band’s singles released between 1981 and 2005. Unlike the CD version of earlier singles compilation Substance 1987, the B-sides are not included. While Substance 1987 aimed to showcase New Order’s 12-inch singles, Singles instead features mostly seven-inch versions, some of which are rare and differ from the album versions.

The album includes three early singles that have never appeared on CD in their original form: “Ceremony”, “Everything’s Gone Green” and “Temptation”. Additionally, an edit of the “Rough mix” of the song “Confusion” was created exclusively for this compilation. One song, “Turn”, was released on this album in a new edited form, despite never being a single.

An updated edition of Singles was released on 9 September 2016, which adds “I’ll Stay with You” from the 2013 album Lost Sirens and replaces the versions of “1963”, “Run 2”, “Bizarre Love Triangle”, “True Faith”, “Spooky”, “Confusion”, and “The Perfect Kiss”. The reissue was remastered by Frank Arkwright,[5] and fixes the compression issues prevalent on the 2005 version…

When EMI first released Andre Previn’s recording of The Planets on LP back in 1973, it became an instant favorite of mine. Not only did I find the performance as good or better than anyone else’s, I thought the sound was of reference quality. As of this writing it’s around forty years later, and my opinion hasn’t changed. I still use the “Uranus” movement as an audio standard for judging other recordings and stereo equipment. I first owned the English EMI LP pressing, vastly preferring it to the American Angel pressing; then there was the EMI compact disc, which wasn’t quite as open or solid as the LP; and later the EMI Japan mastering, which improved upon the English product.

With great likelihood – at least as far as it can be said almost 300 years later – these twelve duos for violin and cello without accompanying continuo of 1734 are the earliest works with this instrumentation in which the violin and cello parts enjoy equal rights. The fact that Zani is largely forgotten today is probably due to the circumstance that his music has mainly been preserved in handwritten form and has hardly been accessible through recordings. Recently, the cello concertos (Capriccio CD C5145) and a few violin concertos have been re-discovered, but a large number of other treasures are still slumbering in different monastery and palace libraries throughout Europe. In these duos, we can experience the minimal form of chamber music with the maximal entertainment value. Andrea Zani is a composer whose name is worth noting and from whom it is to be hoped that many more treasures can be recovered.

The music of Souvenance, by turns graceful, hypnotic, austere, and starkly dramatic, follows Tunisian oud-master Anouar Brahem’s last ECM album, The Astounding Eyes of Rita after a five-year gap. “It took a long time to write this music,” he acknowledges. Early plans to document the progress of the “Rita” quartet, which had grown to become a compellingly dynamic group in concert, were set aside. “I was feeling a need to attempt something new.” Then, at the end of 2010 and the beginning of 2011, came the great political upheavals – accompanied by “immense fears, joys and hopes” – which began in Tunisia and swept like wildfire through the region. Fully absorbed by daily news of popular uprisings, collapsing dictatorships, insurgencies and counter-insurgencies, Brahem found his emotional world “monopolized by the political”. It was not the right moment to be writing music: “I had to wait for the pressure to fall, before I could resume work”.
