“With the single exception of Kind of Blue, Sonny Clark’s Cool Struttin’ is almost certainly the coolest jazz album of all time.” –100 Greatest Jazz Albums

Cool Struttin’ features a constellation of jazz greats: Jackie McLean on alto sax, Art Farmer on trumpet, and two members of Miles Davis’ Quintet (Philly Joe Jones on drums and Paul Chambers on bass). While Kind of Blue focused on modal jazz, Cool Struttin’ takes its soul from the heart of the blues. (more…)

The Metropolitan Opera give this live performance of Rossini’s work based on the poem by Sir Walter Scott. Michele Mariotti conducts the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and Chorus with Joyce DiDonato as Elena, the lady of the lake, who loves the heroic Malcolm (Daniela Barcellona). However, King James V (Juan Diego Flórez) arrives in the Highlands and sets his sights on Elena while her father Douglas (Oren Gradus), who is rebelling against the King’s rule, promises his daughter to clan chief Rodrigo (John Osborn).

Joyce DiDonato can do almost anything. She can sing high and low, loud and soft, and somehow make it all seem natural. She can manage florid runs and agitated climaxes as if they were expressive devices, not just vocal pyrotechnics. She can look sweetly demure, fondling flowers, or awesomely heroic, confronting royalty. She can make a simple gown look elegant, and a small gesture look big. Most important, she can reinforce such achievements with a mezzo-soprano — maybe a soprano sfogato — equally notable for richness and purity. – Martin Bernheimer, Wall Street Journal Joyce DiDonato is the world’s greatest living mezzo-soprano, thrilling audiences with, and garnering universal critical acclaim for, her expression, stagecraft, and flawless technique. The reception of her performances in the Paul Curran production of Rossini’s La Donna del Lago for the Metropolitan Opera were no exception, and this DVD and Bluray release, whose stellar cast includes Juan Diego Florez, John Osborn and Daniela Barcellona, cements this as a signature role for DiDonato. Richard Strauss’s last stage work is an opera about opera as an art form, depicting the creation of a music drama in a wise and witty way. Which came first – words or music? That is the question that Strauss and his librettist Clemens Krauss address through the story of a Countess torn between a composer and a poet. “Renée Fleming is a world-class Countess, moving and intense … All around her there is luxury casting: Bo Skovhus as the Count, Michael Schade as Flamand, Markus Eiche as Olivier, Kurt Rydl as the theatre director La Roche, the wonderful Angelika Kirchschlager as Clairon – all strike exactly the right note, as do the singers in the smaller roles, turning this Capriccio into an event of the first importance.” –Der Kurier, Vienna (more…)

Filmed live in Baden-Baden by the veteran director Brian Large, Renée Fleming makes her debut in the role of Ariadne together with fellow key Strauss interpreters Sophie Koch and Christian Thielemann, following on from their Rosenkavalier triumph. Thielemann conducts the Staatskapelle Dresden, the orchestra to whom Strauss dedicated his Alpine Symphony and which premiered Feuersnot, Salome, Elektra, Der Rosenkavalier and Daphne. Fleming’s voice might have been made for Ariadne and she achieved a great personal triumph in this production: “The chief glory of the evening was hearing Renée Fleming, the Straussian soprano par excellence, making her role debut as Ariadne… As the possessor of what is, possibly, the most beautiful soprano voice in the world, she put her vocal treasures in the service of an empathic, nuanced interpretation of the role. From the creamy top, through a rich, warm middle, to the bewitching, darker colours of her lower register, Fleming poured her magnificent sound into Strauss’s enchanting melodic arcs, animating the sadness, vulnerability, and desire of the bereft princess…” –Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (more…)

Despite the success of Bad, it was hard not to view it as a bit of a letdown, since it presented a cleaner, colder, calculated version of Thriller — something that delivered what it should on the surface, but wound up offering less in the long run. So, it was time for a change-up, something even a superstar as huge as Michael Jackson realized, so he left Quincy Jones behind, hired Guy mastermind Teddy Riley as the main producer, and worked with a variety of other producers, arrangers, and writers, most notably Bruce Swedien and Bill Bottrell. The end result of this is a much sharper, harder, riskier album than Bad, one that has its eyes on the street, even if its heart gets middle-class soft on “Heal the World.” The shift in direction and change of collaborators has liberated Jackson, and he’s written a set of songs that is considerably stronger than Bad, often approaching the consistency of Off the Wall and Thriller. If it is hardly as effervescent or joyous as either of those records, chalk it up to his suffocating stardom, which results in a set of songs without much real emotional center, either in their substance or performance. But, there’s a lot to be said for professional craftsmanship at its peak, and Dangerous has plenty of that, not just on such fine singles as “In the Closet,” “Remember the Time,” or the blistering “Jam,” but on album tracks like “Why You Wanna Trip on Me.” No, it’s not perfect — it has a terrible cover, a couple of slow spots, and suffers from CD-era ailments of the early ’90s, such as its overly long running time and its deadening Q Sound production, which sounds like somebody forgot to take the Surround Sound button off. Even so, Dangerous captures Jackson at a near-peak, delivering an album that would have ruled the pop charts surely and smoothly if it had arrived just a year earlier. But it didn’t — it arrived along with grunge, which changed the rules of the game nearly as much as Thriller itself. Consequently, it’s the rare multi-platinum, number one album that qualifies as a nearly forgotten, underappreciated record. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine (more…)

Named among Yahoo Music’s Top 10 Bands to Watch in 2017, The Accidentals new album, ODYSSEY, affirms the band’s place among contemporary music’s most original and adventurous new bands. Multi-instrumentalists Sav Buist and Katie Larson joined on stage and in the studio by drummer Michael Dause have crafted a genre all their own, fueled by their uniquely limitless approach to musicality and songcraft. Lyrically powerful songs like Earthbound and the potent title track see the band embracing their choice to lead an unconventional life with all its many surprising twists and turns.

The Accidentals adventure began in their hometown of Traverse City, MI, when Larson, a sophomore cellist, and Buist, a junior violinist, were paired for a high school orchestra event. The gifted young musicians became fast friends and before long, bandmates. Having both grown up in musical families with professional pianists for fathers and vocalists for mothers, their shared influences bounced between classical, jazz, bluegrass, country, alt-rock, and the obscure.

Co-produced by Buist, Larson, and Dause with engineer Jason Lehning (Mat Kearney, Guster, George Jones, Alison Krauss), ODYSSEY sees The Accidentals joined by such friends and fans as acoustic guitar maestra Kaki King, bassist and fellow Michigander Dominic John Davis (Jack White, Beck), Carbon Leaf guitarist Carter Gravatt, Keller Williams and The Decemberists Jenny Conlee, who spent three days in the studio alongside the band, lending her distinctive organ to a number of the album’s key tracks.

With great result opera director and acting director of the Salzburg Festival Sven-Erich Bechtholf at the Salzburg Festival in 2012 staged an enriched with elements of theater, comedy and dance original version of Richard Strauss’s opera Ariadne auf Naxos. The premiere was hailed as a highlight of the festival, which was also due to the outstanding musical performance of all parties involved: the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and outstanding soloists shone under the baton of Daniel Harding. Jonas Kaufman gave a highly acclaimed debut as Bacchus and the other soloists were studded cast that includes Emily Magee (Ariadne), Elena Mosuc (Zerbinetta), Peter Mati (Steward), Cornelius Obonya (Monsieur Jourdain), Roberto Saccà, Regina Fritsch and Stefanie Dvorak.

Ariadne auf Naxos was the third collaboration by Richard Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal, written directly after the great success of Der Rosenkavalier. Originally planned as a “divertissement with a small chamber orchestra”, the project expanded into a grand venture combining opera, drama and ballet – and was a flop at its world premiere in 1912. Now the Salzburg Festival pledges to fulfill “the still-wonderful dream of its creators: to bring together the different genres of theater, ballet, drama, music and singing.” Sven-Eric Bechtolf will direct this unconventional production, and has not only adapted Molière’s play Le Bourgeois gentilhomme, which preceded the opera at the time, but has also reinstated the ballet music written for it subsequently. “A hundred years have passed since Hofmannsthal began to work on this tale with the fiercely practical and dramaturgically highly talented Strauss, one hundred years since the disastrous world premiere of Ariadne auf Naxos. We take this ‘anniversary’ as an opportunity to revisit the original version. And where would this make more sense than in Salzburg?”
