Following the release of Franz Reizenstein’s Cello Concerto, it is now our pleasure to present to you his Piano Concerto No. 2. Like Berthold Goldschmidt, Reizenstein fled from Berlin to England in 1934, before the immigration laws had been tightened. Generally speaking, Hindemith’s influence dominates in Reizenstein, though his effusive energy producing highly spirited and less sober results clearly distinguishes him from British and American composers like Rawsthorne and Berkeley. Reizenstein himself performed the solo part at the premiere of his Piano Concerto by the BBC Orchestra under Rudolf Schwarz in 1961. What stands out in this concerto is its exuberant virtuosity, which produces brilliant interplay between the soloist and the orchestra. Reizenstein’s Serenade in F numbers among the works adhering more closely to the “New Objectivity” emanating from Germany than to colorful impressionism. The last work heard here is the Cyrano de Bergerac concert overture – a powerful, energetic work and the symphonic portrait of an extremely popular stage figure working with a surprisingly modest orchestral ensemble. Here the composer in no way overlooks Cyrano’s more romantic moments.

Brahms composed the first of his three Piano Trios aged 21, then pruned and recomposed it in his late 50s. The Oliver Schnyder Trio’s new Brahms set is different from most in that they include both versions. Indeed, they are ardent advocates for the earlier one, which bursts with youthful vigour but sprawls under the weight of its own ideas, and is by some way the longest work on the recording. The only sleeve note is a letter from Oliver Schnyder addressed to Brahms in which he castigates the composer for what he sees as a lack of self-belief.

The main mission of The Oliver Schnyder Trio (Andreas Janke, violin, Oliver Schnyder, piano, and Benjamin Nyffenegger, cello) is to celebrate classical works written for trio and commission new compositions. Their first grand opus is this timeless recording of Beethoven’s works for piano trio in a special 3CD set. The music of Ludwig van Beethoven is revolutionary and reaches far beyond the time of writing. Beethoven was unique, but at the same time, offered a central point of departure for new traditions of composition. The Oliver Schnyder Trio made their debut at the Zurich Tonhalle in 2012. Their recording of Schubert’s Piano Trios was hailed as “a new benchmark recording” by the magazine Die Bühne and was chosen as Switzerland’s Best Classical Album of the Year by the Aargauer Zeitung.

Posterity remembers Oliver Nelson (1932-1975) primarily as an arranger/conductor. When he first began to attract attention with a series of albums for Prestige and its subsidiaries, however, Nelson was hailed as a versatile leader of small groups and a composer/instrumentalist who could refresh the music’s traditional verities while also looking ahead. There is no better showcase for these skills among his initial sessions than Screamin’ the Blues, a rousing set of funky modernism interpreted by a sextet of players who shared Nelson’s allegiance to both virtuosity and vision. The pairing of saxophonist Eric Dolphy with Nelson was particularly inspired as both men were adept on more than one instrument, and allowed this sextet to create an uncommon diversity of colors. Nelson and Dolphy would reunite a year later on both the classic Blues and the Abstract Truth and (with the band heard here minus trumpeter Richard Williams) on the looser yet intense Straight Ahead.

Blues And The Abstract Truth is Oliver Nelson’s triumph. Featuring his all-time classic “Stolen Moments”, Nelson assembled one of the most potent modern jazz sextets ever. Lead trumpeter Freddie Hubbard is at his peak of performance, while alto saxophonists Nelson and Eric Dolphy (Nelson doubling on tenor) team to form an unlikely union that was simmered to perfection. Bill Evans (piano), Paul Chambers (bass) and Roy Haynes (drums) can do no wrong as a rhythm section.

debut with this EMI disc Romance de Amor. The program consists of the usual classical guitar bonbons mixed in with popular numbers mixed in — the tango “La Cumparsita” and the Beatles’ “Michelle” and Paul Simon’s version of “El Condor Pasa” for example, and a couple of traditional Chinese songs, as well. The program, in and of itself, is not that interesting, but it doesn’t matter. Xue Fei Yang is an incredible guitarist — technically top drawer, warmly expressive in sound, and mind-bogglingly facile in her digital dexterity. Just listen to the attack on Rodrigo’s Zapateado; she is able to vary her touch on the strings with lightning speed and pinpoint accuracy.

The French word ‘suite’ was quickly adopted throughout the European continent. The primary meaning (‘set, sequence’) has been preserved in widely diverse contexts – in ceremonial or court vocabulary (a group of attendants accompanying an important personage), and as an architectural term (an enfilade or series of rooms). But perhaps the word gained most currency in the world of music. As we know, the suite is a favoured cyclical form of baroque instrumental music, representing a series of dance-based pieces that are complementary in the type of movement and unified by a single key (and initially, by the common melodic source).
