Dead Can Dance – Dionysus (2018)

Dancing isn’t just for the dead. After 6 years off the radar and two breakups, Dead Can Dance called upon Dionysus to send the living into a trance. The Melbourne duo, who started on 4AD in the dark wave era of Bauhaus and the Cocteau Twins, broke up in 1998 before returning to the studio in 2012 with the well-named Anastasis (the Greek word for “resurrection”). So, sixteen years of silence. With Dionysus, the DCD recipe has changed a little: the liturgic invocations give way to ancient traditional strings and percussion, and the pair’s vocals are stripped right down to give centre stage to the choirs. The uniqueness of this eleventh album resides in the concept that underlies it:

Warm, immersive blankets of synthesized drone engineered with academic precision by Swedish composer and sound artist David Granström. Cinematic, but never cloying.
‘Empty Room’ is Granström’s full-length debut, and presents a detailed picture of his studies in harmonic simplicity and spatiotextural complexity. If that sounds like a mouthful, a quick listen will no doubt dissolve any hesitance: the album is almost effortlessly beautiful, allowing delicate chords to overlap each other slowly to play on our emotional triggers, but only gently.
The album’s five long pieces blend electronic and acoustic sounds, mostly concentrating on synthesis but occasionally introducing processed string plucks or subtle field recordings. It’s all high end stuff, with traces of Cocteau Twins’ dream pop shimmer in amongst the weighty, Lawrence English-esque atmospheres.

The earth rotates, seasons change… there is but one long day… Time is a beguiling, indistinct entity… sometimes standing still, sometimes bending back upon itself in premonitory memories of the future. Growing out of a musical pen-pal style correspondence that took place over the course of a year, separated by the Atlantic Ocean, Gloria de Oliveira and Dean Hurley passed thoughts and music back and forth that would eventually form their collaborative album Oceans of Time… all without ever meeting or speaking. The result is a sonic tapestry of that exchange: woven from conceptual threads of the celestial within, mortality and the realm beyond the stars.

At roughly half an hour’s running time, the return of Elizabeth Fraser is an EP with all the heft of an album. Fraser’s gaseous soprano arrived fully formed in the 80s as part of the Cocteau Twins. Since then, she has lent her instantly recognisable instrument most famously to Massive Attack – her partner in life as well as in Sun’s Signature, Damon Reece, played drums for them – but hasn’t released a body of work of her own.

In 2020, 4AD turned 40. Never one to be on time for a party, the label is commemorating that landmark in 2021 with the release of ‘Bills & Aches & Blues’. The compilation features 18 of its current artists covering a song of their choosing from 4AD’s past: a creative experiment rooted in the spirit of collaboration and a snapshot of 4AD, 41 years after its inception.

Beach House is a dream pop duo from Baltimore, Maryland, formed in 2004. Singer Victoria Legrand’s vocals have often been compared to those of Nico. Some music outlets have also compared Legrand’s vocals to 1980s psychedelic rock vocalist Kendra Smith of the band Opal. Guitarist Alex Scally plays a Fender Stratocaster guitar in an E♭ Tuning. The group’s influences include This Mortal Coil, Cocteau Twins, The Zombies, Brian Wilson, Françoise Hardy, Neil Young, Big Star, Tony, Caro and John and Chris Bell.

“Sometimes, Forever refers to the idea that the good and bad are both temporary and always returning. Feelings of sorrow and emptiness will pass but they will always come back around, as will feelings of joy. This album explores many ups and downs. It moves from the high of love to hopelessness and disconnect. A frustrated loss of control over life and a disconnect from the self reoccur throughout the record, only to circle back to a willingness to let go and be free, whether through love (shotgun, with u) or blissful ignorance (don’t ask me). It’s a coexistence of light and dark, not only lyrically but tonally. Dan once called it the angels and demons record lol.”

The power of a Winter song is hard to describe, like how the delicate world building of a good book can be more compelling than real life. There’s a make-believe, fairy tale surrealism that sets Winter’s blend of shoegaze and psychedelia apart while existing in the same universe as the ethereal dream pop of Cocteau Twins and Melody’s Echo Chamber. Samira Winter grew up in Curitiba, Brazil, where her Brazilian mother filled their home with the gentle melodies of MPB (música popular brasileira), and her father introduced her to the distorted sounds of American punk. At 18, she moved to Boston where she first released music as Winter, eventually moving to LA’s Echo Park.

London, England’s Wolf Alice will release the deluxe version of their Mercury Prize-nominated third album, Blue Weekend, on October 29th on RCA/Dirty Hit. The deluxe version of the record – which received universal acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic when the original was released this past June – will feature a cover of the Alex G song “Bobby,” as well as live versions of other album favorites known as “The Pool Sessions.”
Blue Weekend is the follow-up to 2018’s, Mercury-prize winning Visions Of A Life, a record that cemented the bands position as one of the UK’s most exciting bands, debuting at No. 1 there upon its release. Following an avalanche of critical praise and DSP playlisting across the world, Blue Weekend was nominated for the prestigious Mercury Prize, making them one of the only artists to be nominated for every single album they’ve released.
Wolf Alice are Ellie Rowsell (vocals, guitar), Joff Oddie (guitar, vocals), Theo Ellis (bass) and Joel Amey (drums, vocals). It has been a decade since the band began as a duo of Ellie Rowsell and Joff Oddie, then later expanding to a four-piece, with Joel Amey and Theo Ellis joining the group. Since then, the band saw their 2015 debut album My Love Is Cool soar to #2 on the UK charts, their sophomore album Visions Of A Life win the 2018 Hyundai Mercury prize, and a GRAMMY nomination for Best Rock Performance
The band have graced the stage at various worldwide festivals including the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury, Coachella, and The Governors Ball NY. They played a massive 187 shows on the Visions Of A Life world tour – including a sold out Alexandra Palace, and two sold out dates at Brixton Academy. TV appearances include The Late Late show with James Cordon. Their most recent album Blue Weekend (produced by Markus Dravs (Arcade Fire, Björk, Brian Eno, Florence + The Machine) sees Wolf Alice embrace a newfound boldness and vulnerability in equal measure.

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/44,1 kHz | Time – 46:23 minutes | 481 MB | Genre: Alternative, Indie
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © HB Recordings Ltd
Inspired by Rimbaud’s poem, Ophelie, Bologna-based trio Ofeliadorme live up to their name. Seductive, tender, immersive, and shrouded in a mystery befitting ancient prose, theirs is a crossroads between the serenity of Cocteau Twins, Portishead’s emotive darkness, and PJ Harvey’s shape shifting pop qualities. It’s ambient, New Wave, dreamy, stargazing electronica. One part foggy warmth, another stark desperation, the results are truly unique, and utterly compelling.

With Cranekiss, Tamaryn emerges from her past efforts in a way that’s inviting, warm-blooded, and shockingly direct. She’s made a big record, loaded with samples, synth triggers and processing that was missing from her previous efforts, pressed into service of a post-adolescent love letter to all the music that she and her collaborators (Jorge Elbrecht of Violens and Lansing-Dreiden, Shaun Durkan of Weekend) hold dear. Her most personal collection of songs to date, Cranekiss represents a long journey, and a new phase in Tamaryn’s music unfolding before you, a blood-red kaleidoscope of desire and late night abandon.
