These two works for violin by Max Bruch owe a great deal to Jascha Heifetz, who was really the first to champion them and, most importantly, the first to record them: the Scottish Fantasy in 1947 and the Second Concerto in 1954. Itzhak Perlman, who has often acknowledged Heifetz’s influence on his taste in and choice of repertoire, recorded both works early in his career (1976) before returning to them a decade later (see volume 40). The Concerto in D minor, Op.44 was written for the great Spanish virtuoso Pablo de Sarasate, who gave its premiere in London in November 1878. Overshadowed, as was No.3, by Bruch’s First Violin Concerto, Op.26, it soon fell into neglect. It is, however, a work full of innovative touches, such as the choice of an Adagio to open the concerto, in place of the conventional Allegro, or the instrumental recitative that follows and both harks back to the first movement and anticipates the finale. Despite its dramatic gestures and the beauty of the solo part, however, this second work failed to match its predecessor’s success. Heifetz’s recording, as well as that made a few years later by Mischa Elman (1956), played an essential role in establishing its place in the repertoire.

Brock van Wey’s BVDub project has long been a source of inspired, sonic detailed and aurally grandiose ambient, where experimental sound design techniques and the overdriven noise of dub techno add untold layers of complexity. Violet Opposition, his latest full-length excursion under the alias, continues in this vein, with waves of fuzzy, hard-to-pigeonhole noise, effects-laden chords, mutilated instrumentation and cascading, ear-pleasing melodies combining to create a quartet of epic, opaque ambient soundscapes. It’s an approach that pays dividends though, with the immense beauty of van Wey’s arrangements and instrumental choices consistently breaking through a wall of echoing, intoxicating aural fuzz.

The guitarist’s 1980 follow-up didn’t pack quite the same knockout punch as its predecessor, but it’s a decidedly solid encore effort nonetheless, with tight backup from a talented unit (harpist Carey Bell, pianist Lafayette Leake, rhythm guitarist Jimmy Johnson, and saxist Scott).

The third publication of the comprehensive complete recording of all Bruckner symphonies in 19 surviving versions

Although the work did not belong to the canon of his nine numbered symphonies, which the composer bequeathed to the court library, he did not destroy them. Perhaps it was the hope that future generations would see this symphony in what he believed to be the right light that prompted him to label it ‘invalid’, ‘completely void’ and ‘cancelled’ at various points. In this CD edition, the text has to be reread and understood. What is the reason for this and what does Bruckner’s music point to.

Coming out of Beijing, China, progressive metal quartet OU (pronunciation: “O”) look to emerge onto the music scene with a debut studio album that although can bring to mind elements from many different kinds of music and bands (Devin Townsend, The Gathering, Radiohead to name a few), it was never limited by trying to fit into a particular niche. Formed by drummer and songwriter Anthony Vanacore, who moved to the region more than eight years ago, the idea behind OU came from each member having a long history of playing in local house bands and seeking new challenges in their growth as musicians. Vanacore would go on to recruit talented guitarist and fellow house band veteran Zhang Jing, as well as highly sought-after bassist Chris Cui, with the three of them laying the initial groundwork for the song structure and creative approach. In seeking a lead singer, the group tried out vocalists by presenting them with the instrumental notes (either played on a MIDI or the rough instrumentals) and inviting performers to interpret their own vocal melodies and lyrics. What far exceeded their expectations is the quality of talent that would ultimately lend itself to the finished product. OU recruited highly talented singer Lynn Wu to front the project, who would bring with her a rich blend of raspy, blues-esque posture counterbalanced brilliantly with powerful, soaring delivery. As Vanacore elaborates on, the contributions from Wu add a whole new dimension to the dynamics of these songs. On their debut, OU set out with only one clear goal in mind, and that was to make certain that every song had its own unique identity. Drummer and songwriter Anthony Vanacore explains: “I really wanted the record to be dynamic. We wanted each song to have its own voice, and at the same time not draw on and do unnecessary filler.”

Compared to the gargantuan Live/1975-85, 2001′s Live in New York City seems like the very definition of restraint, but consider this — not only does it span two discs, it leaves out a considerable portion of the set list from the show and thereby the set list of Springsteen’s celebrated 2000 reunion with the E Street Band. Some critics complained that this record was little more than a tie-in to the HBO special of the same name, but even if that’s true, the record would have merit since it illustrates exactly why this group should never have parted ways. In a sense, even if this is the third live album in Springsteen’s catalog, it’s the first that attempts to replicate the feeling of an evening out with the E Street Band (the Live/1975-85 box tried too hard to be an ultimate experience; MTV Plugged captured a transitional phase). Though most reunions feel a little forced, this feels natural, yet never nostalgic, since the track listing never relies on the predictable. There are no hits in the conventional sense — outside of “Born in the U.S.A.” tucked away on the second disc and an initially uncredited “Born to Run” — but there are many fan favorites interspersed with a few obscurities and new songs, most notoriously the protest song “American Skin (41 Shots).” This works in Springsteen’s favor, since there’s no pandering — only the joy of making music with the band that understands him best. This doesn’t really result in something essential, even if the new songs are quite good, but if you’ve ever been a fan, it’s hard not to warm to Live in New York City.

Morton Gould’s Brass & Percussion is an artifact from the halcyon days of high fidelity, a lost era when “Radio Row” in New York City was bursting at the seams with shops selling every kind of cutting-edge audio gear to hi-fi enthusiasts eager to blow away their wives, neighbors, and everyone else with big audio systems. Forthwith, Brass & Percussion has a BIG sound — recorded in Manhattan Center with classic Neumann U-47 microphones and a huge symphonic band made up of crack East Coast professionals.
