Niin kuin Ismo Alanko laulaa: ”Rakkaus on ruma sana, kaipaus soi kauniimpana”. Näinhän se on. Suomenkielen sana rakkaus on kirosanan kuuloinen eikä sitä suomalainen mies lähde turhaan yleensä ääneen sanomaan. ’Minä rakastan sinua’ on aikojen saatossa ollut suomalaisille varmaan se vaikeimmin lausuttava lause.

Suomalainen musiikkihan perustuu venäläiseen musiikkiin. Meihin ei Ruotsin vallan alla koskaan tarttunut svedujen iloinen duurimeininki mutta venäläisten kaihoisa ja surullinen molli iski meihin kuin veitsi voihin. Jopa suomalaisten kappaleiden soinnut menivät samalla tavalla kuin venäläisten lauluissa vuosien n. 1920-1960 välisenä aikana ja kyllä toki vielä myöhemminkin.

« Marcher sur l’eau, éviter les péages, jamais souffrir, juste faire hennir les chevaux du plaisir… » C’est de cette strophe issue de la chanson Osez Joséphine d’Alain Bashung, qu’Isabelle Boulay a extrait le titre de son nouvel album.

Un album de reprises mais aussi de surprises, tant la rencontre entre l’artiste alsacien et l’interprète québécoise pouvait sembler improbable. «* Ça faisait des années que je tournais autour de son œuvre, je la trouvais tellement exigeante, d’un point de vue littéraire et musical. C’est comme si j avais regardé ses chansons courir comme des chevaux sauvages et que je me disais avoir envie d’en monter au moins une.* »

Les chevaux du plaisir, l’album Boulay chante Bashung est, plus qu’un galop osé, un attelage convaincant. La chanteuse s’est entourée du réalisateur Gus van Go et de musiciens des deux côtés de l’Atlantique; tant français (le guitariste Eric Sauviat), que québécois (le batteur Pierre Fortin) et américains (les multi-instrumentistes Chris Soper et Jesse Singer). L’interprète a abordé ces onze chansons avec respect et humilité, tout en les faisant siennes. Comme le confirme Jean Fauque qui a déjà écrit pour Isabelle, l’auteur de la plupart des titres de Bashung : « J’ai toujours rêvé d’un album de quelques-unes de ses chansons réinterprétées par une femme, tant elles semblent avoir été écrites pour elles. Par elles. Parlant d’elles. Et voici qu’aujourd’hui, cette envie prend vie, et de si belle manière, si touchante. »

The synergy on this album between three personalities – poet Inese Zandere, composer Raimonds Pauls and conductor Ints Teterovskis – has become one of the ports of call in the BALSIS Youth Choir’s “river story”, a special journey that it embarked on already a decade ago. Songs About Latvian Rivers features a lesser-known cycle of eight acappella choral songs composed by Pauls with poetry by Zandere. Also special is the participation of both artists – with Pauls at the piano and Zandere reading – on “River Poetry”, the last track on the album.

A feast of first recordings to celebrate the art of one of the greatest violinist-composers in 18th-century Europe.

‘I have heard a certain Nardini, Leopold Mozart once wrote, ‘and regarding beauty, purity, and equality of tone and in the singing taste nothing more beautiful can be heard.’ The inveterate traveller and collector of culture Charles Burney was no less certain in his judgment of Nardini: ‘he seems the completest player on the violin in all Italy; and, according to my feelings and judgment, his style is delicate, judicious, and highly finished.’

We may judge for ourselves through the medium of his works, presented here in superbly stylish new recordings by a Dutch-based period ensemble with a track record of success in reviving lesser- known names from the golden age of the Baroque violin. Modern luminaries of the violin including Grumiaux, Milstein and Ricci used to perform Nardini’s ‘Sonata in D’, and modern-Baroque virtuosos such as Giovanni Guglielmo and Giuseppe Carmignola have recorded his ornately wrought concertos, but this is the most comprehensive collection ever made of the composer’s chamber-music output.

2022 is an anniversary year for the two Swiss composers Joachim Raff (200th birthday) and Paul Juon (150th birthday). Each wrote an epic work for two pianos, which are now available together on NEOS CLASSICS in premiere recordings. The recording by pianists Igor Andreev (who, like Paul Juon, hails from Russia) and Thomas Gerber also includes the first suite for two pianos by Anton Arensky, Juon’s teacher at the Moscow Conservatory. As a piano duo, Andreev and Gerber have dedicated themselves to Swiss music and its European contexts

Cambra went to the French High School in Barcelona, where he was taught Spanish, French and English in addition to his native Catalan. At the age of six, he began his piano and music studies at the private Escola de Música de Barcelona with Maria Lluïsa Alegre and Albert Atenelle. He began playing concerts and participating in soloist and chamber music competitions at an early age. He received awards at the Carlet International Competition and the Infanta Cristina Piano Competition in Spain. He made his orchestral debut at the age of 15 with the Vic Chamber Orchestra conducted by Jordi Mora in Barcelona. He performed at the Minato Mirai Hall in Yokohama that same year.

Páll Ísólfsson was the first director of the Reykjavík Music School, which opened in 1930. Like other musicians, he was forced by the lack of opportunity in Iceland to study abroad but, unlike others, he was able to return and work as the Organist at Reykjavík Cathedral to support his activities as a composer. His music for the early Ibsen play The Feast at Solhaug, performed in 1943 in Norwegian on Norway’s National day, was his theatrical début. This was followed in 1945 by the more ambitious score for Úr Myndabók Jónasar Hallgrímssonar.

Huey Pierce Smith (January 26, 1934 – February 13, 2023), known as Huey “Piano” Smith, was an American rhythm-and-blues pianist whose sound was influential in the development of rock and roll.

His piano playing incorporated the boogie-woogie styles of Pete Johnson, Meade Lux Lewis, and Albert Ammons, the jazz style of Jelly Roll Morton and the rhythm-and-blues style of Fats Domino. Steve Huey of AllMusic noted that “At the peak of his game, Smith epitomized New Orleans R&B at its most infectious and rollicking, as showcased on his classic signature tune, “Rockin’ Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu”.

Hozier has announced details of his next EP, titled Eat Your Young, which will arrive on his birthday next month. The record will be the Irish musician’s first EP since his Spotify Singles release in 2019 and first non-single release since his second album Wasteland Baby! arrived that same year. Eat Your Young will be released digitally on March 17 – both Hozier’s birthday and St. Patrick’s Day – and will feature three songs. The tracklist will include the title track, “All Things End,” and “Through Me (The Flood).”
