Jan Lisiecki, the Canadian prodigy, makes his Deutsche Grammophon debut with a masterful interpretation of Mozart Concertos. Lisiecki performs with technical assurance in this collaboration with Christian Zacharias, who leads the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks. Jan Lisiecki was still only 23 when he released this, his fifth album for Deutsche Grammophon. It focuses on two of Mendelssohn’s concertos. Piano Concerto No. 1 was written for himself to play when he was about Lisiecki’s age. He must have been a fantastic pianist and Lisiecki proves a splendidly poetic, vibrant advocate. Piano Concerto No. 2, which drew praise from Schumann, has terrific power, and Lisiecki and the thrillingly energetic Orpheus Chamber Orchestra do it proud, treating it as chamber music on a big scale. Alongside the two concertos, Lisiecki gives us a pair of Mendelssohn’s finest solo works, which he plays with characteristic elegance and refinement.

Gifted with a vast talent and supported by a powerful global marketing operation, the young Polish-Canadian pianist Jan Lisiecki has now been catapulted into the ranks of the global piano stars. He was 15 when Deutsche Grammophon had him sign an exclusive contract; at 24, standing in for a poorly Murray Perahia, he played Beethoven’s five Concertos at the head of the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields for a European tour in eight different cities. There are in fact three stand-in pianists for Perahia, given he is prone to recurrent health problems. Nelson Freire, Rudolf Buchbinder and Jan Lisiecki who performed the five concertos, conducting from his keyboard, on the 2, 4 and 6 December 2018 in the Berlin Konzerthaus.

Jan Levander is a composer and multi-instrumentalist from Sweden. When Levander was 17 years old, jazz took hold of his life and became his main musical focus. Over the years, Levander has composed music for various types of constellations, including theater, opera, orchestras, and big bands. Levander’s signum has been various ‘crossovers” between improvised music, chamber music, and Swedish folk music.Jan Levander’s collaboration with Bohuslän Big Band during the 2000s has consisted of several concerts as a saxophone player in the saxophone and woodwind section, arranging and composing for the big band and directing several projects. He knows the big band members well and has written music according to their unique expression and skills, which has been valuable when composing music for Bohuslän Big Band.

Like Korngold, Toch, Schoenberg, Zeisl and Zemlinsky, Richard Stöhr (1874–1967) was one of many Austrian composers driven into American exile by the Nazis. His generous output of music, being rediscovered at last in these Toccata Classics recordings, includes seven symphonies, much chamber music, songs, and choral and piano pieces. His output for organ is not extensive, but its quality is high: the instrument plays an important role in a number of Stöhr’s orchestral works, and here Stöhr presents the organ in two thoroughly attractive duos and an imposing solo sonata. The Sonata and Intermezzi sit downstream from Brahms in the tradition of Viennese classicism; the chromatic touches in the later Suite lean towards the language of Korngold.

In the first third of the 18th-century, Prague was a major music centre, with Italian operas and concertos, French suites, Italian and German oratorios being performed in the city, and the local churches striving to acquire the latest and most virtuosic compositions. Šimon Brixi was one of the most distinguished composers who drew inspiration from this thriving culture, while creating highly inventive music of his own.
