Les Kapsber’girls, an ensemble of four singers and instrumentalists directed by the lutenist Albane Imbs, has already released its debut album (Che fai tù?, released on Muso) which received several awards. The group now joins Alpha for several recordings, starting with Vous avez dit Brunettes? – ‘brunettes’ being the name of the chansons that lovers crooned in each others’ ears by the Bassin d’Apollon or among the groves of the Petit Trianon at Versailles Palace, undeniably light in character yet powerfully authentic. Seventeenth-century France was home to a host of artists whose talent served the nobility and the bourgeoisie, who were extremely partial to these airs. Performing them as vocal solos or duets with lute or viol, Les Kapsber’girls bring back to life, more than three centuries later, these works published by Ballard & Fils, printers to the Sun King, alongside such little-known composers as Julie Pinel and Giuseppe Saggione.

Unexpected? The pairing of viola da gamba and accordion is certainly that! But perhaps even more surprising is how well the singing strings of the veteran instrument harmonize with the subtly vibrating reeds of the centuries-younger newcomer. Also unexpected is this cross-generational meeting of two musicians (what are the odds?), who found each other exploring the ‘poetical humours’ of early seventeenth-century England. Recently reunited in the recording studio after several seasons of rapturously received recitals, with this well-timed album the duo Les inAttendus makes its first entry into the harmonia mundi catalogue.

François Couperin, whose 350th birthday we celebrate this year, defined himself as a creator of musical portraits. The eloquent and sometimes exotic titles of many of these pieces bear witness to this. From the Nations to the Collected Tastes, as well as the Royal Concerts and the harpsichord repertoire, Les Folies françoises have painted throughout this album a portrait that pays homage to one of the greatest composers of the Sun King’s court.

The notion of interpretation constantly raises the question of how to read a score, and therefore of the very subject matter of the score. Particularly in the Baroque period, and especially in the seventeenth-century, the score is but an infrastructure that the composer leaves behind to allow his work to be brought to life. One should not be led astray by it as you might by a trompel’œil; it lacks a great deal of information: nuances, instrumentation, ornaments, playing styles, etc. The majority of these composers thus leave the performers a great deal of latitude for the completion of their scores in order to bring them to back to life.

ROYER: After languishing in obscurity for over two centuries, Pancrace Royer (1705-1755) is now quite well-known for his elegant and dramatic harpsichord music. Music master to the children of Louis XV and composer of the King’s Chamber, General Inspector of the Paris Opéra and director of the Concert Spirituel, Royer is also remembered as the subject of a 1742 police report for getting into a heated argument with his rival Jean-Philippe Rameau in public, and for incurring the wrath of Voltaire when he set that author’s ‘Pandore’ to music without asking permission to modify the text! Decidedly, Royer is a figure worthy of further investigation.
Pyrrhus: was the first of several works Royer composed for the Paris Opera and his only tragédie en musique. Withdrawn after seven performances, it has never been revived. This concert will be its modern premiere – not an unusual occurrence in the world of historically informed performance, but Pyrrhus is distinctive because it is one of the few operas created at the Paris Opera for which the original performance material has survived intact. Theoretically, if the manuscripts were to be placed before the same number of musicians as participated in the creation, it would be possible to give the eighth show… nearly three hundred years later! A most remarkable means of time travel.

It was Jean-Jacques Rousseau in his Dictionnaire de Musique who quoted the philosopher Fontenelle’s famous outburst ‘Sonata, what do you want from me?’. The Italian sonata was the fashion in France at that time and composers had abandoned the character pieces and the works in dance forms that had typified French music until then. Couperin, a proud champion of French music who was nonetheless attracted by the charms of Italian music, had tried to reconcile the musical tastes of the two nations by giving illustrative titles to the various movements of his sonatas.

Alternating between transcendentally inspired secular music and sacred music embodied in theatrical fashion, Geoffroy Jourdain invites us to explore the multiple expressions of human passions: this new adventure of Les Cris de Paris, built around several settings of the ‘Crucifixus’ (including Lotti’s extraordinarily intense versions), urges us to follow a bold Via Dolorosa to the very heart of Venetian Baroque music.

Based on an idea by Renato Gattone. An accordion, a manouche guitar and a double bass give the rhythm to the Les Chats Noirs’ first album, a band that mixes traditional atmospheres constantly looking for contamination and for the research of new musical horizons. An album full of Parisian feeling, evoked by a sinuous voice that warms the contemporary taste, also underlined by a Fender Rhodes piano. A narration weaving together music and poetry, moving from Baudelaire’s verses to the pop music of a century later.

Al Hendrickson became one of the most prolifically recorded studio guitarists in the history of American music following a career as a jazz and dance band guitarist and studies as a classical stringmeister. His name is frequently mutilated in recording credits, leading to the mistaken if perhaps understandable conclusion that more than one guitarist was responsible for all this work. He can be cited as the missing link between the Weavers and the Monkees or between artists with such cool names yet diverse styles as country novelty king Sheb Wooley and bebop pianist Dodo Marmarosa. Famous records this guitarist contributed to include “Moon River,” “Memories Are Made of This,” and “Goodnight, Irene.”

Leslie Thompson Baxter was an American musician and composer. After becoming well known as an arranger and composer for swing bands in the 1940s, he developed his own style of world music-influenced easy listening music, known as exotica, during the 1950s and 1960s. Baxter’s heyday was in the ’50s and ’60s. Although he continued to compose and record in the ’70s, his output was sporadic. Nevertheless, a cult following formed around his exotica recordings that persisted into the ’90s.

Les Baxter is a pianist who composed and arranged for the top swing bands of the ’40s and ’50s, but he is better known as the founder of exotica, a variation of easy listening that glorified the sounds and styles of Polynesia, Africa, and South America, even as it retained the traditional string-and-horn arrangements of instrumental pop. Exotica became a massively popular trend in the ’50s, with thousands of record buyers listening to Baxter, Martin Denny, and their imitators. Baxter also pioneered the use of the electronic instrument the theremin, which has a haunting, howling sound.
