Mana origins date back to a band called Sombrero Verde. In 1975 they decided to get together to play different songs from groups they admired, including The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, The Police, among others. They were originally known as The Spies of the Green Hat, but soon the name was shortened to Green Hat and was eventually adapted into Spanish as Sombrero Verde, as the band wanted to rock in their own language. They were one of the first groups to venture out, composing their own songs even though rock in Spanish was not yet a trend.

Honus Honus (aka Ryan Kattner) has devoted his career to exploring the uncertainty between life’s extremes: beauty and ugliness, order and chaos. The songs on Dream Hunting in the Valley of the In-Between, Man Man’s first album in over six years and his Sub Pop debut, are as intimate, soulful, and timeless as they are audaciously inventive and daring.

The 17-track effort, featuring “Cloud Nein,” “Future Peg,” “On the Mend” “Sheela,” and “Animal Attraction,” was produced by Cyrus Ghahremani, mixed by S. Husky Höskulds (Norah Jones, Tom Waits, Mike Patton, Solomon Burke, Bettye LaVette, Allen Toussaint), and mastered by Dave Cooley (Blood Orange, M83, DIIV, Paramore, Snail Mail, clipping). Dream Hunting…also includes guest vocals from Steady Holiday’s Dre Babinski on “Future Peg” and “If Only,” and Rebecca Black (singer of the viral pop hit, “Friday”) on “On The Mend” and “Lonely Beuys.” The album follows the release of “Beached” and “Witch,“ Man Man’s contributions to Vol. 4 of the Sub Pop Singles Club in 2019.

Alcatrazz are determined to make up for lost time, roaring forwards at warp factor 10 to deliver Take No Prisoners, their sixth studio album and the third in three years. Comprising of ten cracking, charismatic tracks, with each containing the unique fusion of classic American rock with the full grain hard-rocking attitude of British metal, Take No Prisoners sees Alcatrazz energetically soaring and exploring melodic progression with road-warrior riffs. Lead single and video “Don’t Get Mad…Get Even” sees the band collaborating with the legendary Girlschool in a full-force, head-banging fist-pumper, while “Little Viper” rides a scything guitar into a thunderous, Dio-like assault. The band also show their calmer, more expansive side with the epic “Strangers”, but when an album finishes at the burn point of “Bring On The Rawk”, there can be no question that Alcatrazz’s collective boot is repeatedly kicking serious ass!!! Comprised of Doogie White (vocals), Joe Stump (guitars), Jimmy Waldo (keyboards), Gary Shea (bass) and Larry Paterson (drums), and with Giles Lavery and Waldo producing, Take No Prisoners is a loudly, and proudly classic rock album which draws on the Alcatrazz traditions of technically excellent screaming guitars, thunderous rhythm and the sort of vocals and overall aura that evoke prime Dio and Rainbow. And, of course, a primed and fully-tuned up Alcatrazz, whose career is fast taking on Benjamin Button proportions. The Take No Prisoners tour should be a lot of fun!

Albert King recorded a lot in the early ’60s, including some classic sides, but they never quite hit the mark. They never gained a large audience, nor did they really capture the ferocity of his single-string leads. Then he signed with Stax in 1966 and recorded a number of sessions with the house band, Booker T. & the MG’s, and everything just clicked. The MG’s gave King supple Southern support, providing an excellent contrast to his tightly wound lead guitar, allowing to him to unleash a torrent of blistering guitar runs that were profoundly influential, not just in blues, but in rock & roll (witness Eric Clapton’s unabashed copping of King throughout Cream’s Disraeli Gears). Initially, these sessions were just released as singles, but they were soon compiled as King’s Stax debut, Born Under a Bad Sign. Certainly, the concentration of singles gives the album a consistency – these were songs devised to get attention – but, years later, it’s astounding how strong this catalog of songs is: “Born Under a Bad Sign,” “Crosscut Saw,” “Oh Pretty Woman,” “The Hunter,” “Personal Manager,” and “Laundromat Blues” form the very foundation of Albert King’s musical identity and legacy. Few blues albums are this on a cut-by-cut level; the songs are exceptional and the performances are rich, from King’s dynamic playing to the Southern funk of the MG’s. It was immediately influential at the time and, over the years, it has only grown in stature as one of the very greatest electric blues albums of all time.

Here I am. Immersed in moods, colors, wide open landscapes, states of mind. Solitude of our time, loneliness in the middle of urban crowds. These are some of the things, related to my existence, that I want to make audible in my music. No matter how hard I try to venture elsewhere, be something else, exist differently, there is always something that draws me back to myself, to my own personal experiencing and feeling self. This is something that I always carry within me, a tenacious scenery of thoughts, ideas and emotions. I try to make it sound. The outcome of the creative process often materializes as silent, floating and beatless music. Perhaps this spaciousness of musical texture and sound, as well as the strong contrasts between darkness and light in my music connote an aesthetic affiliation with Nordic countries or Northernness in general – both qualities that I personally embrace through my music.

Aki Yli-Salomäki is a Finnish composer and producer. His music has been described as “deep northern” slow-listening music manifested by grand sonority and soaring melodic arcs.

Aigars Reinis – Alfrēds Kalniņš: Organ Music (2023) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

In his 3rd studio album, Aigars Reinis, the music director and organist of the Riga Cathedral, offers complete works for organ by his predecessor in this position – Alfreds Kalnins.

The world premiere recording of these works is performed on the famous E. F. Walcker & Co organ, built in 1884 with four manuals and 124 registers, it was the largest pipe organ in Europe at the time of its unveiling.

As a nine-year-old boy, when his little legs barely reached the pedalboard, Alfreds Kalnins sat at the organ in the church in his hometown in Latvia and led the congregation in a chorale by Martin Luther.

That organ bench eventually became his throne, as Kalnins rose to become the most famous Latvian concert organist of his time.

But first, from 1897 to 1901, he benefited from the teachings of organ professor Louis Homilius at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory.

There, composition took over the young musicians’s imagination, and he wrote his first ten solo songs.

Over the years, that number rose to two hundred fifty songs.

But in Saint Petersburg, Kalnins’ only composition for organ was the Fantasia, which he self-critically and with a wry smile always referred to as the only improvisation he wrote down on paper.

However, as a celebrated improviser, he performed at the organ thousands of times, extemporising on themes from melodies suggested by listeners as well as folk songs and, during Latvia’s war of independence, soldiers’ songs.

It was also during that same war (1918/19) that he composed his first opera, Banuta, and founded the Latvian National Opera, at the same time composing works in the symphonic, choral, piano and other genres.

A richness of northern feeling in conjunction with nature is one of the greatest features of Kalnins’ unique Romantic musical character.

He also found a place for his delicate, refined lyricism in the traditionally grandiose, broad musical dimension of organ music.

Coursing through the cosmic pulse of Jazz-Funk is the inimitable influence of Lonnie Liston Smith. For over five decades, the legendary keyboardist and bandleader has been a driving force in shaping the genre’s sound. Smith made his recording debut as a sideman for heavyweights Miles Davis, Pharoah Sanders, Gato Barbieri and Leon Thomas. He later formed his own ensemble, Lonnie Liston Smith and the Cosmic Echoes which delivered an incredible run of classic albums through the 1970s. His music has served as the foundation for immortal hip-hop samples and ecstatic dancefloor revelry. In late February 2020, Smith headlined Jazz Is Dead’s Black History Month series, giving many jazz fans what would be their last taste of live music before the nightmare of COVID-19 that took over in the weeks that followed. Now, he reunites with Jazz Is Dead to deliver Lonnie Liston Smith JID017 – a full-bloom tribute to the multitude of sonic strains that all lead back to the fingertips of the maestro himself.

For his second album for Chandos, the flute virtuoso Adam Walker explores the music of British composers with pianist Huw Watkins. Vaughan Williams’s Suite de ballet was commissioned by the French flute virtuoso Louis Fleury (who had given the première of Debussy’s Syrinx). The work uses eighteenth-century French dance forms, a common practice in ‘neo-classical’ composition. Bax’s Four Pieces rescue music from an abandoned ballet originally conceived for Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. Sir Lennox Berkeley’s Sonatina was originally written for treble recorder; James Galway’s championship of the piece made it a staple of the flute repertoire. Howard Fergusson’s Three Sketches were composed intermittently over a period of twenty years. The theme of the third piece is a Hindu melody, ‘Koyalinya bole ambuvan’ (Cuckoos sing in the mango tree). Sonatas by York Bowen and William Alwyn complete this varied and engaging programme.
