Chopin turned the Scherzo into a new form of piano composition: an independent virtuoso work which he laced with drama, Polish folk song, tranquillity and nuance. With their rhythmic lilt and filigree ornamentation the Impromptus are infused with Romantic freedom, while the Allegro de concert, Op. 46 was originally conceived as a movement for a projected piano concerto but was instead revised for solo piano.

“As a harpist specializing in the cross-strung harp, an Iberian harp so called for having two rows of crossing strings, the recording of the album culminates a lifelong project. My teacher Nuria Llopis mentioned Diego Fernández de Huete during my first cross-strung-harp lesson in the early 90s of the last century. The first piece I prepared as a student was none other than the gaita (track 17) and, from that moment, Huete’s music accompanied me, as much in my student years as in my professional recitals, which always include works by this composer.

Telemann published the Kleine Kammermusik in 1716 in Frankfurt: his second published collection, intended for performance equally with violin or flute. His preface indicates that these pieces share a light and cantabile style particularly tailored to amateur performers on their respective instruments, with relatively narrow intervals in the solo part. Nonetheless, their unfailingly stylish melodies invite performance by professionals such as this trio of Italian musicians, experienced in period-instrument performance and with a catalogue of distinguished albums on Brilliant Classics to their credit.

Multi-awarded pianist, holder of rare harmonic knowledge, coveted and surprising sideman, signatory of 13 discs as leader, Manuel Rocheman opens with this new album an unprecedented chapter in his career: it is the first time that he invites a blower to his side. The latter fully shares his new aesthetic manifesto. Here, the themes sing, exult, and seem entirely devoted to the cult of a beauty that is found in every improvisation. Dialoguing in his azure sky with a Rick Margitza touched by grace, Manuel Rocheman finds his two long-term partners, with whom the music imposes itself with elegance and fluidity. “Magic Lights” makes us breathe the air of the peaks, enlivened by the momentum of a writing that is as poetic as it is effective.

…Fritz Brun can be considered the last symphonist of the old style, one whose death was announced on 29 th November, 1959 at the age of 82. Born in Lucerne in 1878, Brun stayed true to his time – through thick and thin, one might be tempted to say – because he was a conservative, though not in the worst possible sense of the word. Brun completed his first symphony at the age of 30 and a tenth and final symphony as a seventysome thing yearold. If he happened to write a concerto for piano or cello in the meantime then it resembled a symphony with obbligato solo instrument and the one movement orchestral works were also in the same vein. Even the four momentous string quartets remain true to this line despite the fifty years separating the firstand last…
