The highlight of this year’s season is the concert performance of Handel’s opera “Poro, Re dell’indie” in a German/Italian version by Georg Philipp Telemann. Some of Handel’s Italian operas were so popular that a year later they were performed not only in England, but all over Europe – for example, under Telemann at the Gänsemarkt Opera. So that his Hamburg audience could understand the turbulent history of Alexander the Great and his entanglements with the Indian royal couple Cleofida and Poro, Telemann translated the plot-driving recitatives into German and composed them anew, Handel’s arias remained original and in Italian. “CLEOFIDA – Queen of India” was a box office hit in Hamburg at the beginning of the 18th century.

Jonathan Bree has been called a “master craftsman” by Allmusic and on his fifth solo album he has synthesized his concept into refined and focused pop songs that bring a sense of immediate nostalgia one might get when listening to a John Hughes movie soundtrack or classic pop of a bygone era.

I’ve been making “records” as a leader for 40 years as of 2023. They have been in all different iterations and themes.
In the past few years, having gone back to smaller group recordings, I’ve made my way back to what I like best…the dreamless trio and to a theme I haven’t explored before-Stage and Screen, music from the Broadway stage and the movies.
In putting together my latest trio, Mike Karn on double bass and Isaiah J Thompson on piano, I looked for a new repertoire of songs for us to learn together aside from the things I’ve played with my groups over a 33 year period. I discovered that this new set of songs had the theater or the moving picture in common.

James Melvin Lunceford (June 6, 1902 – July 12, 1947) was an American jazz alto saxophonist and bandleader in the swing era.
Lunceford was born on a farm in the Evergreen community, west of the Tombigbee River, near Fulton, Mississippi, United States. The 53-acre (21 ha) farm was owned by his father, James. His mother was Idella (“Ida”) Shumpert of Oklahoma City, an organist of “more than average ability”. Seven months after James Melvin was born, the family moved to Oklahoma City.
The family next moved to Denver where Lunceford attended high school and studied music under Wilberforce J. Whiteman, father of Paul Whiteman, whose band was soon to acquire a national reputation. As a child in Denver, he learned several instruments. After high school, Lunceford continued his studies at Fisk University. In 1922, he played alto saxophone in a local band led by the violinist George Morrison which included Andy Kirk, another musician destined for fame as a bandleader.

Recorded at his home in Huntsville, Ontario, on the shore of its namesake lake, Bittern Lake represents Stroud’s favorite way of making music: “live off the floor, no overdubs, everybody in one room, all at one time. The musicians I bring along, they just fall in love with the process.” Those musicians on Bittern Lake include members of Stroud’s longtime backing band, the Campfire Kings, as well as singer-songwriters Oh Susanna and Justin Rutledge, ace session drummer Tony Braunagel (Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal) and Cuban-Canadian guitar wizard Elmer Ferrer.

Gustav Mahler was not yet thirty years old when he mounted the podium to conduct his ‘Symphonic Poem’ (Sinfonische Dichtung) in the Large Hall of the Redoute (Vigadó) in Budapest on 20 November 1889. The young man, who had recently been appointed director of the Hungarian capital’s opera house, was presenting an orchestral composition for the first time that evening. This work, which Mahler thought would be ‘child’s play’, was in fact – as he was to admit years later – “one of [his] boldest.” It is the crystallisation of his childhood, marked by the successive deaths of his brothers and sisters but also by the brutality of his father. The work also embodies the dreams that this rebellious young student at the Vienna Conservatory had already forged some ten years earlier, with the new generation of artists and thinkers of which he was a member.

This is a somewhat odd mixture of late baroque works, but the title and the booklet blurb offer a certain logic to it. The most substantial work in the programme is Francesco Geminiani’s ‘The Enchanted Forest’, a lively and colourful orchestral suite composed in 1754 for the Paris stage for a pantomime illustrating a section from Torquato Tasso’s ‘La Gerusalemme Liberata’. Halfway through its performance here, we get Handel’s solo soprano cantata ‘Armida abbandonata’, also based on Tasso’s narrative of the doomed love affair between crusader Rinaldo and the sorceress Armida. And, for still more variety, the disc begins with Geminiani’s orchestral transcription of Corelli’s ‘La Follia’ variations from the latter composer’s sonata opus 5 no. 12.
So, although the rationale is a bit dubious, the music is all somehow associated with witchcraft and it does add up to an enjoyable late-baroque programme. What’s more, it’s all extremely well performed by the very talented Swiss-based early-music ensemble Les Passions de l’Âme directed by violinist Meret Lüthi. They bring superb style and expression to the opening ‘La Follia’ piece, and vivid energy to Geminiani’s sequence of orchestral movements – the more vigorous sections with horns and trumpet going especially well and producing spectacular instrumental textures in places.

Roman accounts of the nobleman Kapsperger reveal a highly eccentric musician: a virtuoso theorbist, a singer, a successful composer, he was said to be arrogant, even irascible.
A character straight out of a novel, as the musicians of L’Escadron Volant de la Reine present him in their first album on harmonia mundi, aided and abetted by a distinguished partner: on this colourful disc, the madrigals, villanellas and arias of ‘Il Tedeschino’ (The German) meet the literary fantasy of the writer Carl Norac.

Lester Willis Young (August 27, 1909 – March 15, 1959), nicknamed “Pres” or “Prez”, was an American jazz tenor saxophonist and occasional clarinetist.
Coming to prominence while a member of Count Basie’s orchestra, Young was one of the most influential players on his instrument. In contrast to many of his hard-driving peers, Young played with a relaxed, cool tone and used sophisticated harmonies, using what one critic called “a free-floating style, wheeling and diving like a gull, banking with low, funky riffs that pleased dancers and listeners alike”.
Known for his hip, introverted style, he invented or popularized much of the hipster jargon which came to be associated with the music.

The great Lester Young, nicknamed “Prez” by Billie Holiday, truly began his rise as one of the legends of jazz with the Count Basie Orchestra in Kansas City. This compilation of his great recordings gets its name from a jazz head written by Basie himself to celebrate and highlight Young’s skills as a saxophone player (the opening track of the record).
