The debut album, produced by Chris Cohen, reveals tender beauty and lively grace of the folk singer, who is usually equipped with little more than an acoustic guitar played beaten or plucked, whose large vocal spectrum within the barren instrumentations is all the more remarkable because with her encouraging, virtuosically performed melody with her crystalline vocal timbre, she shows a clarity that, Vashti Bunyan or Karen Dalton or Adrienne Lenker and yet represents American folk songwriting in the now. The album offers equal parts melancholy, deep love and exhilaration to cheer up mourners. A patchwork of personal songs about different relationships, sometimes accompanied by pedal steel, banjo, violin and also drums and bass, to which Buck Meek (Big Thief) or Tenci contributed with recorded parts. *Secretly Canadian

Henry Purcell died on 21 November 1695 at the age of thirty- six. The music he had written for the funeral of Queen Mary only eight months earlier was performed again for his burial service. Soon afterwards, several composers paid tribute to Purcell by writing odes in his memory. Jeremiah Clarke’s homage to ‘Orpheus Britannicus’ in his Ode on the Death of Henry Purcell is a deeply moving token of the younger composer’s admiration. Alas, Clarke too was destined to die in his prime, and we can only imagine what the destiny of British music might have been if their lives had been prolonged. After an acclaimed production of Dido and Aeneas, Vincent Dumestre and Le Poème Harmonique continue their exploration of the world of Purcell and seventeenth-century English music. Constantly keeping an ear out for multiple musical ramifications, from Dowland to Lully by way of the Elizabethan masques, this new programme spotlights the genius of Jeremiah Clarke, whose sadly premature death makes us regret all the marvels he might have produced. Here is a collection of masterpieces coupling two of Purcell’s most popular works with an exceptional discovery. (c) Alpha Classics

In 1682, Versailles became the main residence of Louis XIV and it needed new assistant chapel masters; in the end, the King imposed his choice, and that was Lalande, the King’s favourite, a young man of 26 who would become Versailles’s great composer of religious music. Bringing a new vision of the orchestra after the inflexible Lully, he dared to create completely new musical architectures, with new orchestral combinations that his predecessors never attempted, foregrounding some rarer solo instruments. In this sense, he represents the missing link between Lully and Rameau, the last scion of the French baroque orchestral tradition. For this record, a little stone in the monument to Lalande’s 77 great motets, Vincent Dumestre and his Poème harmonique have chosen to showcase his first sallies in writing for the Chapelle Royale with Ecce nuncfrom 1683 and above all the grandiose Deitatis majestatem from 1681, and the record runs up to the final corrections – Lalande incessantly edited his work – of the Te Deum. This work provides the most striking sonic image of majesty: the Te Deum, composed in 1684, was re-written many times up until the 1720s, the date of the final signed edition. This version, which shows the later development of Lalande’s writing, is also made remarkable because in it the composer has noted the precise duration of each verse! This gives us a precise idea of the metronomical tempos that he used – and what a precious tool for today’s musicians. This album, recorded in public at the Chapelle Royale in Versailles, follows this demanding and unflagging rhythm to within a few dozen seconds.

Allegri’s Miserere, its heartbreaking harmonies, its verses alternately chanted and ornamented, its seraphic voices: sheer Baroque magic. Since its composition in Rome in 1630, the work has constantly been transformed. Le Poème Harmonique approaches the score through the prism of its metamorphoses, the ornaments and transpositions added since the time when Mozart himself transcribed the piece, then jealously guarded by the Vatican, which punished publication of it with anathema. From the Renaissance onwards, musicians dressed up the finest secular tunes of their time in sacred words. The most famous example of all, the Pianto della Madonna, in which Monteverdi transferred to the Virgin Mary the mournful strains of his Lamento d’Arianna, illustrates these exchanges between repertories. Similarly, his famous Sì dolce è ’l tormento is here transformed into Sì dolce è ’l martire with the help of the mysterious Virgilio Albanese. Other masters of the period, such as Rossi, Mazzocchi and Marazzoli, also adapted their works to sacred texts. With this programme, which builds on the experience of the album Nova Metamorfosi (ALPHA 039), one of Le Poème Harmonique’s major triumphs, Vincent Dumestre celebrates the twentieth anniversary of his ensemble.

Pierre-Gabriel Buffardin, a French-born flautist, was active at the court of Dresden. He is known to have been the teacher of Johann Joachim Quantz and a friend of Johann Sebastian Bach, who wrote a few concertante arias for him in his cantatas. He was considered one of the greatest virtuosos of his time. This recording is the world premiere of a recently discovered collection of sonatas. Accompanied by the Concerto `a cinq parties, these sonatas represent for the flautist Olivier Riehl and the ensemble Le Petit Trianon a recreational area conducive to enjoyment, combining virtuosity, energy and expressiveness to produce a recording rich in colour and novelty.

This recording is the sequel to The Attaignant Consort’s first disc – Madame d’amours (RAM 0706) – and the third and last ina series of three recordings presenting the art of the Renaissance flute, both as solo instrument (RAM 1201) and as a consort instrument from the late fifteenth century until the middle of the seventeenth. This disc places the accent on the musical transition of the seventeenth century, and shows how the consort of flutes adapted to the new styles of composition, which pushed it to the very limits of its possibilities. This recording illustrates the repertory for flute consort from its beginnings, including examples of the first instrumental fantasias, of airs de cour in four voices, a suite of English songs, bicinia, and finally French airs enriched with Baroque ornaments from the early eighteenth century.

The ATTAIGNANT CONSORT was co-founded in 1998 by Kate Clark, Frédérique Chauvet, Marion Moonen and Marcello Gatti. Mathieu Langlois joined the ensemble in 2008. Drawn together by a fascination with the renaissance flute, they have collaborated over many years with the Italian flute-maker Giovanni Tardino, exploring the sound world of this, until now, little-known instrument. The ensemble’s work has been greatly enriched by their long-standing collaboration with distinguished English lutenist Nigel North, begun in 2007. Each of the musicians in the Attaignant Consort has a multi-facetted musical career independent of the Consort: above all performers, their combined portfolios comprise outstanding achievements in the fields of teaching, conducting, ensemble direction, editing, writing and musicology. They come together for performances as the Attaignant Consort, sharing a deep love of the poetry and music of the Renaissance and early baroque. The Attaignant Consort works from facsimile editions of original part-books rather than scores, and performs as often as possible from memory, mindful of the aural tradition of learning in which many sixteenth-century instrumentalists were educated. The ensemble not only performs written diminutions from the period, but also those composed specially for it by Kate Clark. The ensemble’s first CD Madame d’amours was released on the Ramee label, to broad critical acclaim, in October 2007.

If Johannes Tinctoris (1435-1511) is today widely recognised as one of the most renowned music theorists of his time, he was also a perceptive observer of the musical practices of the Renaissance. After studying in Orléans, he held several positions in Cambrai, Liège and finally Naples. Here his gifts as a composer could flourish at the court of King Ferrante of Aragon as a chaplain, legal advisor and music tutor of Ferrante’s daughter Beatrice. This programme retraces his career through his extremely varied output: French and Italian songs, Mass movements, and instrumental pieces.

Born in Leuze (Hainaut) around 1430, Johannes Martini was initially active in Konstanz, then in Milan and Ferrara, where he died on 23 October 1497. Closely connected with the d’Este family, he was paid in 1479 for the production of a large volume of vocal music for the ducal chapel of Ferrara. He is also the key contributor to the Casanatense Chansonnier, which was compiled for the marriage of Isabella d’Este to Gianfrancesco II Gonzaga in 1490. Thanks to these collections, we can for the first time present a glimpse of the immense output (motets, psalms, mass movements, chansons, instrumental chansons) of one of the most refined composers of the generation before Josquin’s.

The composers Arnold and Hugo de Lantins were natives of the diocese of Liège, but it was in Italy, principally in Pesaro and Venice that their presence is confirmed between the years of 1420 and 1430. As with the works of Johannes Ciconia, a fellow native of Liège whose time in Italy had preceded theirs, their secular and sacred compositions are preserved in manuscripts copied in Italy. Closely rubbing shoulders with their illustrious contemporary Guillaume Dufay, the Lantins brothers combined archaic traits with the earliest characteristics of the Renaissance. Le Miroir de Musique presents a large selection of French and Italian chansons which enriches our view of the cultural sophistication of the Italian courts at the start of the 15th century.

Born around 1380 in the Duchy of Limburg, possibly in the little town of the same name, Johannes de Limburgia was active for a long time in Liège, then in Italy. We have evidence of his presence in Vicenza between 1431 and 1436, and several of his works refer explicitly to Vicenza, as well as to Venice and Padua, demonstrating a strong connection with northern Italy, where his music was compiled. His output – more than 45 works – is contained in three large manuscripts from the first half of the fifteenth century, alongside music by other composers from north of the Alps, such as Johannes Ciconia and Guillaume Dufay. Though only sacred music by Limburgia has survived, it is richly varied, reflecting both the consistency of the Franco-Flemish style and the composer’s own inventive taste for harmonic and melodic experimentation.
