During his stay in the French capital, the German poet Heinrich Heine wrote a series of articles for the Augsburger Allgemeine Zeitung, entitled “Musikalische Saison in Paris” (= musical season in Paris). These articles still make for fascinating reading, with Heine providing a highly ironic and personal account of musical life in Paris. And, of course, he repeatedly dealt with composer Franz Liszt. This was again the case in the article devoted to the year 1841. That year, Liszt had given two piano recitals based on the music of Beethoven. Heine writes the following: “Despite his genius, Liszt meets with opposition here in Paris, which usually consists of serious musicians and crowns his rival, the imperial Thalberg, with laurels. – Liszt has already given two concerts in which he has played all by himself, against all tradition, without involving other artists. He is now preparing a third concert in honour of Beethoven. This composer must indeed appeal most to the taste of someone like Liszt.”

One of the great originals in the jazz hierarchy, Lester Young was without doubt the most influential tenor saxophonist after Coleman Hawkins. A highly sensitive, graceful player, and an enigmatic personality, Young had a winning sense of time and space and a most engaging gift for improvising on songs rather than chord sequences. He played with great feeling for the lyric of a song with a very special, bittersweet brand of melancholy. There are some jazz exponents whose recorded work is worth preservation and close attention. Lester is one such jazz exponent. 2xHD are proud to bring present this historic recording to the digital high resolution world.

This release sees a selection of the 1975 recordings made in Copenhagen by legendary alto sax player Lee Konitz and tenor sax player Warne Marsh reissued in high-resolution digital quality. Both students of Lennie Tristano, these cool jazz kings weave magical, meandering melodic lines that delighted the fans who brought Konitz and Marsh to Denmark and undoubtedly continue to entrance listeners today. Clearly, Konitz & Marsh had by this stage of their respective careers taken their interest in music to a point which for the time at least was scarce amongst jazz musicians. It is amazing music from the two Lennie Tristano pupils.

Released here for the first time, 2016’s Larry Young in Paris: The ORTF Recordings is something of a lost treasure rediscovered. Recorded while the Newark, New Jersey-born pianist/organist Larry Young was living in France from 1964-1965, these recordings were broadcast once on French public radio and then archived for decades. As a listening experience, The ORTF Recordings are a revelation, showcasing the innovative Young (who died tragically in 1978 at age 38) and his group of equally youthful and talented musicians, including 19-year-old Newark trumpeter Woody Shaw. Technically speaking, half of the tracks were recorded under the leadership of tenor saxophonist Nathan Davis, a fellow Newark native, who had been performing in Paris with saxophonist Eric Dolphy. In fact, it was Davis who first brought Shaw, and later Young and drummer Billy Brooks, to Paris. With their New Jersey backgrounds and shared love of John Coltrane and modernist Hungarian composers like Bartok and Kodaly, this was a group of voraciously intellectual, highly creative musicians on the cusp of greatness. Notably, these sessions prefigure Young’s landmark 1965 Blue Note album, Unity, which also featured Shaw. While these recordings are more ad hoc in nature than Unity, one can clearly hear the angular modalism and cutting-edge harmonies that Young and Shaw borrowed from Coltrane, pianist McCoy Tyner, and others, and would then build on it throughout the rest of the ’60s into the ’70s. This is particularly evident on the two Shaw originals included here, “Beyond All Limits” and “Zoltan,” both later re-recorded for Unity. Also engaging are the handful of Young trio numbers here, including his buoyant take on “Mean to Me,” which display just how adroit and inventive a keyboardist he was. That said, even cuts like “Talkin’ About J.C.,” “La Valse Grise,” and “Discotheque,” recorded here with a group of European musicians gathered together by producer and radio host Jack Dieval, are prime examples of soulful, harmonically aggressive jazz. Ultimately, The ORTF Recordings offer a revealing snapshot of a new breed of jazz musicians, Young and Shaw, who would return to the states on the heels of their time in Paris and revolutionize the sound of modern jazz.

Bach composed ten partitas – three for solo violin, one for solo flute and six for keyboard. As the term partita may mean, to quote from the Oxford Composer Companion to Bach, “a suite of dances or a set of variations” – it is no more precise than many other musical terms. If there is no obvious difference between the partita and the suite, there seems to be no justification for two separate terms. In the sixteenth century partita indicated one of a sequence of variations, but this meaning evolved, coming to signify a collection of movements and later – by the time of Bach’s keyboard partitas – a suite of dances.
