Martin Taylor’s star rose considerably during the 1990s with a flurry of recording activity as a leader, especially dates such this one from the series he did for the Scottish label Linn. With a rhythm section of pianist David Newton, bassist Brian Shiels, and drummer John Rae, the guitarist’s program is wide-ranging and has some surprises. Taylor wrote a pair of originals: The opener, “73 Berkeley Street,” at first gives the impression of being a groove tune until the quartet launches into a brisk bop setting, and his “Angel’s Camp” has a rhythm & blues flavor with a touch of gospel. Country great Eddy Arnold’s “You Don’t Know Me” has been covered by a few jazz musicians, but Taylor’s bluesy guitar and Newton’s soulful piano make this extended performance a treat. Taylor overdubbed a second guitar on his otherwise unaccompanied treatment of Ike Isaacs’ snappy “After Hours,” and he’s truly solo on a soft lyrical take of Hoagy Carmichael’s timeless “I Get Along Without You Very Well.”

Through our pandemic era Martin Sturtzer has transformed his home studio into a sanctuary. His Dyson Sphere Alpha (156:10) collects six tracks worth of live streamed sets from an ambitious schedule of Sunday evening performances. Across this outsized collection the atmosphere is wordless, but not thoughtless. As meaning crystalizes in the trembling air, the clean strike of high notes makes for an easier upward reach of the mind – toward a deeper interpretation of the spirit. All these recordings of live realizations begin in a contemplative nature. A few stay in this zone throughout their duration, but from most emerge lines of ordered notes, exerting a serene, secure authority. Haunting and time bending the warmth of rapt noble toned synthesizer patches ascends like incense. As the energy level of each set rises, so does the appeal of Strutzer’s selections. Clinging tightly to Berlin-School sources a melodic backbone may be located in the prevalent sequencer engine. Coming fully to life these insistent patterns provide an aural energy in the language of electricity. The structure is more spiral than linear. Circling around core chords in ever tightening loops, Sturtzer disappears into the performance. But perhaps more interesting are the dark tones at the edge of these works. The shifting shapes and expressive shades of sound portend the vast scale of an unknown expanse ahead. The prevailing mood, which is enigmatic, is yet reassuring. Here we may watch the darkness until the darkness leaves us, or we leave it. Some enjoy this kind of music as a means of wandering the cosmos in a daze, to keep the realization of existence at arm’s length – while the more adventurous among us use it to better understand their deeper self. In his meditations on enchantment Martin Sturtzer inspirits us. As sure as twilight will follow these fading sonic shadows, the electric night concedes the healing of fractured minds, and the knowing of wounded souls. So plug in the synths, dim the lights, and breathe deep… for when it is time for a concert, it is time to dream of a better world.

“The idea of this album came to us during the first Covid-19 lockdown in March 2020. Martina and I share a deep enthusiasm for new music and we are always eager to find the common roots of composers who have been a constant part of our development as musicians, going right back to our school years. What have Berio and Boulez in common with Bach? Firstly, polyphony. The Bach Sonatas, played here on piano and cello, are in fact “Sonate a 3″, in which the use of different timbres and rhythms goes along with the Bach’s mastery of counterpoint and the sheer inventiveness of the musical motifs. We find that these elements of the composer’s creativity are also very present in the music of Berio and Boulez. In Berio’s Sequenza for cello, the exploration of the idea of polyphony on a monodic instrument, the variety of atmosphere and the pure technical virtuosity find their roots in Bach’s music. Boulez, with his Douze Notations for piano, pays a huge debt to the old German tradition of counterpoint, filtered through the twelvetone system of Schönberg. Boulez clearly stated that he wanted to make fun of the Second Viennese School, and yet the character of each piece and the virtuosity of each tiny nuance recall Bach’s heritage, in particular his rhythmic precision and the effective way that the different ‘voices’ can be heard. These ideas have encouraged us to offer listeners some fascinating parallels between centuries which can seem so far from one another. We hope that re-building these bridges in our own time might help to maintain dialogues and echoes of the history of our common cultural patrimony.” (Michele Gamba and Martina Rudic)

Even after playing it in concert together the previous summer, Argerich, Kremer, Bashmet, and Maisky still spent five days in Berlin recording Brahms’ Piano Quartet in G minor. They spent a Saturday in late February 2003 tuning up and the next four days recording, one day for each movement. On top of that, they practiced every morning back in their hotels. And this is Martha Argerich, Gidon Kremer, Yuri Bashmet, and Mischa Maisky here: not only arguably the four greatest living virtuosos on their instruments, but friends who’ve been playing chamber music together for decades. How could they have spent six hours recording the opening Allegro? How could they have spent any less? Considering that Argerich, Kremer, Bashmet, and Maisky are also four of the most highly individualistic and idiosyncratic performers in the history of classical music, they probably took five-and-three-quarter hours just working the kinks out. But the results are absolutely worth it: despite all their arduous work, Argerich, Kremer, Bashmet, and Maisky play with unrelenting recklessness, taking musical, dramatic, and — most of all — emotional chances few other performers would dare take. Rhythms, tempos, dynamics, phrasing, form, and every note are all infused with their individual and collective technical and interpretive virtuosity. While their performance may be too exciting to listen to every day, it is nevertheless one of the two or three greatest performances of Brahms’ Piano Quartet in G minor ever recorded. Deutsche Grammophon’s sound is right there in the room with you.

Stylistically free and psychedelic in nature, the release of Dreamers signals a new trajectory for the musician who has already featured on a wide ranging and diverse catalogue of albums including Radiohead’s Kid A. As a founding member of Loose Tubes and Polar Bear, Mark Lockheart has always remained ahead of the curve and has constantly explored new directions in his own music. Dreamers epitomises this adaptation and evolution, allowing the music to speak beyond the boundaries of genre and predictability. Mark has created an album which is direct and unpretentious but also surprising and unexpected.

Pál Hermann, born in Budapest in 1902, was not only one of the leading cellists of his generation; he was also an important composer, one of the major figures in Hungarian music in the generation after his teachers Bartók and Kodály. But since only two of his works were published before his early death – in 1944, at the hands of the Nazis – and many more of them were lost, he has not had the esteem that he deserves. The works on this second volume of his surviving compositions – here mostly chamber works for strings, several in their first recordings – have the wiry humour, sprung and spiky rhythms and Hungarian melos that mark him out as a worthy successor to Bartók – and hints at how much was lost with his murder.

Since the rediscovery of Scott Joplin’s ragtime genius in the 1970s his music has been an important part of the popular/light classical repertoire. Yet though he called himself with some justification “The King of Ragtime Writers” he was not a brilliant pianist; he was actually a trained violinist and cornet player and was lead singer of the Texas Medley Quartette. This wide experience helped to make his piano rags full of interest. All the same, most recordings concentrate on the most familiar works and ignore the many other superb pieces in Joplin’s substantial output. This new album from New York pianist Marilyn Nonken (Professor of Music at New York University’s Steinhardt School) includes some well-known works and some rarities. Rags, concert waltzes and other novelty pieces show brilliance and a well-honed craft.

At the time, Marillion’s remarkable, full-fledged 1983 debut Script for a Jester’s Tear was considered an odd bird: replete with Peter Gabriel face paint and lengthy, technical compositions, Marillion ushered in a new generation of prog rock that bound them forever to the heroics of early day Genesis. Intricate, complex, and theatrical almost to a fault, Script for a Jester’s Tear remains the band’s best and sets the bar for their later work. Filled with extraordinary songs that remained staples in the band’s live gigs, the album begins with the poignant title track, on which Fish leads his band of merry men on a brokenhearted tour de force that culminates with the singer decrying that “…the game is over.” “He Knows You Know,,” a song sprinkled with drug paranoia and guilt; as the song veers to its chorus, Fish announces, “Fast feed, crystal fever, swarming through a fractured mind.” If “The Web” hints at a grain of commercialism, “Garden Party” is a joyous anthem that showcases Marillion at the peak of its powers. Bogged down by some hilariously over-the-top British poetry, “Chelsea Monday” may be one of the album’s lesser moments (if there are any), but the magical “Forgotten Sons” concludes the opus magnificently. Luckily for Marillion fans, EMI released a remastered version of Script with two different versions of “Market Square Heroes,” “Three Boats Down from the Candy,” “Grendel,” “Chelsea Monday,” the demo of “He Knows You Know,” and an alternate track titled “Charting the Single.” A vital piece for any Marillion head and an essential work for any self-respecting first- or second-generation prog rock fan. – John Franck
