Sonata No. 7, Op. 10 No. 3 in D major (1796-8). Often referred to as Beethoven’s first completely realised masterpiece among the piano sonatas, this fine work – despite having no nickname – has remained a firm favourite with pianists and audiences and a staple of the repertoire. The only one of the three Op. 10 sonatas in four movements, its opening Presto is irrepressibly energetic yet tightly organised motivically, all the material being derived from the opening: a descending four-note scale and a rising third and semitone. Indeed one can easily show that the entire sonata is based on the opening four bars – ending as they do on a fermata which will come into its own in the finale. The slow movement, ‘broad and sad’, has long been celebrated as a touchtone for Beethoven’s ability to express deep personal emotion, and he was rarely so subjective in later sonatas – perhaps until the Hammerklavier. The sweetly singing Menuetto seems to arise out of the gloom of the Largo like balm on troubled waters: its Trio is busy and slightly banal – possibly a deliberate respite on Beethoven’s part. The explosively witty Rondo finale opens on the subdominant and Beethoven plays with our expectations throughout, breaking off and restarting abruptly and leading us through all kinds of keys. This movement surely influenced the finale of the slightly later 2 nd Symphony.

Moral Hygiene comes on the heels of Ministry’s acclaimed 2018 album AmeriKKKant (hailed by Loudwire as Jourgensen’s own “state of the union” address) that was written as a reaction to Donald J. Trump being elected president-though Jourgensen says this new album is more informational and reflective in tone. “With AmeriKKKant I was in shock that Trump won. I didn’t know what to do, but I knew I had to do something. Because I believe if you are a musician or an artist you should be expressing what’s going on around you through your art. It’s going to happen whether you do it consciously or unconsciously. Moral Hygiene however has progressed even further into a cautionary tale of what will happen if we don’t act. There’s less rage, but there’s more reflection and I bring in some guests to help cement that narrative.”

Ministry’s 14th record, and first on Nuclear Blast, should be a no-brainer, a furious screed against Donald Trump and the alt-right set to the industrial metal sound that Ministry perfected decades ago. Frontman Al Jourgensen has trod this territory many times before, sampling George H.W. Bush’s voice into “N.W.O.” back in 1992, and dialling things up on 2006’s Rio Grande Blood, which featured another George Bush claiming to be a “brutal dictator.”
On Amerikkkant, it’s possible that Jourgensen let his anger get in the way of his musicianship. The samples have become almost overpowering, turning tracks like “Twilight Zone” and the eponymous title track into right-wing media mashups. The rhetoric is past expiry too, cycling through familiar slams on “fake news” and “MAGA” which, while still relevant, felt old this time last year. It’s low-hanging fruit, surprising from a singer who is usually one of metal’s most biting social critics.
Al Jourgensen’s signature vocal bark remains unchanged, but things have slowed down musically. Fans of Ministry’s lightning-fast thrash moments will be disappointed by the record’s grinding pace, making Fear Factory singer Burton C. Bell’s guest spot on “We’re Tired of It” an instant highlight. However, it can’t save Amerikkkant from feeling like Ministry’s potential is locked in second-gear. Al Jourgensen has the passion and the intent, now all he needs are the songs.

The connection between the life and work of the composer seems hardly more compelling than in the case of Mendel ssohn’s String Quartet no. 6 in F minor op. 80. Nothing seems more able to demystify a work of music than death itself. The title page of the manuscript of the String Quartet in D minor bears the date ‘In March 1824’ in Schubert’s own hand. And indeed, in the previous year Schubert did experience tragedy: professional failure and private disappointments tormented the composer in 1823.

The music on Wizard of the Vibes features Milt Jackson with the Thelonious Monk Quartet in a 1948 session combined with a 1952 date with his bandmates from the Modern Jazz Quartet (at that time including John Lewis, Percy Heath, and Kenny Clarke) along with alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson, who was oddly credited as the leader of the date on the original release, though it clearly seems to be Jackson in charge. The chemistry between Jackson and Monk on classics like “Misterioso,” “Evidence,” “I Mean You,” and “Epistrophy” is immediately apparent, although Kenny “Pancho” Hagood’s vocals on the standards “All the Things You Are” and “I Should Care” remain an acquired taste. Jackson introduces three originals on the latter session, including the debut of his highly acclaimed “Bag’s Groove,” which has long since become one of the most celebrated and popular jazz compositions. Lewis’ uncanny musical ESP is evident throughout the session, as he feeds Jackson imaginative lines for his improvisations. Donaldson is enjoyable at times but doesn’t always play at a level equal to the rhythm section, resorting to rather run-of-the-mill ideas in some of his improvisations. Milt Jackson’s inventive playing throughout both dates makes this an important CD in his considerable discography, so it should be a part of any bop fan’s collection. –Ken Dryden, AllMusic
