The Miró Quartet, generally considered as one of the most established US classical ensembles, makes its PentaTone debut with a complete recording of the Beethoven StringQquartets. Beethoven’s quartets truly stand at the centre of the repertoire, and present the summit for any quartet. Listening to Beethoven’s entire string quartet oeuvre – from the early Op. 18 volume and Rasumovsky-Quartets to the otherworldly and modern-sounding pieces written during his final years – is a life-changing experience, and so is performing them integrally. This collection offers the results of fifteen years of playing and recording Beethoven, and not only anticipates the 2020 commemoration of the composer’s 250th birthday, but also the 25th anniversary of the Miró Quartet itself.

Atmospheric music from the Swiss mountains with late-romantic echoes, impressionism, and new compositional techniques – that’s what Mirjam Lötscher’s debut recording “Sounds of Lucerne” offers. Together with pianist Thomas Wise, she presents sonatas and fantasies for flute and piano by Reto Stadelmann and Joseph Lauber – two Swiss composers of the 20th and 21st centuries who fuse the deeply rooted traditions of the Alpine country with contemporary elements to create their own forms of musical expression. Stadelmann’s works and Lauber’s Fantaisie pour flûte et piano have been recorded here for the first time – a discovery not only for Swiss classical music lovers!

This panoramic survey of Argentine tangos shows the genre in all its rich variety of moods and virtuosity. It salutes Ángel Villoldo, the father of tango, whose El choclo (‘The Corncob’) is one of the most famous tangos of all time, and charts the music’s evolution towards the romanticism and lush harmonies of Augustín Bardi. Improvisatory styles, syncopation and jazz harmonies were introduced by such great composers as José Pascual and Orlando Goñi, whilst Enrique Francini developed his personal qualities of dissonance and rhythmic flair into the 1960s. This survey is the first in a series that will document around one hundred rare and classic tangos, all performed by the Argentine pianist Mirian Conti.

It all began with a fascinating find in the well-known antiquarian music shop Schlohlein in Basel, where Miriam Terragni came across a substantial but previously neglected Romantic flute sonata, an era which offers a fairly slim repertoire for flute soloists. The sonata was composed by Max Meyer-Olbersleben and it is a mystery to Terragni that this romantic bravura does not belong to the flute repertoire. The other recorded works are true but forgotten pearls of literature for the instrument. Miriam Terragni is the solo flutist of the Argovia Philharmonic under the baton of Douglas Bostock. Her work as solo flutist was influenced by her work with the Orchester Philharmonique Suisse. There she worked together with renowned conductors such as Mario Venzago, Charles Dutoit, Gerd Albrecht and Nello Santi. As a soloist, chamber musician and orchestra musician, Miriam Terragni celebrates success throughout Europe. Productions for radio and TV emphasize her versatility. In addition to her busy activity in orchestras and as a passionate chamber musician, she teaches at the music schools at Laufen, Allschwil and Reinach.

Throughout her time as a concert singer in 1960s America Miriam Makeba was promoted as the embodied voice of a sonic, imagined Africa. Where her white audiences were attracted to the complete „otherness“ of her African blackness, her black American audiences saw themselves – or imagined versions of themselves – put on stage, and built solidarities between their own struggle and the struggle against apartheid.

Miriam Makeba’s sixth and final RCA Victor album largely abandoned the South African focus of her earlier recordings (particularly her most recent release, the joint LP An Evening With Belafonte/Makeba, which was devoted to songs in South African tribal languages) for a collection of mainstream pop on which she was backed by an orchestra conducted by Sid Bass.

This record was pure joy to produce. Mireille wrote amazing music and sang so beautifully. And Luca, Logan and Anthony brought so much to the music. One of my favorite productions. (David Binney) Complete artist, entire musician, this is how one could describe Mireille Boily, who simultaneously wears the hats of singer, pianist, improviser, composer, lyricist and orchestrator. With a rich and vast professional experience, Mireille is a jazz musician respected both in Quebec and abroad. She has completed several international tours, including recently in China, as a soloist for the show Cavalia. We could hear it in jazz clubs from Beijing to Buenos Aires through Sao Paulo. Mireille is an integral part of the Montreal jazz scene, lending her voice to multiple composers (Jean-Nicolas Trottier, Philippe Côté, Joel Kerr, Rafael Zaldivar). The Orchester National de Jazz de Montréal commissioned her a work, Les chants du Phoenix, for which she was awarded by the Conseil des Arts et Lettres du Québec. After three independently produced albums, Mireille Boily signs her fourth opus. Directed by David Binney and recorded in Los Angeles with a group chosen to measure, Moving Refuges is a poetic fresco rooted in the four elements, honoring the path taken during a deep inner quest.

For her seventh album, Miranda Lambert takes an unexpected time warp to the 1980s — and has a helluva lot of fun. With stuttering guitar and video game sound effects, “Mess With My Head” is country Pat Benatar and “Track Record” sounds like it’s off a John Hughes soundtrack. Meanwhile, the staccato sass of “White Trash” and sweet optimism of “Bluebird” would’ve fit right in on Country FM, circa 1985. There is no shortage of Lambert’s patented confidence on the swaggering “It All Comes Out in the Wash,” swamp-bluesy “Holy Water” and “Way Too Pretty for Prison” — a woozy duet with Maren Morris that jokes about killing a cheating husband and includes a chain gang call-and-response. She unleashes her full vocal power on hard-charging rager “Locomotive” and winks at Brothers Osborne’s “Tequila Again” with the liquor love song “Tequila Does.” But on closer “Dark Bars,” Lambert shows that maybe her tough-girl image gets heavy to carry — revealing that while she’s “not in pain, not on pills,” she can’t quit looking for trouble in all the wrong places.
