The second album by the 4AD collective headed by label founder Ivo Watts-Russell distills the This Mortal Coil concept somewhat. There’s more of a core group now, featuring Simon Raymonde of the Cocteau Twins, producer John Fryer, arranger Martin McCarrick, and Watts-Russell himself, backing a variety of mostly female singers. The double album is nearly half instrumentals (all of them given the traditional 4AD treatment of layers of echo, reverb, and phasing), most of which are pleasant enough but not particularly memorable. The vocal tracks, however, continue the debut’s trend of intriguing versions of fascinatingly obscure covers, ranging from Pearls Before Swine’s mysteriously beautiful “The Jeweller” (with Scott Walker-like vocals by Dominic Appleton) and Tim Buckley’s “I Must Have Been Blind” (sung by Richenel, apparently from the bottom of a very deep well) to Talking Heads’ “Drugs” (with a fiery, soulful vocal by Alison Limerick over a harsh, thumping rhythm track) and Colin Newman’s “Alone,” each of them reinterpreted in the unique This Mortal Coil style. Less focused than It’ll End in Tears, Filigree & Shadow is an uneven but often inspired follow-up. by Stewart Mason

In 2001 Billy Reeves, fresh from introducing the world to Sophie Ellis-Bextor (via their band theaudience) was smashed to bits by joyriders whilst in his Morris Minor – resulting in a two-week coma and a year in and out of hospital. In 2017 his brother gave him two mini-discs that had been saved from the wreckage, including demos of songs he had forgotten – due to crash-related amnesia.

The world has finally caught up with Slowdive. A band whose reach goes far beyond just influencing music is back, with their first new album in 22 years. The album is called “Slowdive” – self-titled in an echo of their debut EP from 1990 – and is remarkably direct. “We were always ambitious,” says frontman Neil Halstead. “Not in terms of trying to sell records, but in terms of making interesting records. Maybe, if you try and make interesting records, they’re still interesting in a few years’ time”. Now, in 2017, the record is ready and first single from which, “Star Roving,” shot to the top of the Billboard Trending 140 Chart. “There’s a different energy about it”, says drummer Simon Scott. “It took ages to get back together and write songs and for it to click in the studio, but this album doesn’t feel like a bolt-on – it’s got an energy that’s as vibrant as Souvlaki and Just for a Day. It feels very relevant to now”.

Expectations were high for Lush’s debut album. Although 1990’s Gala compilation was, for U.S. audiences especially, the first real, full-length exposure to the London band, that set brought together three very different EPs and was more a catalog of a young band’s genesis and rapid evolution. With production from the Cocteau Twins’ Robin Guthrie—who, at the time, was in the midst of his main band nearly breaking up over his substance abuse issues—and the music press hype machine swirling into overdrive about the shoegaze scene, Spooky was supposed to be a diaphanous bit of jangle-pop confection that fused together the prettiest and pushiest bits of Gala into a more cohesive form. Instead, it turned out that Guthrie rarely turned up to the recording sessions, leaving the band and two “assistant” engineers to put together an album that wound up being a coherent, complete, and current statement of who Lush was as a band. That band was a surprisingly daring one. Chordally and structurally, few of the cuts on Spooky proceed in a predictable manner. In fact, surprises abound, whether it’s when the angels-on-speed aggression of “Superblast!” collapses at its climax into a flanged-out whirlpool of weirdness or when the chiming vibrato of “Take” actually turns out to be a bit of feminist post-punk. To be sure, there’s enough gauzy guitar work and multi-tracked vocal harmony to easily warrant the album’s position at or near the top of any ranking of Best Shoegaze Albums Ever, but the prickly tension that defined Lush’s earliest recordings is still present throughout Spooky. That tension manifests on the rhythmic, staccato open chords of “Tiny Smiles” just as much as it does in the straight-ahead punkiness of “Laura” which, weirdly, is the most aggressive and the most beautiful song on the whole album. Ultimately Spooky recasts much of the “shoegazey-ness” as off-kilter individualism, rather than a de rigeur textural choice. The result is an album that managed to subvert those initial expectations while simultaneously exceeding them; it’s not only the best album in Lush’s catalog, but it ranks among one of the strongest debut albums of the ’90s. – Jason Ferguson

And now comes ‘Old Wow’, yet another dramatic change of musical direction where, for the first time, Sam includes the instrument most notably absent from his recording career, the guitar and electric guitar at that, played by the album’s producer Bernard Butler (of Suede and McAlmont & Butler fame). Sam explains, “but only because it’s played so beautifully and sensitively and you wouldn’t necessarily know it was guitar at all”. Other musicians involved include what he calls the “classic line-up” of piano (James Keay), bass (Misha Mullov-Addado) and percussion (Josh Green), along with Caoimhin Ó Raghallaigh of the acclaimed band The Gloaming (on Hardanger violin). Guest vocals are also contributed to the album with a remarkable appearance by Elizabeth Fraser of the Cocteau Twins, plus splendid harmonies from Cosmo Sheldrake and spoken word poet Dizraeli.

With the placement of Radio Caroline’s “Head Above Water” in HULU’s Cruel Summer (Season 2, Episode 6, July 3), Projekt releases this remastered edition with two never-before-heard bonus tracks.

Formed in 1986 in Champaign-Urbana, IL, Area was an enigmatic dream pop trio quickly hailed as the midwest’s answer to England’s 4AD Records. On their second release and first vinyl LP, they merged the seductive, breathy voice and lyrics of Lynn Canfield with the radiant guitar and delicate synth inventions of Henry Frayne and Steve Jones. Finding their musical footing on RADIO CAROLINE, Area explored gentle spirals of emotive, fragile moods at once sad and beautiful. “They’re almost all very personal lyrics,” noted Lynn Canfield in a 1987 interview with Italy’s Night Circle fanzine. “I’m talking about facts that happen to me on a daily basis, but it’s never planned, it’s not a conscious thing. The surest — and for me the only — way to write is to write what is definitely in you.”

Ranging from the straight-ahead rock of “Sweet Revenge” to the wistfulness and wintery “After the End” and “Crystal,” the variety of styles fits nicely with the late-80s music of the Cocteau Twins, Cowboy Junkies, Lanterna, Low, and Durutti Column.

Originally recorded on four-track and eight-track tape largely in home settings, Jones’ 2023 remaster not only cleans up the sound but also reveals nuances not heard on the original release.
