The ever-surprising Jorge Rossy! The music world discovered him as the drummer in the pianist Brad Mehldau’s trio for a decade, and with whom he contributed to profoundly reinventing the “art of the trio” in one of the most important jazz groups of the time. Yet it was initially as a trumpeter that Jorge Rossy had been admitted as a student at the celebrated Berklee College of Music in Boston a few years earlier, and which had allowed him to join the elite ranks of world-class jazz musicians. Later, after leaving Brad Mehldau’s trio and back in his native Barcelona, the decision of the Catalan to devote himself to the piano instrument which he played in various groups and recorded several albums (including the first under his own name) surprised those who expected him to capitalize on the fame acquired playing drums with the pianist. And then in 2016 he emerged once again playing a different instrument, leading from the vibes a quintet that included some of today’s most prestigious jazz musicians, of which his new album is the second avatar.

Weather Report – Tale Spinnin’ (1975) [Audio Fidelity 2016] {PS3 ISO + FLAC}

Weather Report – Tale Spinnin’ (1975/2016)
PS3 Rip | SACD ISO | DST64 2.0 >1-bit/2.8224 MHz | Full Scans 300dpi | 688 MB
FLAC 2.0 24bit/88.2 kHz | Full Scans 300dpi | 851 MB

Weather Report’s ever-changing lineup shifts again, with the somewhat heavier funk-oriented Leon “Ndugu” Chancler dropping into the drummer’s chair and Alyrio Lima taking over the percussion table. As a result, Tale Spinnin’ has a weightier feel than Mysterious Traveller, while continuing the latter’s explorations in Latin-spiced electric jazz/funk. Zawinul’s pioneering interest in what we now call world music is more in evidence with the African percussion, wordless vocals, and sandy sound effects of “Badia,” and his synthesizer sophistication is growing along with the available technology. Wayne Shorter’s work on soprano sax is more animated than on the previous two albums and Alphonso Johnson puts his melodic bass more to the fore. While not quite as inventive as its two predecessors, this remains an absorbing extension of WR’s mid-’70s direction. (more…)

Weather Report were a jazz supergroup formed in 1970, best known outside the jazz world for their hit “Birdland”. This is Weather Report’s sixth album and the first with the bass player Jaco Pastorius who features on two tracks. Black Market is an instrumental jazz fusion album. The album draws heavily from African influences and its style could be described as “world fusion”. The second song, “Cannon Ball” is tribute to Zawinul’s then recently deceased former band leader, saxophonist Julian “Cannonball” Adderley.

The first two Weather Report albums to feature Jaco (and two of their very best) were combined on to a single cassette, containing the smash hit “Birdland”. If cassette was your format, this was a great way to pick up two great albums, but it is now out of print. (more…)

Weather Report – Mysterious Traveller (1974) [Reissue 2002] {2.0 & 5.1} PS3 ISO + FLAC

PS3 Rip | ISO | SACD DST64 2.0 & 5.1 > 1-bit/2.8224 MHz | 47:55 minutes | Scans included | 2,97 GB
or FLAC 2.0 Stereo (converted with foobar2000 to tracks) 24bit/88,2 kHz | 48:05 mins | Scans included | 974 MB

Weather Report started out as a jazz equivalent of what the rock world in 1970 was calling a “supergroup.” But unlike most of the rock supergroups, this one not only kept going for a good 15 years, it more than lived up to its billing, practically defining the state of the jazz-rock art throughout almost all of its run.

Weather Report’s fourth recording finds Wayne Shorter (on soprano and tenor) taking a lesser role as Joe Zawinul begins to really dominate the group’s sound. Most selections also include bassist Alphonso Johnson and drummer Ishmael Wilburn although the personnel shifts from track to track. “Nubian Sundance” adds several vocalists while “Blackthorn Rose” is a Shorter-Zawinul duet. Overall the music is pretty stimulating and sometimes adventurous; high-quality fusion from 1974. (more…)

Ambassadeurs ‎- Best Of Ambassadeurs (1983) (FR Pressing) (24-Bit/96Khz) (Vinyl Rip)

Ambassadeurs ‎– Best Of Ambassadeurs
Vinyl | LP Cover (1:1) | FLAC | 24bit/96kHz
Label: Celluloid / CEL 6640 | FR Release: 1983 | Genre: African-Roots

In 1973 Salif Keita joined the group, Les Ambassadeurs. Keita and Les Ambassadeurs fled political unrest in Mali during the mid-1970s for Abidjan, Ivory Coast and subsequently changed the group’s name to “Les Ambassadeurs Internationaux”. The reputation of Les Ambassadeurs Internationaux rose to the international level in the 1970s, and in 1977 Keita received a National Order award from the president of Guinea, Sékou Touré.
He is the father of Paralympian athlete Nantenin Keita.
Keita moved to Paris in 1984 to reach a larger audience. His music combines traditional West African music styles with influences from both Europe and the Americas. Musical instruments that are commonly featured in Keita’s work include balafons, djembes, guitars, koras, organs, saxophones, and synthesizers. In 1990, Keita contributed “Begin the Beguine” to the Cole Porter tribute/AIDS benefit album Red Hot + Blue, produced by the Red Hot Organization.
Keita found success in Europe as one of the African stars of world music, but his work was sometimes criticised for the gloss of its production and for the occasional haphazard quality.[citation needed] However, shortly after the turn of the Millennium he returned to Bamako in Mali to live and record. His first work after going home, 2002’s Moffou was hailed as his best album in many years[citation needed], and Keita was inspired to build a recording studio in Bamako, which he used for his album M’Bemba, released in October 2005.
Guest artists on his albums have included Weather Report founders Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter, drummer Paco Sery, guitarist Carlos Santana, and percussionist Bill Summers.
Keita’s album, La Différence, was produced around the end of 2009. The work is dedicated to the struggle of the world albino community (victims of human sacrifice), for which Keita has been crusading all his life. In one of the album’s tracks, the singer calls others to understand that “difference” does not mean “bad” and to show love and compassion towards albinos like everyone else:”I am black/ my skin is white/ so I am white and my blood is black [albino]/…I love that because it is a difference that’s beautiful…”, “some of us are beautiful some are not/some are black some are white/all that difference was on purpose…for us to complete each other/let everyone get his love and dignity/the world will be beautiful.”
La Différence is unique in that for the first time Keita has clearly and boldly combined different melodic influences to produce a highly original musical feel, with a wide range of appeal[citation needed]. The album was recorded between Bamako, Beirut, Paris, and Los Angeles. This unique musical feel is reinforced by soulful pitches in the track “Samigna” emanating from the trumpet of the great Lebanese jazzman Ibrahim Maaluf.
La Difference won Keita one of the biggest musical awards of his career: the Best World Music 2010 at the Victoires de la musique.
