The title Re-Loaded: 20 #1 Hits slyly winks at Blake Shelton’s first hits collection, Loaded: The Best of Blake Shelton. Released in time for the holiday season of 2010, a lot has happened between that compilation and this 2015 collection — namely, Shelton has turned into a household name thanks to his starring role on NBC’s televised music competition The Voice (not to mention his headline-grabbing romance with Miranda Lambert), and he’s had the hits to go along with his fame. According to Billboard’s U.S. Country Airplay charts, he had precisely 12 number one hits from the three albums he’s released since Loaded and they’re all here, sequenced in reverse-chronological order beginning with “Sangria,” running through the smooth-rolling “Sure Be Cool If You Did” and the modulated rowdiness of “Boys Round Here,” and ending with “Honey Bee,” the smash that hit in 2011 just as the singer started on The Voice. Next up are his eight number ones from the 2000s — “Hillbilly Bone,” “She Wouldn’t Be Gone,” “Home,” “Some Beach,” “The Baby,” and “Austin” — finally concluding with the nicely laid-back, grooving “Gonna,” a song that underscores how Shelton easily transitioned from traditionalist to mainstream crooner. By focusing so heavily on his 2010s, the rest of Reloaded also emphasizes this shift, and leaves behind many of the great, brawnier singles he had from the 2000s, but that’s a fair trade-off: not only will this collection appeal to 2010s converts, it is true to who Shelton is in 2015. – Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Loaded: The Best of Blake Shelton, is a solid collection of the country singer’s singles, hits, and favorites from his five studio full-lengths, and the two six-track EPs he released in the latter year. Fifteen tracks deep, it begins with the two cuts that put him on contemporary country’s radar — “Ol Red” and “Austin” — from his self-titled debut album in 2001. The Dreamer, from 2003, is represented by the its two best cuts, “The Baby,” and the classic “Playboys of the Southwestern World.” There are three from 2004’s Blake Shelton’s Bar & Grill, including Shawn Camp’s stellar “Nobody But Me,” and Shelton’s reading of the Conway Twitty smash “Goodbye Time.” Pure BS, from 2007, is showcased by a pair of numbers, including “The More I Drink” and a third, “Home,” comes from the deluxe edition of album. There’s a solid version of “She Wouldn’t Be Gone” from 2008’s Startin’ Fires to round things out. The first 11 tracks were a given, and Shelton’s annotations in the booklet make a solid case for their inclusion. That said, Shelton also tacks on the title track from the Hillbilly Bone, “Six Pack,” as well as “Kiss My Country Ass” from the same set. Further, “Who Are You When I’m Not Looking” and the title track from the second EP are here. All four of these songs were released earlier in the calendar year, making their appearances seem redundant at best and, frankly, like a cynical money grab at worst. Oftentimes, less really is more. – Thom Jurek

In 1988 New Jersey spent 4 straight weeks at No. 1 in the U.S. and spawned five Top 10 singles (“Bad Medicine;” “Born To Be My Baby;” “I’ll Be There For You;” “Living In Sin;” and “Lay Your Hands On Me,” – the only rock album ever with that many Top 10 hits. The album is multi-platinum in the U.S. and has sold more than 10 million copies worldwide.

Bon Jovi originally envisioned the New Jersey project as a double-LP, using the working title Sons Of Beaches. But in the end, Mercury Records released the album as a 12-track single LP and the band renamed it simply New Jersey, in honor of their home state. With this Deluxe edition, the New Jersey originally imagined by Bon Jovi can finally be shared with fans.

The 2-disc Deluxe Edition first disc includes the remastered original album, plus three bonus tracks. The second disc features the 13 Sons Of Beaches demos from the New Jersey recording sessions, remixed exclusively for this project.

Lana Del Rey – Honeymoon (2015) [Official Digital Download 24bit/44,1kHz]

Call Honeymoon the third installment in a trilogy if you will but there’s no indication Lana Del Rey will put her doomed diva persona to rest after this album. Over the course of three albums, Lana Del Rey hasn’t so much expanded her delicately sculpted persona as she has refined it, removing anything extraneous to her exquisite ennui. Honeymoon doesn’t drift or float, it marks time, sometimes swelling with a suggestion of impending melodrama but often deflating to just an innervated pulse. Apart from the syncopated chorus on “High on the Beach,” any lingering element of the hip-hop affectations of Born to Die have been banished and so have the shade and light Dan Auerbach brought to Ultraviolence, a record that feels cinematic in comparison to Honeymoon. What’s left behind is the essence of Lana Del Rey: iconic images of days of Los Angeles passed, all plasticized and stylized, functioning as lighthouses in stoned, sad daydreams. Mood reigns over all on Honeymoon – melodies and tempos certainly aren’t prioritized over feel; all the originals are purposefully languid, which is partially why the Nancy Sinatra sample on “Terrence Loves You” and “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood,” a cover allegedly in the vein of Nina Simone’s original but bearing an organ out of the Animals, stick – but underneath the dragging beats and austere arrangements, there’s something approaching triumph. Where Lana Del Rey seemed weighted down by existential sorrow on her first two albums, Honeymoon seems comfortingly melancholic and that’s the truest sign that it is the fullest execution of Lana Del Rey’s grand plan yet.

Chicago – Chicago V (2002) [DVD-Audio ISO]

Chicago – Chicago V
Artist: Chicago | Album: Chicago V | Style: Rock | Year: 2002 [1972 original] | Quality: DVD-Audio (MLP 5.1 96kHz/24Bit, MLP 2.0 192kHz/24Bit, Dolby AC3 5.1) | Bitrate: lossless | Tracks: 11 | Size: ~5.43 Gb | Recovery: 5% | Covers: in archive | Release: Rhino | Warner (8122 73842-9), 2003 | Note: Watermarked

With four gold multi-disc LPs and twice as many hit singles to its credit, Chicago issued its fifth effort, the first to clock in at under an hour. What they lack in quantity, they more than make up for in the wide range of quality of material. The disc erupts with the progressive free-form “A Hit by Varese” — which seems to have been inspired as much by Emerson, Lake & Palmer’s Tarkus (1971) or Yes circa Close to the Edge (1972) as by the Parisian composer for whom it is named. Fully 80 percent of the material on Chicago V (1972) is also a spotlight for the prolific songwriting of Robert Lamm (keyboards/vocals). In addition to penning the opening rocker, he is also responsible for the easy and airy “All Is Well,” which is particularly notable for its lush Beach Boys-esque harmonies. However, Lamm’s most memorable contributions are undoubtedly the Top Ten sunshine power pop anthem “Saturday in the Park” and the equally upbeat and buoyant “Dialogue, Pt. 1” and “Dialogue, Pt. 2.” Those more accessible tracks are contrasted by James Pankow’s (trombone/percussion) aggressive jazz fusion “Now That You’ve Gone.” Although somewhat dark and brooding, it recalls the bittersweet “So Much to Say, So Much to Give” and “Anxiety’s Moment” movements of “Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon” found on Chicago II.

Jane’s Addiction may not have been a strict metal band, but their music was certainly full of traits inherent to metal substances: hard, gleaming, powerful. On „Nothing’s Shocking“, which captured the much too short-lived quartet at its very peak, they were a blazing metallic supernova–grooving up a streak across the sky one moment, setting off heavy rhythmic discharges the next. Feeding off radically diverse musical elements–from art and classic rock, to hard-core punk and funk–Jane’s Addiction was the last great precursor to the alternative revolution of 1991-92. Simultaneously, they were the sole inheritors of Led Zeppelin’s mantra to make a different kind of sprawling heavy rock, and that they did in spades.
