Throughout the 70’s and into the 80’s, pianist/composer Stu Goldberg was a major force on the international jazz scene, performing alongside such legendary fusionists as the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Al DiMeola, and Freddie Hubbard. This solo piano outing was the second of four albums Goldberg recorded for MPS. Berliner Morgenpost critic Dieter Gruenfeld best sums up the music: “…Goldberg strokes the keys as tenderly as Cezanne paints pastel colors on a canvas…his compositions showcase a talented visionary musician with great technique who creates his own universe…” The title piece begins sedately before taking off in a whirlwind of emotive hues. The introspective intro to The Core of the Apple explodes into a virtuoso performance and Stu’s impression of a certain metropolis. Goldberg’s Baiao (also on his MPS Live album) shifts between the country music of northern Brazil and classical influences, inflecting an intense contrapuntal pulse throughout. Dedication begins with a sensitive intro before moving into a frenetic, dancing 6/8 section as the music shifts back and forth between somber andante motifs and fiery intensity. On Jazz Hanon 4-8-4, Goldberg expands on his former teacher, Jerry Gray’s virtuoso jazz piano exercises, and Goldberg’s Homage à J.S. Bach is a modernist bow to the classical master. Goldberg takes on the Charlie Parker jazz classic Donna Lee at blistering speed, moving back and forth through jazz history with quotes from Indiana, skewed stride rhythms and futuristic melodic/harmonic forays. A stellar virtuoso performance throughout.

In the decade between the mid 1970’s and 80’s, American pianist/composer Stu Goldberg was a major force on the world jazz scene, working with the likes of John McLaughlin’s Mahavishnu Orchestra, Wayne Shorter, and Freddie Hubbard before moving to Los Angeles in 1985 to pursue an award-winning career composing for films. Goldberg calls this landmark 1981 MPS album “one of my most favorite albums”. He had worked with versatile drummer Dave Crigger in the legendary Don Ellis Orchestra. Stu says of Crigger, “He could burn it up in any meter.” Bassist Jimmy Lacefield and Crigger had worked together in the jazz/classical group Free Flight, and Stu and conga player Lee Pastora had worked together in Al Di Meola’s first band. Stu’s brother, saxophonist Kenny Goldberg debuts on this album. Add a string quartet of crack LA studio musicians to the mix, and you have a combination that gave Stu a “broader sonic palette, while still allowing for extended improvisation.” The album begins in quintet with the funky Eye of the Beholder and moves on to New Love, featuring the strings’ romantic background along with Lacefield’s standout bass solo. Song Burst opens in a similar romantic feel before surging into a rollicking rock-influenced deluge with a freewheeling modal piano solo. After a meditative piano intro, Daybreak, Sunbeam gradually expands upward with a rich underlay of strings and the warm tenor melody before moving into bright, hard swinging jazz with brilliant solos by Stu and Jimmy, as well as some dazzling trading between drums and piano. Played as a solo piano piece, Daybreak centers on the meditative melodic intro of the previous piece, and Montreal ends the album as it began, in quintet. The piece has a Latin feel gone North, with brother Kenny taking solo honors on flute. An album in which Goldberg stylishly mixes funk, jazz, and a tinge of the modern classics into a picturesque masterwork.

On their third EP, 2018’s Black Out the Sky, punk stalwarts Strung Out veered down a surprisingly mature path to celebrate their 30th anniversary. Forgoing the aggressive punk blasts and metallic riffs that were parts of their sound for decades, the band decided to unplug, presenting six new acoustic songs alongside a pair of reworked early-era cuts. Produced by Kyle Black, Black Out retains the catchiness and melody of the band’s core spirit, albeit with much less bite. Without that full assault, the songs stand tall on their own, with a rawness and powerful purity that occasionally drifts into bleeding emo territory. The new songs vary in their execution, from the sweet ditty “Town of Corazon” to the bouncy jaunt “Duke of Sorrow,” and from the urgency of “The Architect” to the sunshiny sweep of “Presidio.” The heaviest offering on Black Out is “Requiem,” which descends into a flurry of screams and drums at its close. Longtime fans will notice the acoustic versions of deep cuts “Unkoil” (from 2002’s An American Paradox) and “Matchbook” (from 1998’s Twisted by Design), two bites of nostalgia given new life. While a short play, the eight tracks on Black Out the Sky are satisfyingly fresh, a quick nod to Strung Out’s past and enticing evidence of future possibilities.

Although The Rite of Spring ballet caused a near riot at its Paris premiere and assured Igor Stravinsky a place in the pantheon of artistic enfants terribles, it was the earlier ballet, The Firebird, that catapulted him to stardom in the classical world. On this new Reference Recordings CD by Eiji Oue and the Minnesota Orchestra, we have performances of both the earlier ballets, as well as a performance of the later symphonic poem The Song of the Nightingale. All three pieces could not be more disparate in style, and are far removed from Stravinsky’s seminal works in neo-classical style and his post-modern flirtation with serialism.

The Minnesota Orchestra, at least on this sojourn, are in excellent young hands. Eiji Oue, a Bernstein protégé and Tanglewood alumnus, makes an auspicious recorded debut. His control of all three ballets is exemplary and allows Stravinsky’s fantastical ideas to shine at every opportunity. The orchestra play these fiendishly difficult scores with apparent ease. All departments of the orchestra are first class with a special mention going to the woodwinds. Each principal from the orchestra plays with great character and an undeniably beautiful sound that one associates with only the finest players.

Over the last three decades, The String Cheese Incident have built a wildly devoted following on the strength of their kaleidoscopic musicality and commitment to leaving audiences ecstatically awestruck. Known for an electrifying and immersive live show that continually pushes into unexpected terrain, the Colorado-bred six-piece handles everything from bluegrass to dubstep to psychedelia with equal parts abandon and ingenuity—a feat that’s found them sharing stages with such wide-ranging artists as Lauryn Hill, Skrillex, James Brown, Billy Strings, Perry Farrell, Sheryl Crow, Zac Brown Band, and more. But in a bold departure for the band—Bill Nershi (guitar, vocals), Michael Kang (guitar, mandolin, violin, vocals), Keith Moseley (bass, vocals), Michael Travis (drums, vocals), Kyle Hollingsworth (keys, vocals), and Jason Hann (percussion, programming) —SCI’s eighth studio album trades all that mind-bending genre- hopping for a sublimely stripped-back form of folk-rock. Arriving as the band gets set to celebrate its 30th anniversary, Lend Me A Hand showcases the full depth and character of their songwriting like never before, ultimately delivering some of their most intimate and emotionally potent material to date.
