Give the People What They Want is the eighteenth studio album by the English rock group, The Kinks. It was released in August 1981 in the US, but was delayed until January 1982 in Europe. It was delayed because Ray Davies wanted to produce a full length video for the album, but financing fell through. Also scrapped were plans to remix the album for the European market. The album was initially aimed to be a statement on the media.

The Kink Kontroversy was a considerable leap forward in terms of quality, but it pales next to Face to Face, one of the finest collections of pop songs released during the ’60s. Conceived as a loose concept album, Face to Face sees Ray Davies’ fascination with English class and social structures flourish, as he creates a number of vivid character portraits. Davies’ growth as a lyricist coincided with the Kinks’ musical growth. Face to Face is filled with wonderful moments, whether it’s the mocking Hawaiian guitars of the rocker “Holiday in Waikiki,” the droning Eastern touches of “Fancy,” the music hall shuffle of “Dandy,” or the lazily rolling “Sunny Afternoon.” And that only scratches the surface of the riches of Face to Face, which offers other classics like “Rosy Won’t You Please Come Home,” “Party Line,” “Too Much on My Mind,” “Rainy Day in June,” and “Most Exclusive Residence for Sale,” making the record one of the most distinctive and accomplished albums of its time.

Released in 1976, just as the Kinks ended their notoriously uneven tenure at RCA, The Kinks’ Greatest: Celluloid Heroes is a summary of their time at the label. Since they didn’t have many genuine hits while at RCA, this winds up being a haphazard sampling of concept albums. Occasionally, an album is accurately represented. For instance, the selections from Muswell Hillbilles are perfect, but considering that nearly half this compilation leans on that terrific record, they would have to be. Apart from that album, the selection is decidedly hit and miss. It isn’t that singles are missing – their lone British hit from this time, “Supersonic Rocket Ship,” is nowhere to be found – or that albums are overlooked (no Schoolboys in Disgrace), it’s that highlights like “Here Comes Yet Another Day” and “Sweet Lady Genevieve” are left on their original albums.  ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

HighRes-ReMaster of this 1969 album from the iconic British Rock band led by brothers Ray and Dave Davies. “Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire)” is the seventh studio album by The Kinks, released in October 1969. Kinks frontman Ray Davies constructed the concept album as the soundtrack to a Granada Television play and developed the storyline with novelist Julian Mitchell; however, the television programme was cancelled and never produced. The rough plot revolved around Arthur Morgan, a carpet-layer, who was based on Ray Davies’ brother-in-law Arthur Anning.

The King’s Men, Cambridge – Twelve Days of Christmas (2016) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 46:29 minutes | 885 MB | Genre: Classical
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Kings College Cambridge

The King’s Men is the close-harmony vocal group formed by the current choral scholars of King’s College, Cambridge.

Following on from the success of their 2014 release, ‘After Hours’, which topped the iTunes Classical Charts in June 2014, for their latest album on the college’s own label, the King’s Men showcase the lighter side of their seasonal repertoire, performing a mixture of Christmas tunes you won’t be hearing in ‘Nine Lessons and Carols’ any time soon.

Highlights include traditional favourites such as “Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer” alongside Pat Dunachie (now first alto in the King’s Singers) channelling Mariah Carey on “All I want for Christmas is You” and Keith Robert’s jocular arrangement of “12 Days of Christmas”.

Unlike many close-harmony groups, the King’s Men record together, balancing their voices acoustically instead of tracking each voice individually. What this approach sacrifices in precision, it more than makes up for in musical cohesion. Whether you’re dreaming of a white Christmas, drowning in Christmas cards, waiting to catch a glimpse of Rudolph’s red nose or simply wondering when all of those lords will stop a-leaping all over your lawn, this is an essential addition to your Christmas playlist.

The King’s Men ensemble have appeared on prime-time television, including BBC’s The One Show and regularly promote their releases in-store and online. Trailers for their previous release, ‘After Hours’, have proved incredibly popular, receiving over 40,000 views on their YouTube channel, and ‘Twelve Days of Christmas’ will receive similarly strong support.

This year, have an a cappella Valentine’s Day with Love From King’s, the new album from The King’s Men close-harmony group. Curl up with your special one and enjoy these beautiful new arrangements of romantic pop & jazz favourites, featuring classic tracks by Adele, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Simon & Garfunkel, Michael Bublé and more. The King’s Men is made up of singers from the Choir of King’s College, Cambridge and and nine of the fourteen arrangements on this album were written specially for this recording by current and former members of the group. Unlike many close-harmony groups, The King’s Men record most of the tracks together in a natural acoustic, instead of tracking each voice separately in a studio. This results in stronger musical cohesion and a more authentic sound. Highlights of Love from King’s include Steve Whitford’s performance of Louis Armstrong’s Wonderful World, as well as the specially composed I Carry Your Heart for which there is a live video from the annual Singing on the River concert. This release joins the other critically-acclaimed titles from The King’s Men, including Twelve Days of Christmas, and After Hours which reached #1 in the iTunes Classical Charts.

Influenced by the Specials, Public Enemy, and the Clash, London collective the King Blues combine folk-punk, Two-Tone, and dub reggae with overtly political lyrical themes on a sound self-described as “conscious rude boy ska.” The band originally formed as a duo in 2004 before vocalist/ukulele player Jonny “Itch” Fox, and guitarist Jamie Jazz decided to expand their sound, recording with a number of various musicians before settling on the permanent lineup of guitarist Dean Ashton, bassist Kat Marsh, keyboardist Josie Dobson, and drummer Jack “Percusher” Usher. In 2005, they released their debut EP, All Fall Down, which was later followed by their 2006 full-length album, Under the Fog. After signing with Island subsidiary Field Recordings, it was reissued a year later, and following support from influential Radio 1 DJs Zane Lowe and Mike Davies, they scored a couple of minor hits from their follow-up, Save the World, Get the Girl (“Headbutt” and the title track) in 2008. A Live Lounge cover of Dizzee Rascal’s “Bonkers,” which they regularly played in their live set, became their most famous recording, and in 2011, they released their third LP, Punk and Poetry, through indie label Transmission. At the beginning of 2012, the band headed to California to record with producer John Feldmann (The Used, Good Charlotte) for what would become their third album. Releasing a statement in April 2012, the band announced they had decided to go their separate ways, with the album Long Live the Struggle becoming the final chapter of their recorded output.

The songs are extremely personal and cover a spectrum of emotions in connection to growing up in a rural setting. One track features a collaboration with Phoebe Bridgers. ‘C’est La Vie’ adds more of a lilt and carefree bounce to the cosmic Americana sound and feel of ‘Imploding The Mirage’, but finds frontman Brandon Flowers in his full vividly poetic flow as he sings “it’s not about how you get lost, it’s what you do to find the trail, sometimes you’re Ahab, and sometimes you’re the whale“.

The new song comes from the sessions for their last album, which today receives the deluxe edition treatment and now comes with added stripped down versions of the singles ‘Blowback’ and ‘Caution’ – performed with one acoustic and the other in ‘Wasatch Style’, respectively. There’s a battle raging inside Brandon Flowers. For years, the Killers frontman has played dual lead roles: the boisterous, cocksure heartthrob at the helm of one of the biggest rock bands of the 21st century, and the yearning, spiritual nomad with an eye toward eternity. “There’s sort of been a tug of war in my soul for my whole life with that,” Flowers says over the phone from his home in Park City, Utah. “I think being raised a Mormon in Las Vegas had a lot to do with that.”
