The Lemon Twigs emerged in 2016 with their debut LP, Do Hollywood, which was praised by Rolling Stone for its toting hooky songs that stand out for their intricate arrangements and delectable melodies and NPR Music who mused, like listening to music from a time that never was, a baroque rock romp. Their second album, Go To School is their most ambitious work yet; a conceptual musical, conceived by brothers Brian and Michael D Addario, which tells a heartbreaking coming of age story of Shane, a pure of heart chimpanzee raised as a human boy as he comes to terms with the obstacles of life. Todd Rundgren and their real-life mother Susan Hall play Shane s parents. The album also features contributions from Jody Stephens (Big Star), Natalie Mering (Weyes Blood) and their father Ronnie D Addario.

Normally we try to avoid audience recordings as, all too often, those in front of the stage can come across as being louder than the band ON the stage. Back in 1993, at the rather beautiful old Trocadero Theatre, the audience did their best to triumph in the loudness battle so this release is far from being sonically perfect. However, there’s a quality to the playing and a certain clarity that earns it a place on this page. It’s a transitional set of songs too, featuring a few rarities. Just turn it up and step right inside, but PLEASE …do be quiet!

Originally released in 1986 as the natural successor to “The Tower”.The focus, although framed by 80s reality, was set on a truly desolate, Dystopian future with a conclusion so bleak in the “Our Lady “ trilogy, that the band penned “ The Guardians of Eden” for the sake of their own sanity. Ironically, the irreverent pop song “ Curious Guy” emerged from the same sessions. Remastered in 2020 by Ray Steeg and Peter Van Vliet.

“Curse” was intended as the Pink Dots’ first official album, but a surprise request from a label to release the cassette album “ Brighter Now” on vinyl meant the proposed debut was delayed for a year. In the interim, many new songs were recorded, the line-up of the band changed and the entire complexion of the album changed drastically. It remains a strong favourite within the Dots’ community to this day.

Essentially an album for the historians and completists. These recordings from a park in Rotterdam (Parkzicht) have been floating around the World Wide Web for some time, but never as a complete show. This offering fills in the gaps and completes the puzzle. Tracks 1-3 are taken from the VPRO Radio recording of the show, while the rest was never broadcasted in full. “They Don’t Horses..” did appear on a compilation cassette many years ago (Recloose Live Series Number 1), but this is almost impossible to find. Sound quality has been worked on extensively – a big thank you to Raymond Steeg who did a great job on cutting out unwanted noises.

The 1990s was a tumultuous decade. The World order we all thought was set in stone had become an illusion, and economies collapsed, horrendous new wars bubbled up and I just remember this feeling of continuous ominous uncertainty.

You always remember exactly where you were when a World changing event occurs.
September 11, 2001. I felt good after writing and recording a song entitled “The Warden” and decided to treat myself to a small break by listening to the news on the radio. I tuned in as the second plane crashed into the twin towers in far-off New York…

Chicago has unearthed some monumental bands over the years. Within the windy city, there was a resurgence of acts which altered the landscape of modern punk rock. These outfits include Rise Against and dark princes of punk Alkaline Trio. Both of these music stalwarts have popularised punk in a way where it is more accessible and relevant. Also under that umbrella, are The Lawrence Arms – pushing punk in different, conceptual directions, spearheading small revolutions in a scene covered in blood, sweat and tears.

The Lawrence Arms formed in Chicago in 1999, and members Brendan Kelly (vocals/bassist), Chris McCaughan (vocals/guitar), and Neil Hennessey (drummer) have released five studio albums to date. Their sixth album and first with Epitaph, Metropole, captures “that alone-in-a-crowd, stranger-in-a-strange-land kind of shit—a feeling of such weird solitude that you don’t even know what’s up and what’s down ‘cause you’re so caught in the wake of the city,” according to Kelly.

Listen to ‘Impressions’ and dive into a kaleidoscope of sonorities coming from the wide-open vision of musical concepts of the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble. For more than thirty years, the group has carried the American tradition of percussive jazz onward from a distinctly African-Chicago-American perspective. Founded in 1973 by percussionist Kahil El’Zabar, this, their second album and first for Red Records (1982), is a much sought-after LP by collectors, with second-hand copies changing hands at incredibly high prices.
Now reissued as a special edition of just five hundred numbered copies, this cult masterpiece will be snapped up in a trice.
Henry ‘Light’ Huff: soprano saxophone, harp, percussions
Ed Wilkerson: tenor saxophone, woodwinds, piano
Kahil El’zabar: drums, percussions
Recorded in Bologna, Italy, June 1981.
Restoration and digital transfer from original analogue tapes. Remastered by Rinaldo Donati.

Hester’s rare late-’50s debut album is a sedate, if quite prettily sung, traditional folk record. Even more so than Hester’s self-titled early-’60s album for Tradition, this has a reverent recital quality in the John Jacob Niles school that, while admirable in its purity, is also kind of sterile. (Niles is in fact credited with three of the adaptations here, including the famous “Black Is the Color of My True Love’s Hair.”) Whether or not Joan Baez was influenced by this specific record, Hester’s high voice and pristine execution certainly foreshadow the kind of recordings made by several high-voiced woman folksingers (Baez, Judy Collins, and others) in the early-’60s folk revival. There’s also a much fainter foreshadowing of folk-rock in the presence of Jerry Allison, drummer for Buddy Holly & the Crickets, who plays brushes on a cardboard box on “The Wreck of the Old Ninety-Seven.” Too, Holly producer Norman Petty nabs the co-credit for the adaptation of “Hush-A-Bye.”
