The world has changed a lot since 1992, when Don Breithaupt first collected an album’s worth of his irresistibly hooky and jazzy pop songs and formed Monkey House. Since then, the talented and prolific Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, composer, arranger, and producer has stamped the band’s Kurt Vonnegut-inspired moniker on five albums of original material, including Headquarters (2012), Left (2016) and Friday (2019), the latter a blazing tour de force which topped the iTunes jazz chart and went to #11 on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Albums chart. Now, to mark their thirtieth anniversary, Monkey House presents their most accomplished and exciting set yet, Remember The Audio, on which Breithaupt is joined by his A-List wrecking crew of Mark Kelso on drums, Pat Kilbride on bass, Justin Abedin on guitar, and guests including trumpeters Randy Brecker, Guido Basso and Michael Leonhart, guitarist Drew Zingg, and singers Lucy Woodward and David Blamires. After years of fluid lineups, Breithaupt says he had an epiphany back in 2011 while rounding up the usual suspects to make Headquarters: Hey, wouldn’t it be nice if this coalesced into a steady band? Breithaupt got more than just a band: Monkey House is a crack team of virtuosos playing in sync and in service to his instantly hummable songs. Like the last three Monkey House albums, Remember The Audio was produced by Peter Cardinali and Breithaupt. Breithaupt had already written most of the music on Remember The Audio pre-COVID, but he figures at least half of the lyrics were written in the spring of 2020, after the world shut down. That’s why the only cover on the album, Mose Allison’s ‘Ever Since The World Ended’ fit right in. I thought it would be a good coda for the album because it’s fatalistic, but it’s also really funny and not too heavy. Remember The Audio is sophisticated pop for now people, and a new high-water mark in Monkey House’s musical journey.

While one might wish that cellist Michal Kanka had a more robust tone, one could not wish for a more sensitive tone. While one might wish that pianist Ivan Klansky had a more distinct touch, one could not wish for a more sympathetic accompanist. And while one might wish that their performances of both Brahms’ cello sonatas, plus a transcription of his Sonatensatz in C minor, were more recklessly virtuosic, one could not wish for warmer, more lyrical, more soulful performances. It could be that Kanka and Klansky’s don’t have the chops for Brahms’ vigorous writing, but it seems more likely that they’re simply going with their hearts. Listen to their Sonatensatz: their central section flows like the milk of human kindness, but their outer sections are desultory, enervated, and weak. While their performances are so sincere that one cannot help but be moved by them, they are still so listless that one grows ever so slightly bored with them. Praga’s super audio digital sound is cloudy and damp.

One of the most prolific female composers of the 19th century, Fanny Hensel was also a pianist of rare talent and prodigious memory who dazzled private audiences at her concert series in her Berlin home. During her lifetime, Hensel’s career was overshadowed by the career of her brother, Felix Mendelssohn. She received much the same liberal education in the arts as Felix, and demonstrated hardly less talent than him as a musician, a linguist and an artist in her early years. Hensel’s music reflects her deep reverence for Bach and Beethoven, but it also exhibits the fine craftsmanship and lyricism associated with her brother’s music, and her own experimental and inventive approach to form and content. She allowed her music to be published only in the year before her early death at the age of 41 – which foreshadowed and probably hastened her brother’s demise – though in fact several of her pieces had already appeared in print under her brother’s name.

“The music should drive the play” – that is the top priority in his workshop. Markus Zwink has been musical director and conductor for four Passion Play decades. During this time, he has increasingly acted as composer; when there is a need for text, he is also replacing the librettist for the first time for 2022. That wasn’t always the case: “I can still remember how I rewrote a transition in a musical number in 1990. Eight bars only, but I had real qualms about it, it was all so sacred and so predetermined and so determined.” But a change had to come – that was already clear to him ten years earlier. In the 1980 play, Markus Zwink is the bass soloist, Christian Stückl sings in the chorus – “and we both thought that it couldn’t really go on like that, because it just felt like a repetition of 1970, 1960, 1950”. Six years later, there was an “almost landslide turnaround” – and finally the opportunity to take action himself.

The track Tab was originally released back in 1988 on the demo ‘Forget About Life, I’m High On Dope’. This is a 2021 mix of the original demo. with both tracks being over 24 minutes each. It’s viewed as an influential track with psychedelic / heavy psych / space rock and stoner rock fans and will sit nicely alongside Sleep’s ‘Dopesmoker’.
Julian Cope described the original release as distilling Hawkwind, Sabbath and The Stooges into a lysergic soup of brown acid and bathtub meth, and ultimately cultivating a “Altamont vibe”; that is, the negative end of the psychedelic spectrum.
