Even from the globalized world’s point of view in the year 2017: whenever you listen to recordings J.E.Berendt initiated in the ’60s you are completely amazed about his visionary character. This is THE landmark album which showcases his explorations. Mani Neumeier, the incomparable drum wizard of Guru Guru fame, convinced Berendt to get the Jazz meets India idea into shape by engaging the Irène Schweizer Trio (which also featured bassist Uli Trepte) and calling in an Indian trio, with sitar player Dewan Motihar, responsible for arousing the Beatles’ interest in India. In-between: German trumpet player Manfred Schoof and French saxophonist Barney Wilen. Jazz meets India is a stunning set in which it is a natural course of action that every musician respects and listens to each other – and we dare to say a more sincere approach to Indian music than many of the half-hearted world music blendings of nowadays. LeGrand Mellon is an American actress who guested as ‘Miranda’ in the mid-60s TV show, the spy/western hybrid The Wild Wild West starring Robert Conrad and Ross Martin. Marketed as a young but accomplished siren to rival contemporaries like Nancy Sinatra and Ann-Margret, LeGrand Mellon was seemingly plucked from the stage lot and dropped into the recording studio for a trio of singles for Columbia Records. “Baby Please Don’t Go” / “Summertime” was the final release after “Everybody But Me” / “Growin’ My Own” and “Move It On Over” / “The Sound Of The Blues”. The final recording by legendary jazz fusion pioneers Larry Coryell and Alphonse Mouton in the reformed the Eleventh House in their all new album Seven Secrets. The late guitarist Coryell assembled founding members Randy Brecker (trumpet), long-timer John Lee (bass), the addition of son Julian (guitar) and the late Alphonse Mouzon (drums) to bring the rock and funk back to jazz again with a batch of eleven powerhouse tracks. The album is truly a group effort with Coryell relying on each member to contribute compositions to the new album, like he did back in the 70s.

The Eleventh House was an important jazz fusion group of the 1970s, led by the guitarist Larry Coryell. The band was formed in 1973 and disbanded in 1976. The Eleventh House, alongside bands such as The Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report and Return to Forever, is considered as one of the pioneering jazz rock bands of the mid-1970s.

Joe Feeney was an American tenor singer who was a member of The Lawrence Welk Show television program. From 1957 to 1982, when the Welk show ended production, Feeney was the program’s featured Irish tenor. Among his selection of musical numbers that were popular with the Welk audience were Danny Boy, Galway Bay, Sweet Leilani and the Mario Lanza classic “Be My Love”. He also has the distinction of singing for five US Presidents and performed at Carnegie Hall three times; in 1975 he sang for Pope Paul VI at the canonization of Mother Seton, the first native-born American saint.

All but one selection (“Blue”) from thisbig-band album has been reissued on CD. J.J. Johnson, the main soloist throughout on trombone, also contributed all the compositions and arrangements for the 13- and 14-piece bands heard on the three sessions. There are short spots for some of the other players, particularly pianist Hank Jones, but the emphasis is on the arranged ensembles, making this project an excellent example of Johnson’s often-overlooked writing talents.

Herb Alpert turned to jazz’s Shorty Rogers — then toiling in the L.A. film and TV studios — for voice and string arrangements on his Christmas album, and Rogers in turn went all out for schmaltz. Rogers’ cooing voices introduce several of the tunes, whereupon the Tijuana Brass do their mostly unrelated Ameriachi thing familiar from past albums. Indeed, “Las Mananitas” seems to have been lifted from an obscure B-side of a 45 and overdubbed with the Rogers treatment. Jingling bells is a recurring song theme — first with “Jingle Bells,” then the cloying “The Bell That Couldn’t Jingle,” and ultimately “Jingle Bell Rock.” For the first time in a long time, Alpert’s sense of pacing occasionally goes awry; “My Favorite Things” nearly comes apart in the silences and piano/vocal interlude between the TJB grooves, and “Sleigh Ride” screeches to a dead halt. And yet time and further exposure has revealed this record’s homey charms, which no doubt is one reason why it continues to be available on CD where other TJB best-sellers have fallen by the wayside. –AllMusic Review by Richard S.
