“In the history of music, many are the noteworthy composers who long remained neglected and unrecognized, or whose œuvre has been reduced to misleading clichés. Lyapunov counts among them. Her pianistic virtuosity and inspired playing make us the living witnesses of the transcendental experience so dear to Liszt: they encourage elevation. Let us listen unbiased to a work that remains one of the prodigious cycles of piano literature.”

Intense, surprising, singing, dancing music… with resolutely jazz sounds, sometimes blowing winds from Africa and elsewhere. An aerial music, when crystalline harmonies entwine caressing melodies. Terran, when wild rhythms express a daring thirst for freedom.

Trinidad-born, Julliard-trained trumpet player and composer Etienne Charles was fascinated by Jab Molassie, the blue, fire-breathing carnival characters, and the people who become them for Carnival. He went to the village of Paramin on Carnival Monday, to watch them compete–only to dive in and start playing the biscuit tin along with them, getting himself splattered with blue paint.

Playing jazz that’s “out” (meaning futuristic in a myriad of ways) is stylish and wins the respect of adventurous listeners. And yet it’s also foolish to ignore artistic vision that’s rooted in the wisdom of music history. After nearly two decades in The Bad Plus, Ethan Iverson left to pursue solo ventures like this quartet date recorded live in January 2017 at the Village Vanguard with the trumpeter Tom Harrell aboard. While there is little either cannot do musically—The Bad Plus has recorded covers from unlikely rock sources like Nirvana and Bowie while Harrell has shown interest in hip hop—here they settle into the well-worn groove of jazz standards with especially satisfying results.

A vibrant big band production, Bud Powell in the 21st Century finds pianist Ethan Iverson in joyous celebration of the legendary bebop pianist with Italy’s Umbria Jazz Orchestra. One of the prime architects of bebop and modern jazz, Powell lived a troubled life and his musical contributions are often overshadowed by the addiction, racial prejudice, and mental illness he suffered. A boundary-pushing artist in his own right, Iverson shines a light on Powell’s music, reinterpreting many of the pianist’s classic compositions, as well as drawing inspiration for his own inventive originals. Although best known for his work as a founding member of the genre-bending trio the Bad Plus, Iverson is also well-versed in the acoustic jazz tradition and has collaborated on projects with many of his idols, including Billy Hart, Ron Carter, and Albert “Tootie” Heath. Since parting ways with the Bad Plus in 2017, Iverson has continued to delve into his love of acoustic post-bop, recording albums with Mark Turner and Tom Harrell, all of which reinforces his reputation as an improviser with one ear in the past and one firmly attuned to jazz’s future. It’s just this sort of balance he strikes on Bud Powell in the 21st Century. Interestingly, although Iverson designed the album as a big band session, he drew his primary inspiration from Powell’s classic 1949 small-group recordings featuring saxophonist Sonny Rollins, trumpeter Fats Navarro, bassist Tommy Potter, and drummer Roy Haynes. To help him achieve this sound, he put together his own adept quintet with trumpeter Ingrid Jensen, saxophonist Dayna Stephens, bassist Ben Street, and drummer Lewis Nash. Together, they bring their adventurous and progressive skills to bear throughout. At the top of the album is a two-part Iverson composition, “Bud Powell in the 21st Century 1: Chorale” and “Bud Powell in the 21st Century 2: Continuity.” Harmonically lush arrangements, these songs, as with much of Iverson’s work here, strike a balance between the acoustic modernism of artists like Dizzy Gillespie in the ’40s and the more avant-garde approach of artists like Charlie Haden in the ’70s. It’s a bold combination and one that allows Iverson to mix lyrical harmonies with extended sections of probing, avant-garde vamp-style improvisations. What follows are equally vivid takes on such Powell standards as “Bouncing with Bud,” “Dance of the Infidels,” and “Wail,” as well as a particularly burning rendition of Thelonious Monk’s “52nd Street Theme.” Particularly engaging is “Nobile Paradiso,” a languid Iverson original that conjures the smoky, urbane jazz clubs of the 1940s in which Powell and his bebop contemporaries developed their sound. While it’s almost taken for granted that Powell’s music was key in the development of modern jazz, it still sounds as ear-poppingly fresh, especially when played with the passion and inspiration that Iverson does here. – Matt Collar

Ethan Gruska – Slowmotionary (2017) [Official Digital Download 24bit/96kHz]

Ethan Gruska – Slowmotionary (2017)
FLAC (tracks) 24 bit/96 kHz | Time – 30:23 minutes | 573 MB | Genre: Alternative
Studio Masters, Official Digital Download | Front Cover | © Sire

Ethan Gruska’s solo debut, the luminous Slowmotionary, embraces a range of sounds and styles, with influences from jazz and folk to ambient and alternative, Slowmotionary integrates everything into a whole that is original, idiosyncratic, and embraces its own imperfections. “I really tried to let that humanity in and to not only leave these quirky blemishes in, but to highlight them,” says Gruska. “I didn’t want perfect. I wanted true. I wanted honest.” He made room for a little serendipity in his creative process, sensing that too calculated an approach would diminish the impact of the music. That spontaneity provided a wonderful counterpoint to his thoughtful and revealing lyrics. Showcasing Gruska’s hushed vocals and subtle arrangements, these songs resonate with the intimacy of an internal monologue, as though we’re sharing in his darkest worries. “The goal was to have it be like a sound collage that I had made. It was really exploratory, with a lot of sampling and reversing-techniques I had tried in the past but had never gotten to fully explore.” The results are beautifully minimalist: songs as whispered confidences, with what Gruska calls an “arctic” sound, windswept and cold, befitting lyrics that depict moments frozen in time. “I didn’t want to hide behind anything. That’s why it’s produced and arranged the way it is. It’s very barren at certain moments. These songs slow down time for me, which is why I called it Slowmotionary. I needed to put myself out there musically and lyrically.” And that meant not making it perfect. It meant making these songs sound like the results from something other than a studio. It meant conveying the sense of music that is being written at the same moment you hear it. “A lot of the record is mysterious, even to me. It’s not something you always tap your foot to. You’re listening to my thought process.”

Los Angeles-based songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Ethan Gruska presents his long-awaited second solo album, en Garde. en Garde is the follow up to his acclaimed 2017 solo debut SLOWMOTIONARY, which led The Los Angeles Times to proclaim Gruska as “L.A.’s next great songwriter”. en Garde was recorded at Sound City Studios and co-produced by Tony Berg. Each of Gruska’s compositions tell a vivid story surrounded by deceptively complex yet unrelentingly melodic musical structures. While conventional instruments include guitars, bass, keyboards, drums, occasional brass and strings, the studio itself becomes an instrument to be manipulated, chopped, channeled and utilized to recombine aural textures into almost unrecognizable sounds that manage to soothe as they ebb/flow and invite movement like all classic pop rock.

In early 18th-century England, the recorder was a popular instrument among music lovers, therefore – since the eminent Italian composer Arcangelo Corelli’s works made an enormous impression in the country – it was only a matter of time before numerous virtuoso recorder arrangements of his string works began to appear. Estro Cromatico leader Marco Scorticati (recorder) and his longstanding partner Davide Pozzi (harpsichord and organ) join forces with Evangelina Mascardi (archlute), Sara Campobasso (recorder), Michela Gardini (cello) and Pietro Pasquini (organ), to deliver a new rendition of this well-loved music, including two premiere recordings. Improvised ornamentation, as well as the multifaceted texture provided by diversified combinations of the continuo instruments, play a central role in the present interpretation, thus bringing Corelli’s extraordinary music back to life; as Roger North wrote in 1710 «if music can be immortal, Corelli’s consorts will be so». Booklet notes include a short essay on Corelli and the recorder written by Dr. David Lasocki, recognized as one of the world’s leading scholars regarding woodwind instruments, particularly members of the flute family.

Spanish pop duo Estopa, formed by brothers José and David Muñoz, made an impressive debut with their self-titled album in 2001, released by BMG-Ariola. Playing a mixture of flamenco-pop and rhumba-rock, Estopa became a top-selling act in less than a year; they were voted Revelation of the Year and Best Spanish Band at the 2000 Amigo Awards. In 2001, they released Destrangis and in 2004 the smash hit ¿La Calle Es Tuya?, which followed a cameo appearance on Antonio Mercero’s film The 4th Floor. The duo’s subsequent albums of the 2000s (2005’s Voces de Ultrarumba, 2008’s Allenrok, and 2009’s X Anniversarivm) didn’t quite match the success or sales of their first record, but December 2011’s 2.0 saw a return to past glories ironically with an update and evolution of their rumba-rock sound. It hit number one, and remained on the charts for all of 2012. Esto Es Estopa, released in 2014 in audio and video packages, debuted at number one in Spain and spent several months within the Top Ten plus high chart appearances in Italy and Mexico. Not disappointing their fans in the slightest, the Muñoz brothers returned in 2015 with Rumba a lo Desconocido.

As Alfred Schnittke and Arvo Pärt both adopted the Orthodox faith in the 1970s, Orthodox choral traditions became increasingly prominent in their work, but both composers also looked to the music of the Western church. Schnittke’s Three Sacred Hymns set three prayers, familiar in the West as “Ave Maria”, the “Jesus Prayer” and the “Lord’s Prayer”, and evoke Orthodox chant. His Choir Concerto, on the other hand, draws on Russian choral music of the 19th century and the tradition of large-scale concert works based on Orthodox choral music. The texts by the medieval Armenian poet Gregory of Narek are informed by a humanistic individualism, with the poet directly expressing his emotions and often writing in the first person.
