February 2023 will finally see the release of their second long player. “Sitting Pretty” will be its name. The two singles “Pushing Up Daisies” and “Don’t Take It Personal” fuel the anticipation. Still in the release month, The Academic will then come across the channel to Berlin to present their new material live.

Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley met at the University of Colorado’s Philosophy Department in 2008. They eventually married and formed the band Tennis, now a staple of American indie music. For their sixth album, they’ve put their own spin on scientist Edward Lorenz’s famous proposition: ‘Could a butterfly flapping its wings in Brazil cause a tornado in Texas?’ With these ten songs, the duo seek to describe small things with big consequences, transforming the butterfly effect into the ‘pollen effect’. For example, in the track ‘Gibraltar’, they contrast the minuteness of the titular region (Gibraltar is a territory of just 7 km2) with the magnitude of the singer’s fragility, who’s ’faltering’ and ’can’t speak’. Such powerful imagery suggests that Tennis’ lyrics are better described as poetry than song. The ambitious lyrics almost seem to contrast with the music, which is much lighter and breezier, though still excellently produced. Whether it’s a tender retro ballad (‘Pillow for a Cloud’) or a danceable pop track (‘Paper, Let’s Make a Mistake Tonight’), Tennis produces music that tantalises with its subtle optimism. In fact, it feels like the soundtrack to a summer beach trip, and Alaina Moore’s crystal-clear vocals only contribute to this idyllic picture. Pollen is an album with a heavy message wrapped up in a light, breezy parcel. – Nicolas Magenham

Frontiers Music Srl is pleased to announce T3NORS, a very special new AOR project. Two of America’s greatest AOR singers, Robbie LaBlanc and Toby Hitchcock, join forces with one of Sweden’s finest AOR singers, Kent Hilli, to form the vocal trio. These absolutely outstanding vocalists have come together on one glorious album, “Naked Soul”, which will be released on February 10, 2023. The story behind this record actually dates back quite a few years as Frontiers has been wanting to do a ‘three tenors’ type of record for quite some time. Given the extremely high level of AOR vocal talent that the label has worked with in the past and continues to work with today, the idea never really lost steam. The issue was always finding the right pairing of three singers and the timing for the individual singers to have availability in their schedules to record. With the onset of the global pandemic in 2020, everyone’s availability, for better or for worse, became more flexible and the idea started to become reality. Pairing Robbie, Toby and Kent together seemed an ideal team up and all three were enthusiastic about the idea when approached to participate. The rest, as they say, is history.

AMBIENCE is Big Round Records latest release from composer Joe Hume. After a decade of working exclusively as a professional pianist, Hume has returned to composing in a big way with this compelling 11-track album of airy original solo piano pieces. The bright, spacious textures of café de Paristhe albums first tracksets the tone for what is to follow. Though brief, at less-than three minutes long, the piece breathes peacefully, with its unhurried motion punctuated by brief modulations. Next one hears Del Mar, a songful, poignant meditation. As the album continues, each piece sets a scene for the listenerThe Swan floats with agility between major and minor, while Northern Shore sings with a lilting cadence like waves lapping at a rocky shoreline. Adagio for Strings, previously released as a single in July 2019, is rich and expansive, harnessing the pianos warm lower-middle voice. Nocturne, as its name suggests, is tender and thoughtful, with long arpeggiated chords rolling seamlessly with the tune in the right hand. Winters Tale concludes the album, with melodic lines so cleanly crafted that ones mind can almost imagine words hidden in the piano music. Hume writes that he set out to create music that was melodic, calming, yet powerful in its delivery. The composer/pianist has no doubt succeeded in this endeavor. As its title suggests, AMBIENCE could simply be treated as lovely background noise but that doesnt mean it should be. After all, listeners who take a moment to close their eyes and listen deeply may find Humes piano is singing for them.

While possessing a stylistically distinct sound, Hisaishi’s music has been known to explore and incorporate different genres, including minimalist, experimental electronic, European classical, and Japanese classical. Lesser known are the other musical roles he plays; he is also a typesetter, author, arranger, and conductor.

He has been associated with animator Hayao Miyazaki since 1984, having composed scores for all but one of his films.
